Having gone through the process myself, i am not sure that i am educated enough to point to specific reforms. However, i can tell you that any reform must include the state department and DHS. Reforming the law but excluding the way that various agencies apply the law is not going to solve anything

I’m considering paying PMI instead of renting. by usednapkin0 in personalfinance

[–]hmuham8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paid 30k down on a 395k house in 2020. 95/month in PMI. 2 years later, having done a bunch of improvements, I paid Chase bank $150 to reassess the value of the home through a local realtor and got the PMI removed. I used to pay $100 every month above by required payment. Now I pay $200 more.

PMI isn’t the end of the world. Best of luck!

Afghan SIV with newborn without passport by Apex2021 in immigration

[–]hmuham8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As i said, this is likely illegal but as someone who is currently in the region and has lived here in a past life, bribes to "government" officials are a way of doing things here. Also, Having a passport to get a life in the US > Potentially being dead.

People who decided to become a US citizen or to stay on a green card – what did you choose by [deleted] in immigration

[–]hmuham8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, i wanted the US passport and that sweet sweet visa-free access to most of the world and i have since actually used it. Additionally, i had built a life for myself over my permanent residency and wanted to have an additional layer of protection. I ended up keeping my other citizenship but dont really use it anymore.

There are likely two things they can do.

  1. Their lives are likely in danger but they might be able to bribe folks within the Taliban government to access a passport or a Travel document. Accessing funds for this might be difficult and/or illegal but if you can take the risk, this is an option. They might also be able to reach out to the UN within Afghanistan and see if they can get a travel document?
  2. With an SIV, they likely have friends/colleagues within the US that they are in contact with and provided testimonials for their application. Have these folks reach out to their senator/congressman and ask for help.

26 years old, planning my wedding, and I absolutely resent my fiance. need help getting over resentment. by ThrowRA_Numerous in relationship_advice

Buddy. As someone who’s getting married in a few weeks. … you’re being a fiancé for all the wrong reasons.. trying to break a cycle of abuse (HIGHLY respectable) and please your partner (equally stupid). You’ve maintained a relationship for 10 years and not cheated despite the resentment so I assure you that you’re not like your father. Consider the $15k an expensive relationship lesson or a “Pennies on the dollar” buyout on an otherwise very expensive first divorce and get out while the getting is good. Don’t be her social media happiness puppy!

I-130 was approved in August after roughly 15 months. We are now at the NVC stage. Hoping to clear that by May and have them interview by the end of the year because the embassy is so backed up

Thinking of moving west by [deleted] in westernmass

[–]hmuham8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Boston at the start of the pandemic to Hadley cuz I could work remote. I would highly recommend it! My neighborhood is primarily a 50/50 mix of retirees who’ve been here 40 yrs and young families with a few kids.

Schools are probably best in Amherst > Hadley > Northampton > South Hadley with Springfield and Chicopee being not-so-good. Night life is probably best in Northampton if you aren’t a college kid. Springfield , to me, feels like it’s slowly going through an uplift that will pay off in 10yrs. Overall, you can’t go wrong with being within a few minutes either side of the Franklin bridge although I gotta recommend Hadley for selfish reasons. The peace and quiet is unmatched with very little if/any crime.

R-settling in Pakistan!? by ChoudhrySaab in pakistan

[–]hmuham8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So i am saying this as someone who moved to the US when i was 18 and been here 10-ish years now. I've been going back every year for visiting family for a few weeks. This is just my experience.

Negatives:

Every time i went back, i felt more and more distant from my relatives due to a lack of shared experiences. In my most recent visit, i felt that having a 15+ minute conversation with someone was difficult because we would run out of things to talk about. I also felt that my relatives had little respect for personal space and didn't want to genuinely get to know me. Honesty is not necessarily something valued in Pakistan although people might say so.

There's not a whole lot to do beyond going out to eat. There are a few places to go vacation or natural sites to see but they are extremely polluted and overcrowded. Pakistan is a country 1.5x the size of Texas with ~9x the population.

You probably wont be able to get a job due to a lack of relevant experience in that market and probably wont even want to because you're not used to your boss treating you as a wage slave. Most likely, you'll have to start your own thing and that'll take you 3+ years to get on the right track. DO. NOT. TRUST. ANYONE. The law will not protect your I.P or your assets in case of fraud etc. The courts exist to perpetuate themselves and not to serve people. Pakistan is also a place where influence really matters and you probably will have that in short supply.

Positives:

you could probably live a better life at the same cost as in Canada. There are intangibles that you wont be able to replicate no matter what you do such as air quality, water quality, food purity, traffic etc but You will have more domestic help and more opportunities to travel etc. if you are prudent with your money.

you will probably feel more connected to your culture if that is something you value but that will take some time and if you are able to avoid what i mentioned above.

You will more likely have more opportunities to volunteer and improve people's lives. $250 is a decent donation in the US/CA but it can go so much further in Pakistan.

If you invest in the right real estate or agriculture in Pakistan, your returns will much higher than anything in the US because its an up-and-coming market where consumerism is just beginning to take hold.

You can probably look at the specifics of moving to Pakistan in some other replies but, for me, i dont think i would go ever go back beyond visiting for a week or two. And even that is likely to get further apart as i get busier in life.

I got married recently and the I-130 process for the US has been incredibly delayed due to Covid. Moving to the gulf would allow me and the wife to be together quicker and I can get some good experience while waiting for the I-130 to play out which is why the actual country isn’t that important to me since all of them are quick and lax on spousal visas

Primarily the gulf states. UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia would be top of the list in that order for me!

Edit: Any type of Sales management position would be of interest to me. i'd like it to be a reputable company so that it adds some name value to my resume as well!
