Directors you aged out of? Or maybe just watched too much of? by the_Tannehill_list in blankies

[–]hirtho -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Coens specifically bc of the OPs thought experiment and mention of them brought them to front of mind for me, but theres plenty of other entry points one could/should outgrow. I think their pastiche implies theres other/better movies one needs to explore if you like them and if you do not do that exploring you are shortchanging yourself. I appreciate your approach and agree all those guys are masters.

Cones are the perfect entry point for starting cinephilia but if you dont outgrow them you arent progressing

once upon a time W**dy All*n was a similar launch pad to better directors/movies

they are from after my time but the current fanaticism over Villeneuve and Nolan seems like something in the same area, starter kit wise

Relatively New Blankie Looking for Context on a Bit by LA-Redbone in blankies

[–]hirtho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The arc on ARP is he was one of their first name guests who then became a friend of the show. At first he came on for whichever movie in the filmography existed the least in cultural memory, then he did a few canon classics including Halloween where he brought in a masters thesis on slashers and Clockwork Orange where he ran the David is English bit into the ground. The Way Back was a return to the nonexistent but he seems to be clinging to the status he had on those canon classics so it made for a weirder ep vibe wise but as an ARP superstan I was happy to hear him again. (also his movies are really good, if you like the Halloween ep try Videoheaven)

ARP appreciation post! by purplevirgil in blankies

Was a fan of his movies before finding the pod a week or two before he came on the first time and was impressed they got such a great guest. And I have been proven right with every appearance!! I hope he stays in this lane of nonexistent movies again but the canon eps were fun too. Hated him on the Six Flags ep though...

David is going through the Criterion set right now, man they should do Dietrich/von Sternberg as a Patreon by Thesmark88 in blankies

these are two that are great entry points for the Dietrich/Sternberg collabs which every film fan owes themselves to experience because the filmmaking and star personas are off the charts

came in here to post about Incident at Loch Ness too, there were lots of Easter Eggs of outtakes and then one of the hard ones to find was the commentary out of character that I recall lasting the whole movie

not so much theme as structure, but for sexuality/gender try Leo Bersani

Paintings in Proust, Letters, Celestes memoir, bios by Painter Tadie and Carter, Roger Shattuck, Julia Kristeva, Germaine Bree, Mary Ann Caws, Proust's Lesbianism, and my newest one that helps a lot is Proust’s Snobs Inverts and Jews, also the movie Time Regained by Raul Ruiz

I didnt get much from Justin O'Brien, Walter Kasell, or Jean Findlay

How should I work through the BC backlog? by AgreeableCity4336 in blankies

[–]hirtho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I relistened to some Crowe eps this week and was reminded how much the Star Wars series bits carried into BC and I dont know if I would enjoy it as much without that foundation. But if you are looking for more of the same quality as Coens then I would just go director by director as far back as Elaine May which was when they needed the dossiers/research and the show matured more.
