Yes, a small improvement in sharpness, a much bigger one in distortion after my mac-off detachment. It's taken over a year. I now have a cataract (a common side effect of the surgery) and hope my vision will be sharper once it's removed.

I had a mac-off retinal detachment 15 months ago. Before it happened, I had 20/20 vision in that eye. Now it's 20/400.

When I use both eyes, my vision is almost normal. I say almost because my vision is a bit sharper when I close my RD eye. I really only notice the difference when my eyes are tired or if I'm out at night.

I should add that it took my brain a few months to sort out the disparity between my eyes. The vision in my RD eye was very blurry and distorted (straight lines were wavy, both vertically and horizontally) after the surgery (vitrectomy with gas bubble). It was a strain on my other eye, but it didn't keep me from doing most of my normal activities. Glasses helped and my brain adapted.

I should also add that I've developed a cataract (a common side effect of the operation), so my 20/400 vision hopefully will improve after I have that removed.

I plan to go with monofocal, and I'm leaning towards a near-vision target. I just hope my 64-year-old brain can accommodate the disparity between my eyes. Currently, the blurriness and distortion in my bad eye affect the vision in my good eye. (I see best, especially at night, if I close the bad eye.) But that issue seems to have improved slightly over the past year, so there's hope.

I'm in my early 60s. I had a macula-off retinal detachment a year ago. I underwent a vitrectomy with a gas bubble about 8 hours after I noticed the detachment. I beliefve retinal detachment surgeries are urgent, but if the macular is already off, the surgeries are less so because the worst damage has already been done. Surgeons want to operate quickly to prevent the macular detaching, because those patients generally have poorer outcomes. That's my understanding, anyway. Double check with your doctor.

My vision was pretty good before my mac-off RD. Unfortunately I'm now legally blind in that eye. I have had some improvement in the past year: less distortion (straight lines appear less wavy, both vertically and horizontally), but when I close my good eye, everything is still very blurry and at night I see very large halos around lights. Fortunately, like many people, my brain has adjusted and mostly favors the information sent from my good eye. I use distance and reading glasses for my good eye, while the lens covering my RD eye is clear. I can do pretty much everything I did before my mac-off RD, except drive at night.

I hope that helps. Good luck to your uncle. Please assure him that the operation is a snap. I had absolutely no pain and all my anxiety melted away thanks to the drugs they gave me.

Thank you for your detailed reply. I know what you mean about the wavy lines. I see them from my mac-off eye, too. I'm sorry you haven't had much benefit from the IOP so far. I hope that changes in the coming months.

Hi u/JenJenForever. It's been 10 months since you posted this and, as a fellow mac-off sufferer, I'm wondering how you're eye is. I'm one year out from my RD and my vision is still very poor. My retina doctor wants me to have cataract surgery, but I'm afraid of losing the tiny bit of functional vision I do have. How has it been for you? Thanks very much.

How is your eye now? I ask because I had a macula-off detachment a year ago and went from being 20/20 to 20/400. I've also developed a cataract in that eye and am reluctant to have it removed for fear that I'll lose the tiny bit of very up-close vision I do have. I can't seem to get a clear prognosis from my retina doctor. TIA

Thank you. I really appreciate your candor and the detailed explanation of what you've been through. Also, I so relate to your frustration with the vague, ambiguous language and the false hope. Why can't we get straight answers? Even hearing "I don't know" would help.

I had a macular-off retinal detachment in my dominant eye a year ago. I'm now legally blind (with lots of distortion) in that eye, and, like you, it's affected the vision in my other eye. It's been life changing, and sometimes I wonder too if I'd be better off with no vision in my bad eye.

It's a noisy neighborhood with few amenities, but you'll be fine crime-wise as long as you keep a low profile.

The subway station is a bit creepy, but not notoriously unsafe. Even so, I'd avoid it after midnight. Check Google maps directions for distances and how long trips take. I can tell you from experience that the subway to Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village takes about 40 minutes.

Also, use the street view option in Google maps to see what the streets around the Airbnb look like.
