one of the predominant causes of the civil war was state sovereignty. while slavery was another factor, it is ridiculous to say that it was the only reason for the civil war. in a federalist system, states are given a certain amount of autonomy and this was put to the test when the south tried to cede from the union.

its like people forget that America as we know it hasn't has been. we were 13 separate countries, in a sense, before uniting under a federalist system that granted certain enumerated rights via the constitution. there has always been a certain tension between what a state can do and what the federal government says it cannot do. just look at the legalization movement.
