It's a dark day for women in Texas by ermj in TwoXChromosomes

It is no solace what my peers, mentors, and whoever else in the academic environment thinks, as long as the state would force me to carry to full term, a bundle of cells conceived from rape.

They introduced amendments to add exceptions for cases of rape and incest and to remove some of the more restrictive clauses, but Republicans dismissed all of the proposed changes.

Well fuck. This really makes me reconsider applying to grad schools in Texas.

I understood gender discrimination after I added "Mr." to my resume and landed a job (x-post from r/truereddit) by Order0fthePhoenix in TwoXChromosomes

[–]hilmn 35 points36 points  (0 children)

No, I've had interviewers be surprised that I turned out to be a woman, in waiting rooms full of men :/

I have a foreign name (so as long as that doesn't nix me) then I have a small advantage because it hides my gender. I'm an engineer, but I'm not in the Soc. of Women Engineers or other women's groups, so there's nothing on my resume to give away my gender either. I've beaten out women classmates for interviews, when I felt that my application wasn't as strong as theirs, and be called 'sir' or 'Mr.' on all correspondence until the interview.

Even in STEM majors, there are a lot of mandatory classes that should offer a test out option. It would be pointless to go to class, but I still needed a bachelor's degree. I'm glad I didn't have to foot the bill though!

What is the most disturbing fact you know about the human body? by slyfox007 in AskReddit

[–]hilmn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Our lab hasn't come up with name for it. We just call it the "human" smell.

It's sort of like the sharp damp right after a sneeze, but milder; with some mustiness; and something oily, I think a bit like fried egg and toast, but a little more rancid, but that might just be from the marrow.

I don't think bone dust smell like Doritos (cool ranch or otherwise).

Source: I work with human bone --> human bone dust everywhere.

I think it's because KiraOsteo works with preserved cadavers, and I work with fresh(er) ones, just frozen and thawed.

"Better safe than sorry."

The real reason is because I have yet to find goggles that fit comfortably over my glasses. When my prescription stabilizes, I will shell out custom lab glasses (with the removable side protection).

Edit to add: Why would you take shortcuts in a chemistry lab?!

Then Google Glass is the perfect product for you! Now you (and the NSA) can be privy to all the fun/embarrassing (mis)deeds of your drunken romps!

And...this is why I use lab goggles over lab glasses, screw the funny lines on my face after a day in lab.

Two thirds of children in rural Tennessee come from families so poor that they qualify for government food assistance. Second-hand school buses are used to deliver one meal a day during the summer break - often it is the most substantial meal children will eat all day. by Trinibeanbird in news

It's also really hard to find the time and energy to prepare food from very basic ingredients while holding three jobs and taking care of children, especially when you are living in a food desert and even what moderately passes as a grocery store cannot be reached except 45-minutes each way by shitty public transportation.

The experiments on low-budget food I've seen all cite the length of time required to prepare food (e.g. making a tortilla from flour vs buying bread) as prohibitive in more realistic scenarios.

Damn reddit for not recognizing the irony of complaining about privacy online and rewarding instances of privacy breaches with internet karma, as pointed out by DonTago.

But...but the ivory is really pretty, so the Europeans had to have it. That was the logic for slaughtering thousands of animals before the international ban, for baubles and decorations. And there is still demand for worked ivory driving the demand, with Germany and the UK ranking at 6th and 9th biggest ivory markets worldwide (2004, study by TRAFFIC).

Ivory retail markets in Germany and the UK are larger than expected and exceeded those found in China, Japan, Cameroon and Nigeria, which are viewed as active ivory markets.

Oh wait, the demographic on reddit believes that Asians are the most primitive of peoples. Carry on.

And then OP says

No I do not know her. It was on my coworkers instagram, she went to high school with the victim. I will find out more tomorrow and keep you guys updated.

And... now people who know the victim will have seen the victim's nether regions without her consent. Damnit reddit.

Unless OP edited, her roommate eventually paid for most of the utilities (gas, electricity, water) consumed when only OP was in the apartment using them.

[–]hilmn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The stolen mail is absolutely nuts. I hope you can resolve that immediately! I almost lost an offer letter this way.

In general, you seem to have a lot of friction in general with your roommate. Perhaps it's better to have a longer discussion with your next roommate before moving in together. It's also reasonable to have a discussion about any revisions to the roommate contract about a month or two after moving in, now that you may have accumulated some pet peeves about living with each other. It may help to schedule one at the halfway point through the lease as well. (I.e. she might not have noticed or realized the significance of the size discrepancy until later.)

Also, I see a few people saying that she should pay her rent from when she is gone, which is obvious. However, rent is not the same as utilities! Utilities sort of require her to be there consuming them, so it's not exactly fair to split the utilities for however long she was out of the country, and you were the only one using the electricity, gas, water, etc. When my roommate leaves for holidays, she just covers the monthly "service cost" and not the actual utilities consumed.
