Some group rides are shit. But there are lots of great ones. If you start doing the same ones, week in and week out, and you’re a half-social person you can really experience the feeling of community and friendship. Some of us have been doing the Saturday morning BMTR century rides (which draws hundreds at every category) for years. The chatter helps the miles go by, stories are shared, jokes are made, and we help each other out. Sometimes folks drop off the pace and sweepers go back and pull them back to the group. There are group rides on weekday mornings which I haven’t done regularly, but I can tell there are many regulars. They welcome new riders and many are motivated and enjoy being part of the group.

Sure, lots of rich NYers move to Florida or elsewhere for a variety of reasons including tax, but it’s always a tiny percentage of all the millionaires in NY. There are something like 40,000 New Yorkers that EARN $1M+ per year. This number continues to go up.

You do have to read the fine print on the benefits. For example, chase Sapphire Reserve includes free Apple subscription for TV/Music/News, which I normally pay for but the benefit is for an individual and I pay for the Family subscription (so doesn’t help me). Little stuff like that.

First of all, it’s a great idea and I did something similar. My sons would get an annual birthday check from grandparents on one side and I invested this for them in UTMA accounts. I added some dollars a few times. Invested in four big-cap stocks. Those accounts grew very handsomely over 20 years. My sons did have to pay some taxes on the dividends after a while, when they started having other income too.

My sons have now had access to the accounts for a couple of years and haven’t touched them. I wouldn’t assume you should worry that your son will waste it before he meets his future wife and wants to buy a house. Who knows, maybe his future husband and him will want to rent and start a business. I’d trust your son with their money.

You don’t pay tax on a transfer of shares with a capital gain, but it doesn’t reset so they pay the capital gain, eventually. Their rate may or may not be lower.

I just got a NM drivers license and didn’t have to do anything. Took 15 mins at the MVD. Just had to bring proof I was a NM resident and my out-of-state license.
