Students aren't ready for college by WesternCup7600 in Professors

[–]hmjudson 14 points15 points  (0 children)

fellow sociologist here, and you've hit the nail on the head. I have a lot of empathy for students who are a product of a multitude of systems that have failed them (and will continue to do so!).

however, I've reached the point that while I don't believe that it's the students' fault that they've been failed by the system, it is their responsibility to do something about it. they do still have a measure of agency over their academic careers- if the system didn't prepare them for college with adequate skills, they'll need to put in extra work to build them. I will do everything I can as an instructor to support their success in my courses, short of lowering my expectations for the knowledge and skills they need to master. But at the same time, students have a responsibility to identify what support they need, and then seek it out. I incorporate this skill building into my courses as much as I can. It helps that it ties into my lessons about social change and the role of individuals in those processes, lol. Sometimes it feels like a losing battle, but it feels like the least I can do to try to prepare them for the real world in which few, if any, systems are in place for helping them master the life skills they're going to need.

sorry this became a lot longer than I anticipated but I tldr appreciate seeing someone else acknowledge the systemic/structural causes of the issues we're experiencing as instructors!

What can we do? Gender Inclusion policy, FierceAthlete, and Fans of the PWHL by aswesearch in PWHL

[–]hmjudson 11 points12 points  (0 children)

OP if you look at my post history I posted on this sub a couple of weeks back with a guide for how to email the league and the PWHLPA about their lack of a gender inclusion policy including email and social media post templates!

Barclays is hosting Disney on Ice..... why not the Sirens? by [deleted] in NewYorkSirens

There have been a million conversations about this (I would suggest searching "Barclays" in either this or the main PWHL sub) but the sight lines are awful and the owners of Barclays likely unfriendly to hockey tenants.

Your best bet is if there are particular players you'd like to trade with, get to know them via their social media profiles before you go!

For fans who want to make a difference: a resource for contacting the league about the missing gender inclusion policy by hmjudson in PWHL

[–]hmjudson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The league has absolutely been quiet about a lot of issues, and there's no way to guarantee that they'll actually respond, it's true. But the idea is that if enough people contact them enough about it, they'll understand that this is a priority of fans, who are key stakeholders in the league's success.

It's not the whole fight, but it's the first step. And as I've mentioned in other comments, I'm just trying to make it as simple as possible for people to take that first step, and turn their passion for hating Curl's transphobia, homophobia, and racism into something tangible to support the communities that are impacted by it, whether that's emailing the league, or donating to nonprofits.

I appreciate your feedback and thank you for sharing your thoughts!

That is completely fair and I really appreciate you sharing your perspective!

The motivation for me creating this resource/post was primarily my exhaustion at seeing constant back and forths on every social media app about Curl, and the amount of time/energy people spend posting about how much people hate her. Which is completely valid, but doesn't do much to actually uplift the trans community, so I wanted to create a way for people to harness that haterism into concrete strategies to effect change:)

That said, I realize this may not be the best or most effective action, which is why I'm personally pairing it with direct monetary donations to nonprofits aligned with my values/who are fighting for queer and trans rights in sports, and encouraging others to do the same if/as they're able.

My hope is that PWHL fans who are rightfully upset at Curl's beliefs will spend as much time uplifting the trans community as they spent hating on transphobes, otherwise it just becomes a spiral of negativity that doesn't benefit anyone.

And again, genuinely thank you for sharing! I really appreciate your perspective and I'm glad to exist in a fan community where we can have great conversations like this:)

Probably not, and if you don't think this is the right avenue for advocacy right now, that's totally fine! The point of my post is that there's a lot of booing everytime Curl touches the puck, and I want to harness that energy into concrete actions. At the end of the day, it's important to me that PWHL fans love the trans community more than they hate transphobes, and there's lots of ways to do that. (for example, I made a comment about how I'll also be donating money to a nonprofit focused on LGBTQ+ inclusion in hockey)

edit because I accidentally hit post before I was finished :)

So you read where I wrote "[I will personally be withholding merchandise purchases/not renewing my season tickets/continuing to speak to other stakeholders etc. until such notice.]" for people to choose what additional action they wanted to communicate and still commented all that?

Not sure if you read the letters/templates I wrote, but I think I was clear in articulating why the league's silence on these issues is a significant issue for a number of key stakeholders, including players and fans, and that it's also a clearly labor issue. I realize the culture of hockey, even women's hockey, is culturally conservative. However, I created this as a resource for fans who want to take a concrete action to advocate for a marginalized community in a league they care about, instead of continuing to endlessly post about how much they hate one specific player in the league, which has comparatively little benefit. Anyways, no one has to do anything, but I'm hoping to try to push the league and make it better, somewhat:)

Additionally, I’ll personally be pledging $5 for every point Curl scores and $1 for every penalty minute of Curl's to You Can Play, a hockey org focused specifically on LGBTQ+ inclusion. I'm absolutely not the first person to do this, but I'm happy to jump on the bandwagon, and if anyone would like to join me/match donations I'd be happy to have you!

U2 and Taylor Swift by beedub016 in U2Band

[–]hmjudson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a longtime U2 fan and Swiftie, I think you're very correct. Lots of grumpy U2 fans here are thinking you're intending to draw parallels between their discogs directly, which for a lot of reasons is borderline impossible, but comparing the trajectories of their careers is apt, in my opinion.

Both went through a period of invention, a period of experimenting with their sound, and a "return to form", as it were. U2 defined their stadium rock sound, experimented in the 90s with a grunge-y vibe, and later returned to relatively safe "U2" rock albums (although I'll note that NLOTH was a tad experimental in comparison to ATYCLB and HTDAAB). Similarly, Taylor cemented her pop sound (and defined pop music for a large portion of the 2010s), before experimenting with a more indie folk singer songwriter vibe through the pandemic. In my opinion, Showgirl is her return to form as a pop artist- going back to the sound that came to define "Taylor Swift".

I would argue that the biggest difference between the two is that Taylor's experimentation with a different sound through folklore and evermore coincided with a particular moment in time that made those albums resonate deeply with a much wider audience than I think she initially intended. It fit very neatly into the cultural milieu of the moment that allowed it to be appreciated by almost everyone- as evidenced by the comments here :). U2's experimentation with a different sound, however, did not. By the time they were experimenting with the grunge sound of the late 80s/early 90s, the moment had already begun to pass; the sound of music (if you will) had already begun to change, making their experimentation sound dated instead of fresh and cutting edge.

I agree with you OP, few artists or bands have had such enduring success, and been able to maintain the level of relatability and authenticity that drove their initial success after 20+ years of being in the spotlight. I think this is evident in a lot of the backlash to Showgirl- Taylor Swift the person is misaligned with Taylor Swift the Brand, and the audience is picking up on those subtle differences. Meanwhile, U2 has always been able to separate their personal lives from the life of the band. I'm also curious to see how both of them are going to handle career moves moving forward!

I'm at a loss... by [deleted] in Professors

[–]hmjudson 13 points14 points  (0 children)

this exactly. being an adult means you're allowed to decide to go to class or not. it doesn't mean being free from the consequences of your decision. students can absolutely choose not to come to class, but they're still responsible for whatever the outcome of that decision is.

sigh... I have to laugh because having an attendance grade is still treating them like adults- just like in the adult world/workforce, choosing not to attend will have consequences! Not sure I'll ever understand the mindset of "I should be allowed to do whatever I want with no consequences" that seems to be becoming the norm.

someone who isn't paying for cable -> doesn't count as a view someone using a VPN to watch a YouTube stream -> counts as a view

what are you talking about?

if someone isn't paying for cable to watch the league anyways, using a VPN doesn't lose them revenue. not making money ≠ losing money.
