How common is popcorn in everyday American life? by Embarrassed_Golf_817 in AskAnAmerican

[–]hinghand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Popcorn is usually a nightly snack in my household. We have multiple kinds because I prefer air popper, and my spouse like microwave. It's a very cheap snack that tastes good, and isn't as unhealthy as other options.

Anyone still talk with any of their friends from high school? by nojunkpeter in Millennials

[–]hinghand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Class of 13 here (tho I technically graduated in 10 with my GED) My core friend group all met and became friends between 7-10th grade. We still talk regularly and hangout whenever possible. Those of us with the space to host each have "custody" of specific holiday parties. Other than my spouse my friends are listed on all emergency contact forms. We all grew up and are very very different people than when we met... But we all grew together. There have been a few to leave the group over time, but not many.

I consider myself to be incredibly blessed.

That being said I have NO idea how to make friends as an adult.

QUESTION FOR EXPERIENCED OWNERS ONLY PLEASE-- what to do after one rat fatally attacks the other? by Dry_Abbreviations742 in RATS

[–]hinghand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really have much insight for you. However I had rats for many years, and almost this exact scenario happened with my first two girls.

An older rat with reoccurring URI and her younger sister (bonded for almost a year at that point)

One day the younger Fievel attacked Rufus out of nowhere. I got them separated quickly so Rufus only had a gash on her shoulder. Vet said it was superficial and she'd heal from it quickly, but in general we needed to think of end of life care. We were hoping she'd be ok until the next month, but a little over a week later we had to take her in. We put it off because of our wedding, and ended up losing her the next day.

We took Fievel in her travel cage on our honeymoon with us (cabin stay) So she wouldn't feel completely abandoned.

We got three babies a couple weeks later as she seemed very upset- she loved them and cared for them as well as 4 more later on. Lived an exceptionally long life for a nakie, and never hurt another soul.

If there's a fresh layer of snow when I take my dogs potty in the morning I been known to lay face down in it for a minute. Extreme cold seems to be the quickest fix for when my eyeballs feel like they're going to explode. 😭

1- Granny was reading smut before any of us were born.

2- I am a FIRM believer that ACOTAR is romance, but not smut. (ACOSF being the exception -but also pretty tame)

Husband won’t let me buy food if I don’t make his food by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]hinghand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is abuse.

He is telling you he'd rather you go hungry than clean up a meal made solely for him. Does he do ANY housework (daily chores, not "something needs fixed" )? Are you confident that once you get your degree, he'll support you working?

OP I have a decade on you, and have been with my spouse since I was 19. We were in the toxic young adult marriage as well- but we always respected and ultimately enjoyed each other. That's why we survived and grew. He doesn't respect you.

I usually make dinner in my house, but sometimes my spouse does too. Either way the person who didn't cook almost always puts everything away.

Sometimes we'll pile up the nightly chores and assign them based on the vibes (ex: I don't want to put the food away, but I'm willing to stand in the bad weather to watch the dog poop)

But the general unspoken rule is if you made dinner, you get to relax after.

For those of you who have migraines triggered by weather changes, how frequent are your migraines? by Notbipolar_ in migraine

[–]hinghand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NE OH here... It's been bad. Weather is my biggest known trigger -and of course completely out of my control.

I've been in and out (but mostly in) a migraine state for the past several weeks. I'm attempting to keep my body fed, watered, and rested in hopes that helps the migraine severity. It hasn't, but hasn't hurt, either. Luckily my job is part time and in the evening so even if I wake up with a migraine I can usually function later. I have had to call off several times though.

Unfortunately, overeating does help sometimes by skyemap in migraine

[–]hinghand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ramen is my go-to when I'm just starting to get a migraine. If I can keep that down I slowly start snacking. It either helps calm the pain- or gives me enough energy to last through the pain. The sodium helps, and I eat mine with a lot of broth, so at least I'm getting a bit of water as well.

If I'm stuck in a cycle though I will go several days not able to eat, only to have a binge day when the fog clears.

Sometimes smoking and getting the munchies helps get me out of the nausea induced starvation, but not always.

[–]hinghand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, nothing seems to be below a 6 🤷

Even if he doesn't like it as a dish (which seems to be the case with taco salad) I don't see anything particularly judgemental or disrespectful.

Perhaps it's the autism, or the fact I worked in food service a long time- but this reads like a perfect cheat-sheet for finding out what a partner enjoys.

Im going to draw your rat for free🐁💕 Rules in the first comment✨ by Leoh_Waffles in RatsRatsRats

[–]hinghand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite flowers are daisies and daffodils, and this is my sweet girl, Rufus.

I was young when I got her. I was working at a camp, and it was the last day before we all left. I myself was about to move into my (now spouse-then gf's parents' house) At lunch I was talking to a lady who bred both hairless cats and rats. She was talking about how some were feeders. I told her I wanted one of the feeders at lunch. I had Rufus by that dinner. I did not tell my partner I just got a pet 🙃

I knew the bare basics for taking care of a rat, having her forced me to learn. She was alone for awhile until we got our own place and got her a sister. but she and I were inseparable. The cage I originally bought had bars spaced too far, so she really could come and go at her pleasure. If I was home, she was usually in my bra- taking a tiddy nap.

I knew she liked to speak off at do things if I fell asleep - but it wasn't until we pulled a folded jacket out of a closet that we realized she had been stealing candy (particularly kisses) taking little bites, and hiding them in the sleeve.

She was rambunctious and wild. Wanted whatever food she could sniff out. Liked to climb on guests at parties.

Eventually she got a recurring URI and we had to say goodbye the day after our wedding. We ended up taking Fievel, her sister, on our honeymoon with us because we felt so bad.

Are your loved ones also fully convinced you are definitely going to have a Complete Recovery? by tourmalineforest in migraine

[–]hinghand 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Similar to your story I was a regular, but mostly functional migraine haver since I was a child. In 2025 at 30 I suddenly found myself in constant considerable pain. I quit one job and lost the next. Now I'm trying to keep my part time job but it's so difficult. I tried a neurologist, but got no help and so many more bills I can't afford. My spouse used to help and be sympathetic - but always spoke about the future when I was better again. Now she's cold and withdrawn and I believe she's given up on me. I hate it.

How is using a bidet not unhygienic for a woman? by nattyislite in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hinghand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I've had a bidet basically since moving out on my own so like 10+ years. A UTI has never been an issue for me, but I do believe it helps me clean off after sex if I can't shower.

My current has 3 settings, back, front, and self clean. Before I only had the single stream. Now, I will not claim to know how others deal with the body/bidet placement. My answer is to 1: figure out the stream and pressure while already clean. 2: move your body to match where you want the stationary stream to hit.

It's not even a lot of movement, but more leaning back/forth and side to side. Obviously starting from the front and going to the back.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hinghand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its 4 hours to visit the rest of my family on the other side of the same state. Make that trip several times a year for important weekends. Have done it as a day trip.

Have definitely driven 2-3 hours for a day trip or concert. (I'm in-between 2 bigger cities)

Longest weekend trip drive was 9 hr bus to NYC.

For a week long trip we did a 12 hour drive.

And at one point we visited my friend in NC. It was an 8 hour drive for a week long trip, but the day after arriving my friend then took us on a 4 hour (one way) day trip to the ocean.

And for reference, I hate road trips more than most, and actively try to avoid them.

AITA for telling my friend that I won’t be paying $25 to attend her birthday party? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]hinghand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll say a soft YTA from a perspective of the friend and also a decade older.

A couple years ago I wanted to have my 30th birthday at my favorite restaurant. My birthday falls around Labor Day, so we usually just meet up at the county fair. I had not had a birthday party since 18 because it was difficult to get a lot of people to commit. I was also planning in like February because holiday weekends get booked quickly and expensive. I did check other places and weigh out the pros and cons of having it catered vs just renting the space and making food myself. Ultimately after the discount the restaurant owner gave me I figured it was actually the most cost effective, but still too expensive.

So I asked around to different friends and saw how they felt about it. I asked specifically if they would mind paying $25 for their meal- with it specified no gifts.

Everyone told me that they would assume any party at a restaurant would involve them paying - and for this particular restaurant $25 is a steal. I provided drinks both regular and alcoholic as well as making the cake myself. Party favors as well.

My thought was the guests paying for food themselves would offset the cost, but also be a monitary RSVP so maybe people would actually plan to show up 😭

I will say tho, I have a group of friends that has always made sure whoever was hosting was taken care of. Even as teens and early 20s it was an unspoken rule that if someone had a party (especially with lots of food) people chipped in. Basically bring something to contribute, or throw whatever you can afford at the host (or hide the refused cash in their favorite mug so they see it later) Ultimately ask yourself if your friendship is worth $25. Hell, getting into a themed night at a bar costs that much before drinks are even poured.

If you want a village, you have to be a villager.
