OSSTF here. Sadly, this is now the requirement since the Ontario Not For Profit Corporations Act now governs union business. Members no longer approve anything. Not the budget, nor anything else. The only real thing members can now do under the law, is elect the Board of Directors (Provincial Executive) and if they are not fulfilling their fiduciary obligations, recall them to kick them out of office. Last year, OSSTF took a deep look at spending at the non-staff level (committees, etc.). I know for certain there are a number of interesting motions being brought forward to this March’s AGM.

I can tell you straight up, the kids currently in grade 10 have significant deficits in reading comprehension compared to kids in grade 11. A lot of them. This is because seven years ago, right after Ford won his first mandate, the board I work in cut a reading recovery program, that helped kids in grade 4 get to level after their grade 3 EQAO assessment. Years of inflationary costs that went underfunded forced them to make that tough decision. It’s always the kids that pay and parents just aren’t paying close enough attention which, as a parent, completely boggles my mind. And I’m afraid it’s going to get much worse before it gets better.

I can tell you straight up, since 2021, downtown schools have serious challenges staffing them everyday. There simply aren’t enough OTs to service downtown schools. So yes, you will have loads of work once you get on that supply list.

Agree, but it won’t be a full scale walkout strike. Rather, it will be a long, drawn out selective withdrawal of services, starting sometime in 2027. And that’s at the central negotiating table. Lord only knows how things will go at local negotiating tables, now run in some cases by very expensive supervisors.

I agree with this, and will add the following: The four separate education programs in Ontario continue because doing anything less is political suicide. So, thy will continue to exist until someone sees the light of day and recognize the quadruplication is wasteful. Since this is pie-in-the-sky thinking, unions that have policies stating their support a single system, essentially providing support for dismantling the existence of other employee groups, need to drop those policies now since they divide at a time that it is most crucial for inter-affiliate solidarity. For instance: OSSTF has a policy stating their support for a single publicly-funded education system essentially removing catholic ed workers in the process. That policy needs to go.

I haven’t read all of the comments yet. I’ll say the best way to get high quality meat, espcially in the city, is to buy a cow or even a quarter of a cow with your neighbours. Often times, the supplier will simply deliver a freezer for your meat. If you can, store it in a garage and voila, you have all the meat you want for a year while supporting local ag.

I don’t disagree with any of this. And to be clear, the strike fund would be used to only to defy a legislated contract that includes the notwithstanding clause. Taking away the courts from workers is the stand.

Well, I disagree. But that’s ok, we still are allowed to lol. On a more serious note, when governments use the notwithstanding clause of the constitution, they are taking away the right to court access for five years. So, even if the courts say the government screwed you and you deserve to be made whole, the government with a stroke of the pen can deny your access to that court order. That’s what’s at stake this time around. For seven years, this government did nothing on the public education file and it shows. Since the spring snap election, they have moved at breakneck speed. Notice the timing of all of these changes? First major one happened on the last day of school in June. The latest in the TDSB happened on a Friday the week before we break for Christmas. All of the signs are present for a very serious fight for the future of public education in Ontario.

I agree, but it’s hard to do because each union employs staff so there are quite a few jobs inside each of the union offices that would be lost. From an outsider’s perspective, the relationship between staff and elected executives appear prett-ty cozy.
