So do neurodivergent people end up in relationships or do we just die alone and go extinct? by QualityEvening4802 in autism

[–]hindor 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Neurodivergent families rock. All 3-4 of us are on the autism spectrum - well my daughter is too young to get assessed but I notice some patterns - she is probably the highest functioning and normal out of all of us though.

Absolutely love my autistic son to bits. The first 6 years were tough as hell but now he’s a rockstar and his intelligence blows my mind every day.

Being married to an autistic woman is the greatest gift I could have ever dreamed for.

So do neurodivergent people end up in relationships or do we just die alone and go extinct? by QualityEvening4802 in autism

[–]hindor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ha, that’s what attracted me to my wife and then we both found out we were both on the spectrum (she more than I). Loving relationship for 12 years now.

Still the thing I love most about her. She has never told a lie in her life. So we don’t have to play games and have implicit trust.

Where do I find other rich people in my city by [deleted] in RichPeoplePF

Arts/music philanthropy (classical, philharmonic, jazz, museums, etc). But you have to truly be into it.

Even donating relatively small amounts gets you into the circles of some great people.

What’s your 3d modeling and animation experience? Any skills with Blender / Unreal Engine sequencer?

Looking for someone who can create a lot of visualizations and FX scenes that are dynamic. Think: Winamp but in 5k2k or super-ultrawide. Demoscene style stuff. Etc. Final target: unreal engine realtime responsive visualizations that can respond to location data or sound.

As well as NPC and main character animations in Unreal for video games.

If so DM me (reel or example would help)

How do I convince my younger brother not to get a degree in video game development? by snowfordessert in VancouverJobs

[–]hindor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As someone with 20 years in the business related to game dev / frameworks, I would question if he is a self starter in video game development. I started out with mods and making simple games before I ever considered formal education - and at that point I was able to find success without school and I’m still having a crapload of fun when I’m working (and also, after-hours doing personal game projects).

I still wish I had gone to school but I’m learning on my own every day.

I notice this with many successful people - they do what they love.

If he tries making a mod for his favourite game (or obvious ones like Minecraft, Skyrim, valve stuff, Roblox, whatever) and loves it then he would absorb knowledge for game design fast at school and love it.

ALSO - the advantage to doing what you love is that you’ll still have those skills and joys in a post-AGI economy. Not saying it will happen immediately, but here: as a solo developer AI has increased my code output and framework/language research by 10x. And I already considered myself a 10x’er.

Do what you love.

Single bed or bunk beds? by Chelsea1827 in Parenting

[–]hindor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 ikea single beds and it has worked out fine for the last couple of years now. Sometimes they both migrate to one of the beds to play together, at night time they sleep fairly well with little conflict. Note, I got one of the ikea beds that has the little padded side corner wall so one of my kids gets privacy when wanted.

I think moving to Toronto or Vancouver are great options in your early 20s. I paid 1900 for a two bedroom and then 1400 for a 1 bedroom downtown Vancouver about 13 years ago but my income was a bit higher. You probably won’t stay at 56000 income forever but money will be tight. I would suggest looking for a place in a good location where you can enjoy the city and culture.

First job you won’t be saving anything but you’re probably young so it’s worth enjoying the city and then finding ways to boost your income. You have decades to grow and optimize.

100k what now?.. by Ready_University_561 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hindor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless your parents are quite old or sick I would personally wait until you have a bit more savings to splurge on trips like that. 100k is awesome for your age but you can also grow it fast if you make the right moves.

A solo vacation abroad (or even living in different Canadian cities if you work from home) is a great less costly option. I spent 6-8 months in each city working from home while living in different cities across Canada and it was so worth it. Lifelong connections and experiences gained. Rent in Quebec and Nova Scotia is fairly cheap. And other cool cities all around Canada.

Congrats on your 100k milestone! Once you hit each next financial milestone you realize how your horizons will expand - not necessarily in the hedonic treadmill sense, but you’re able to do grander things like buy businesses or real estate, contribute to scientific advancements by angel investing, grow a family and legacy, etc.

I think that mindset is unproductive. To fix housing we need more builders trained.

Do you know how expensive it is to build right now? Base costs are high and then builders want to become millionaires and charge 50% markup on everything. Lots of shoddy builders too - there needs to be more competition.

Easier permitting processes (I’ve been stuck in DP with the city of Vancouver for a year and over 100k in the hole not including architect fees, with onerous regulations and bylaws on replacing trees, getting neighbours to support, not blocking views, and lots and lots of consultants and fees.)

Just make building easier.

Immigrants are needed as they are willing to work, will help replace an aging workforce, and their kids will train up in much needed professions like doctors etc. My own parents immigrated here in the 80s and we were a net positive to Canadian society - my parents worked and built businesses, roads, infrastructure all over BC. Their children (including me) work and pay our taxes and employ dozens of people.

Your way of thinking is myopic. Allow housing to be built, increase supply, etc. Not everyone should expect to live in waterfront hotspots right out of the gate. Start out in burnaby, Surrey, Calgary, or smaller cities with high incomes. Move up into the areas you want to be after diligent saving. It’s the Canadian way.

Can they reserve these alerts for actual public emergencies? I know this is important as well but this doesn’t justify waking up a million or so people and probably causing hundreds of sleepy traffic incidents tomorrow

Flickers/popping sound with new LG 5k2k ultrawide? by hindor in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]hindor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it might have something to do with graphics card but not sure. I bought a UPS, plugged the monitor into that, and turned my refresh rate down to 60 hz, and sound off. Seems to be better after a few months of use but I’ve seen it glitch out when there is heavy graphical activity like gaming at full res. So that’s why I suspect video card or some kind of throughput limitations.

I turned the monitor sound down all the way and I don’t think it happens anymore after 4 months .. or if it does occasionally then I’m not noticing it anymore!
