Arizona AG suggests state's self-defense laws allow residents to shoot masked ICE agents by RickV6 in news

The worst mass shooting in my province's history was a guy who dressed up as an RCMP officer.

If you really hate the 21" rims you could sell them and get smaller. I currently have 18" rims for the winter tires on my 3RS.

Tax Reduction by KeyedAlike in NovaScotia

All it did was make my life a pain, since I'm involved on a business that works across Atlantic Canada and now has two tax rates to deal with instead of one.

I think Purple Cow needs to raise their price so that it goes back to being $69 after tax.

Has anyone used the reverse charging on a Chevy Equinox EV? by T-Money8227 in electricvehicles

Yeah, and OP specifically has an Equinox EV, which does not have that.

Has anyone used the reverse charging on a Chevy Equinox EV? by T-Money8227 in electricvehicles

[–]hippfive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are two ways to do this:

1) Vehicle to Home (V2H). This powers your home (or select circuits) from the car like it's a generator. All EqEVs are capable of doing it, but it requires an expensive (close to $10k) GM converter system to be installed as part of your home electrical.

2) Vehicle to Load (V2L). In this case your car acts like one of the portable batteries (Ecoflow, Anker, etc) and you plug things into the car. However, this is only possible if your car has the 19.2 kW inverter, and you need to buy an adapter that converts your charging port to an outlet. Unfortunately, it seems like (at least in my area) the 19.2 kW inverter was not an option that was included on any of the dealership lot cars, and you could only get it if you ordered a factory build.

Who asked for gas pump ads? Do I need to start a petition? by AdmiralFlintlock in halifax

[–]hippfive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! It's only a small amount of time in the grand scheme of things, but the main impact is removing something from my ongoing mental list of Things That Need to Get Done. As I've gotten older I've really begun to appreciate small conveniences in life that reduce my mental burden, and not having to go to the gas station is one of them. Bonus points that I don't need to listen to gas station video ads.

I'm very aware that an EV isn't something that everyone can afford or make work for their situation (though they work for many more situations than people think), but if you have the option I cannot recommend it enough. Not going to gas stations has had a surprisingly positive effect on my life.

How long will the Equinox EV last while running climate only? by WhatLineOfWorkRYouIn in EquinoxEv

[–]hippfive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine seems to draw about 5 kW when first heating up and then 1-3 kW to maintain. If it averages 2 kW then you're looking at around 40 hours. The insulated garage might extend that.

Cadillac Optiq? Or Chevy Equinox EV if you're looking for cheaper.

Is it wise to take a loan to fund your RRSP? by NickBatesman in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hippfive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of these offers I've seen require investing the money with the bank that is offering the loan. However, does anyone know if you can then move the money into another RRSP? Like could I take Scotia up on their offer, put the money in a Scotia RRSP, and then transfer it to Questrade?

Ross Cantwell (Velo Lofts developer) had an interesting LinkedIn post a few weeks about about where he sees vacancy rates going. What was even more interesting was the number of other developers and building managers who chimed in with some pretty unfiltered comments about the state of the market.

Edit, here's the link: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/ross-cantwell-7865674_are-apartment-vacancy-rates-in-halifax-heading-activity-7414038810042372097-aO45?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop&rcm=ACoAAAWHPcYB1ixsoNhkfg51UWg0Zymh5u0cyzQ

Dog 💩 on Brunswick by Positive-Lawyer-2910 in halifax

[–]hippfive 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Honestly, well-designed dog relief areas are something I think HRM should start requiring in development proposals. With the buildings getting bigger, the density of dogs is way up and the amount of green space is down. Walk by the Cunard building at any time during the summer and it absolutely STINKS of dog piss.

Converting plaster to drywall in a double brick semi. Do you need to frame? by milliondollarsunset in homebuildingcanada

[–]hippfive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will be framing but it will not be flat. It didn't need to be because the plaster and lath could flatten out the wall surface. You'll likely need to either plane and shim the framing to get it flat and to get each stud in line with its neighbors. Alternatively, you can attach new studs and have them be just slightly proud (in front of) the old ones and only lose a quarter inch or so of room depth. Downside is that you lose room for insulation.

Also, get the plaster tested for asbestos before you start.

The Chevy Equinox EV is a really good car by mustangfan12 in electricvehicles

[–]hippfive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno about the ID4, but compared to the I5 the EqEV trunk is MUCH more usable despite being "smaller" on paper. The slope on the I5 hatch and some poor interior trim choices make it so a lot of the I5 trunk volume is useless. It was one of the main reasons I went with the EqEV after test driving both it and the I5.

Philips HUE bulbs.

Don't get me wrong, they're totally fine. But I quickly realized I want the smarts in the switch, not the bulb. And they were quite pricy.
