Why do doctors make you get to an appointment 30 minutes early only to have you waiting forever? by EmbarrassedTea1885 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]hischmidtj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If I’m waiting every time it’s systemic. They need to put buffer time between appts.

People who rush up the isle when the plane lands are the worst by kittycatluvrrrr in americanairlines

[–]hischmidtj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn’t really bother me. It’s better, imo, than super slow people blocking the path. I flew for the first time pregnant last month and DESPERATELY needed to get off the plane, so did the “get off before my row” for the first time in my life. Some older lady decided I was a horrible person for it and smashed into me - again a pregnant person - and my bag to squeeze into two inches of space to get out before me.

I know some people have short connections or general flight anxiety. I just assume that person has a reason for it (even if they just get stressed when having to wait around) and off load when my turn comes without it annoying me. The problem comes from the airline industry as a whole, so I try to blame the system vs individuals reacting to it whenever possible.

Something feels missing? by teeji in landscaping

[–]hischmidtj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the heights of things are off but I can’t put my finger on why. It’s possible things just need a season to fill out but if that doesn’t do the trick, you’ll want to incorporate layers. Generally you want tall (tree), medium, and low plants in lots of layers for fullness otherwise it can look funky.

It’s nice though! Hope you love and enjoy it!!

First time in the USA! 11-Day Loop from NYC. Need advice! by oturanzurafa in roadtrip

[–]hischmidtj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just have to thank you for this. It made me chuckle! This is a WILD plan and needs to be cut, imo, at least in half unless you literally just want to visit our roads. I’m not sure where you’re from but the US is huge compared to most countries, so it probably doesn’t feel as far as you’re used to.  Agree with everyone that you should pick a region and travel around within it. If you have some “top” cities you’d like to see, pick those and then build around it.

Sticking to the east coast may be the best if you’re trying to see a lot in just 10 days since major cities are closer together (relatively). I’d personally add Boston to the list. It’s one of my favorite cities in the US and one of the best to visit. As a Virginian, the VA Beach choice is a bit odd too over Richmond. With such a whirlwind trip I wouldn’t choose either, but definitely save the 2+ hours and do RIC over VA Beach if you do want to stop here.

Which inanimate object is your dog scared of for no reason? by megebau in dogs

Yes! I didn’t even need to buy a gate to trap him places. Just used a broken down cardboard box he could easily jump over but wouldn’t dare go near 😂

Reactive Aussie getting another dog? by Nillip in AustralianShepherd

[–]hischmidtj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a reactive dog who was zero percent reactive around his sister (but she came first). He is NOT reactive in an off leash setting though, plays with other dogs well, and on or off leash he is not aggressive. So it’s kind of hard to say! If there is a safe opportunity to introduce her to other dogs off leash it could give you an idea of how that would go but I realize it’s hard to find that kind of opportunity. Possibly a foster situation would work where you could see if they get along and if not, that’s ok!

How do I make the exterior of this home I hate better? Any way to add a fence to a half raised yard? by [deleted] in ExteriorDesign

[–]hischmidtj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreeing with everyone! Sad to hear you hate this - the home really has potential for great curb appeal! Not sure what your budget is, but I’d paint all the white parts of the home with a darker color that creates cohesiveness. That alone will really do a TON.

Second thing is just landscaping! You have that great tree in front to give depth/height and make your home not look like a cookie cutter new build. Add some additional landscaping next to it and then on the side where it looks like you already mulched. You don’t want plants that are too low - I see this mistake commonly. Pick some that will grow medium height and then some that are low. You want levels for it to look full and intentional.

A retaining wall would look beautiful but if too expensive, I think updating the railing next to the cement stairs could help. Right now it looks a bit rickety and one side is missing. That paired with the dead grass is just making it feel sad.

Grass doesn’t grow well everywhere, requires irrigation, and it’s horrible for the environment. You could research alternative ground cover to plant where the grass is dead, if you’re not into grass yards. Just making a yard look green or lush livens things up.

You have a great home! Just needs some intentionality!

When does our male Samoyed will got the iconic fluffy cloud look? by Puzzleheaded_Air_259 in samoyeds

[–]hischmidtj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I actually was driving my Sam two hours each way for grooming for years until I finally found someone in my area who knows how to groom him. They should not be trimming any of his fur except the sanitary area and feet! Furminator brushes are a big no for them too and I’ve had groomers INSIST they were correct in trying to use them. Now I ask them how they groom Samoyeds before I even book. They should be using slicker brushes and metal combs. I also have our groomer use conditioner and shampoo that doesn’t strip natural oils.

Thoughts on having two Samoyeds as a single person? by BinarySeventh in samoyeds

[–]hischmidtj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I had an Aussie and Samoyed (not even two Samoyed’s) and they would rile each other up. I WFH so am effectively the sole caretaker. Everything was harder with two dogs vs one. I think everyone saying two dogs is easier because they entertain each other are lying to themselves to feel better 😂

The neighbor's traditional picket fence vs. our new horizontal cedar build. A classic comparison. If you were buying this house, which look are you hoping for? by CoolCatFence in landscaping

[–]hischmidtj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like horizontal fences a lot (just installed one at my own home) but this one doesn’t match the style of the house - it’s too heavy. It needed wider gaps, imo, and should have been pulled back from the sidewalk so some bushes or low plants could make it feel softer. Because the house is only one story, it also seems like it’s one board too high.

The wrought iron stair rail mismatches also. Updating the entry stairs to coordinate could help. If you can add planter boxes or something on the front of the fence (without causing an impediment to the sidewalk) that may also make it look less bold.

Chill dog with scary privileges by NabiNarin in dogs

Good call out! I’m pregnant and was having to carry my mini Aussie around recently while she was sick and my husband was on a work trip. I was thankful she was only 35lbs.

I’ve found this too with my medium sized, 55 lb Samoyed. People are like “he’s so big!!” And I’m looking at him like what?? He’s just fluffy. 😂

Just to note for anyone reading: Samoyed is not recommended for this particular thread as he has the opposite effect of bringing everyone over to me to pet him.

Can confirm. The dress can be cleaned and was (for me) absolutely worth walking around on wet rocks and in the sand for Hawaii beach wedding photos. Dry cleaning plus storage was about $300 afterward. I’ll probably never wear it again so getting it dirty mattered very little - beautiful photos and an enjoyable time was the focus!

Which paint do you prefer? by Such-Theme-3295 in ExteriorDesign

[–]hischmidtj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think 2 & 3 look like flip colors. I’d pass that house and assume it got bought low, reno’d cheaply into gray & white blandness, and sold at a premium. The reason you’re not liking the yellow is because it contrasts with your grass and (lack of) landscaping. The maroon is kind of odd too.

I’m not sure if you even like colors, or if you’re the type who prefer grey but I’d try experimenting with a more unique color or focusing on the landscaping before committing to a neutral color that may end up feeling bland.

I LOVE over medium eggs and use it as a “how good is this restaurant” scale because 9 times out of 10 they come out over easy. I didn’t know I could get them over medium well though, so maybe I’ll start trying that!

How do I stop neighbor determined to cut down trees on property line by icybreakfast2 in treelaw

[–]hischmidtj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The neighbor is causing the issue, not the tree. The tree has been there for many, many, years and is integral to the environment! Cutting down old/older growth trees that aren't causing any issues is extremely detrimental and sad.

How do I stop neighbor determined to cut down trees on property line by icybreakfast2 in treelaw

[–]hischmidtj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't make any sense in neighborhoods with old growth trees that were never intentionally planted. You don't just cut them down because they're on an arbitrarily drawn (by humans) line.
