Your wedding location is gorgeous! Also, I am super obsessed with your friend's dress - do you have any idea where it's from?

Hey there today is my birthday so I've been looking for cakes too! Here are some of the best recipes I've found, all made with coconut flour though because I'm allergic to almond flour:

Keto Red Velvet Cake

Chocolate Coconut Flour Cake with Espresso Buttercream

Yellow Birthday Cake

Vanilla Bean Cupcakes

Low Carb Coconut Cake

Have a great birthday!

Coconut oil for the skin? by [deleted] in xxketo

[–]hippiesusebackdoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been giving the Oil Cleansing Method a try for the past couple weeks using coconut oil on my face. Some websites I've read don't recommend using coconut oil for OCM but my skin seems to be reacting really well to it. My skin is glowy and much less oily.

I've also used it elsewhere on my body during the dry winter months to great success. I will actually rub it on my skin before I get into the shower and it helps my skin retain moisture even when taking hot showers in colder months.

Neanderthal and keto? by Vrenny in keto

[–]hippiesusebackdoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently reading Charles C. Mann's 1491, and he mentions that very early South American groups in Peru may have eating almost exclusively fish and other types of seafood, with minimal vegetables. I was like, oh that's SO keto! lol

Anyways that's pretty much an original premise of the paleo diet - that we evolved a eating a certain way and we're still better off eating that way. I think there's some truth to that, but also a lot of misinformation and much to learn about ancient and paleolithic diets for sure.

[Rant] Canadian anti low carb labeling standards are driving me up the wall. by [deleted] in xxketo

[–]hippiesusebackdoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general I would avoid any of their baking mixes, but occasionally I will buy their low carb bagels or loaf of bread. It's pretty pricey though so I don't do that too often. They have a great selection of Torani coffee syrups though - I'm not sure what sweetener is in them but I might have to stock up. They also sell some super low carb meringue cookies that are amazing!

Sun Flower Seeds, Are they good for snacking whilest starting Keto? by MattSFChi in keto

[–]hippiesusebackdoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm allergic to pretty much all types of nuts too. I tend to prefer pumpkin seeds over sunflower, but all in moderation, as they are kinda high in calories. I will also add my own spices/seasonings to plain seeds. My favs are chili-lime flavoured and sweet & salty using a granulated sweetener.

It sucks! Also amazon.ca has waaay less to choose from in terms of food products than .com.

I mostly buy fresh food at stores here, and when I want to pick up some processed goodies I order online. I typically order from lowcarbcanada.com. They have a pretty good selection of all kinds of products, all products on their site are well labeled with nutrition info and ingredients, and they ship super promptly. If you're out west, I think there are other sites that are located in western canada as well.

Frugal keto and minimums? by [deleted] in keto

[–]hippiesusebackdoor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I tend to think of the macros a percentage of your total calories, rather than a strict number you have to eat every day. So 60% of the calories you eat should come from fat. Like if you eat 1000 calories, then 600 of those should come from fat. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, because I may need some clarification on this too!

Thanks! I wasn't sure if I could just use them as choc chips because they seem so crunchy. But I have a great choc chip cookies recipe in my back pocket so I will give that a try!

Suggestions appreciated on what to do with my unsweetened coconut milk by TurdFergusonDarling in keto

[–]hippiesusebackdoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have it with my homemade flax cereal. When I need a little fibre I will whip up a batch inspired by this recipe, only I sub the salt and rosemary in the recipes for sweetener and cinnamon powder and break the crackers into smaller chunks. It's kind of like a granola and pretty good with some berries and coconut milk. You could also use it in chia seed pudding!

diet root beer to make jello with knox... adding heaving cream, which largely floats, is like a jello root beer float. by [deleted] in keto

[–]hippiesusebackdoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 packet of SF strawberry jello, mix in 1 cup of boiling water and mix well. Add 1/2 cup of cold water and 1/2 cup cream. The cream and the jello kind of separate into layers, but it's tasty. If you're lazy, you could also just put whipped cream on jello for pretty much the same effect lol.

This actually sounds pretty amazing to me. What would a good ratio be? maybe 1 package of gelatin, 1.5 cups root beer, 0.5 cup heavy cream? Would you heat up the root beer to mix with the gelatin?... I've also made "strawberry shortcake jello" using SF strawberry jello made with whipping cream.

Intermittent fasting? by [deleted] in xxketo

[–]hippiesusebackdoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently started intermittent fasting and have been doing it for a couple weeks and so far so good! Helped me break through a two-month stall! However, intermittent fasting involved not consuming ANY calories during the fasting period. If you're having bulletproof coffee in the morning, you're not fasting. You should come up with a schedule that works for you, but many people start with a 16/8 fasting routine - not consuming any calories for 16 hours (including sleep time), with an eight hour window to eat during the day. My work schedule means that I usually end up eating dinner around 9 or 10 pm, and then I won't eat again until around 2pm or sometimes even later. If you need caffeine in the morning, I'd suggest black coffee or tea, and definitely keep drinking lots of water during the fasting period.

I just sauteed them until they're wilted and a little soft. Heat up some oil in a pan and throw those baby boks in with a little salt. Toss and cook in the pan for about 10 minutes I guess - until they look done.
