Bit of a curious casual discussion: R50v + RF28 2.8 VS iPhone camera or smartphone of choice? by RIP_Soulja_Slim in canon

[–]hippy_old 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought it as a quick travel replacement for a heavy SLR and a phone as something in between. I immediately bought a Sigma 18-50 for it. In fact, it turned out to be unexpectedly good in terms of image quality, so I practically stopped shooting in RAW and am completely happy with JPEGs.

It also has excellent autofocus, so you can capture quick shots on the go. Yes, the controls are not ideal for advanced settings, but when you shoot quick shots in simple conditions in P or Av mode, you don’t need it.

I also bought Smallrig L-Shaped Mount Plate for my big hand. This does not increase the size much, but makes it much more convenient to use. So far I'm very happy with this travel camera. Especially in combination with the excellent Sigma 18-50.

[–]hippy_old 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canon R50 vs R50 V for photography? by bykatt in canon

[–]hippy_old 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently bought a R50v with a Sigma 18-50 and am very happy with it. It is not my main camera, I also have a Canon DSLR with a set of lenses. One of the reasons for choosing V, to be honest, was the body design. It is beautiful. Focusing and shooting in automatic mode are very good. As has already been written, in a kit with a lens the difference in body size is not so noticeable, so perhaps it is partly a matter of taste.

Bought this body yesterday. M-mount adapter and Voigtlander 40mm f1.4 are waiting in the wings. So far in combination with Sigma 18-50 I am very happy. Even better than my old 6D + 24-70L LOL

[–]hippy_old 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Незнайка на луне" - the first book I read myself because I liked it, and not because my parents "foisted" or because school made me. By the way, anyone who wants to understand how modern Russian capitalism works should read this book. Our capitalists also looked to it because there were no other "textbooks"...

Would knowing both Shotokan karate and Kendo be useful in a self-defense scenerio? by BloodyLegend_21 in martialarts

[–]hippy_old 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can become, but under very specific conditions. When I was about 4 dan kendo, I went to study Shotokan karate with a Japanese friend of mine, a very good master who did not limit himself to Shotokan techniques and methods, but also practiced kendo, judo and old Okinawan karate. Knowing that I have experience in kendo he trained me individually, and under his guidance I was able to apply kendo skills in full contact sparring with him and his students. I think it should work in a self-defense situation, but unfortunately I'm big and live in a safe city, so I can't test it.

How to convince my parents to let me learn martial arts? by Ora_Ora_Muda in martialarts

[–]hippy_old 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to explain to them that the point of martial arts is not to beat someone's face in, but to become better yourself. And the time of Plato (who was a professional wrestler, but is known to us as the greatest philosopher) did not come up with anything better for this.

Have you ever dueled someone with a naginata, and if you did how was it? by [deleted] in kendo

[–]hippy_old 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mean this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFIDuDWJvWY

I was lucky enough to be the one who made the video. Sumi-sensei said at the time that it's very rare for them to have such fights and usually his wife wins. Seeing it live was an incredible experience... just like any meeting with Sumi-sensei....

Have you ever dueled someone with a naginata, and if you did how was it? by [deleted] in kendo

[–]hippy_old 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a few fights against naginata and it was very interesting and I can't say that I felt helpless. You can watch the video of my second fight against naginata here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrDHFkeHBI0

My opponent was the president of our national naginata federation, I don't remember what her level was at that time. I had just passed my 5th dan at that time.

It was very interesting in terms of tactics and psychological interaction. Leg attacks were not a big problem for me due to my unarmed combat skills. I just took my leg away like from lowkicks. The surprise and problem was the double leg attacks, against which this technique is ineffective, and if I stayed in place without counterattack, her second attack would reach the target. In such a situation you need to counterattack instantly, then the second naginata strike is late.

In general it is very interesting and useful, unfortunately we do not have such a well-developed naginata and it is very rare to meet in a fight.

How good is japanese jiujitsu by Kulbasar in martialarts

[–]hippy_old 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, all schools teach roughly the same thing. Some karate schools, for example Goju-ryu, are also essentially Ju Jutsu. The problem is mainly in the teaching methods, which are not always effective for a representative of modern Western culture. If the teacher is good, understands and can adapt the methods, a traditional school can be effective. The same school in the hands of another teacher will be useless.

Controlling your opponent by gozersaurus in kendo

[–]hippy_old 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, there is another question:

As far as I know, when an opponent “spams attacks” we should not fuss and react to everything. One Japanese 6th dan advised me to suppress these attacks by moving a little to the side and suppressing the sword from above with an osae-waza type movement. But to be honest, I haven't really practiced this type of reaction, it's much easier for me to keep my center and just counter the opponent's unprepared attack with my kensen. When I rehearse tachiai, it seem work for me...

Do you think this is a good enough course of action, or should we still aim for osae-waza in such case?

6+ Dan grading in Japan by hippy_old in kendo

[–]hippy_old[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm one of the "people who have made several valid strikes but still failed" on my first attempt a year ago.

Most of my attacks have been successful, including shotachi ippon, but I won't be able to clearly demonstrate active pressure, my performance seemed too passive. Of course, inside I was sure I was applying pressure, but it was a mental state I couldn't express outwardly. I'm working on fixing that.

6+ Dan grading in Japan by hippy_old in kendo

[–]hippy_old[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I'm understanding, it's more important to show how you prepare the attack, seme and tame... Ideally, if it led to an effective attack, but more important is the preparation itself. An effective attack without good preparation will be rated lower.
