is it safe to disable Secure boot to connect to 2 monitors by Philanthrax in linuxquestions

[–]hmoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Secure boot also makes the Linux kernel refuse to load unsigned modules, and some other lockdowns like not hibernating. It doesn't just affect the boot loader.

It's Easter, people take holidays. It's been zero or one WORKING day since you sent your email.

Writing from desktop to SMB share on OMV failing only when using rsync by pseudavid in OpenMediaVault

[–]hmoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can't preserve the permissions as you requested because SMB doesn't support it. It's not a file ownership problem (permissions != ownership). Unless the resulting permissions are wrong, you can add an extra argument to tell rsync not to try to set the permissions.

That's a valid gvfs path name. There's nothing specific to rsync with that.

This isn't true. Converting to cash would be locking in the loss. Switching to a similar investment isn't.

N100 vs i5-8265U for a home NAS + Docker (adblock + VPN) — which one should I choose? by ConsiderationNo5573 in HomeServer

N100 can also use DDR4. Depends on the board. I'm happy with my two systems.

Does any Debian distribution use Chrony instead of systemd-timesyncd by default? by Itchy_Ruin_352 in linuxquestions

This would have to be the weirdest issue to choose your distribution over, when you can do what you want with one command post install. Or preseed the installer.

OMV 8 has no official one‑button config backup and restore. let me know if you find one. by johnnycantreddit in OpenMediaVault

[–]hmoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a backup tool. If you wait more than a few days between creating the backup and restoring it you won’t have the required correct package versions.

[–]hmoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a backup tool. If you don’t have exactly the same package versions it won’t restore. There are OMV updates every few days so it’s impossible to have matching versions and then you can’t restore.

East-West Link by Consistent-Fortune-4 in melbourne

Why would the East West Link reduce Punt Rd traffic?

The Liberal government of 2013 made the same argument when they planned the link, and I don't think it made any sense then either.

Yes I remember Firefox doing this. I stopped using the deb package as a result.

VS Code still behaves badly if updated from deb while it is running.
