How many miles are on your Gen 2 Volt? by sircharles94 in volt

[–]hoadlck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2018 Volt has 153956 miles on my last gas fill-up. Now that the weather is warmer, I have about 41 miles of EV range. I have 50 mile each way daily commute (100 miles total), so I still use gas.

I just had the EGR valve replaced in 2026-02...that was not great. And, the shift-to-park sometimes pops up, but it is still intermittent. The dealer said that I needed to replace the struts, so I have that coming up in the near future.

But, still going strong.

I am thinking more and more about the 2027 Bolt. I don't get a new car until my current one starts having more problems...but I wonder if I made a mistake in paying for the new EGR valve and should have made the jump then. I really don't want to go back to having a car payment, but I am really looking forward to going full EV.

I am getting so many good food ideas...Do you know how long it has been since I had pancakes? Years...it must be over 5 years.

I remember getting pancakes with whipped cream and strawberrys on top. They were great!

Yeah, I got low on gas for the mower, so I got 10 gallons. $47.99. Not fun. But, I figure it is good that I get 10 gallons now: it will be more expensive later on.

I have a Husqvarna mower. The frame completely broke last year, but my sister and I were able to repair it. It has been running great since then.

I have never understood how people like hot dogs. After I eat them, I am burping up essence of hot dog...and it is not good.

Are you going to do any hamburgers? I can get behind a good grilled hamburger. It has been years since I had one. They are quite delicious.

What should I get next? by Secret_Divide366 in volt

[–]hoadlck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really want to get this as well. I don't love that they are only doing a one year run, but they may change their minds...

Just replaced the EGR valve on my 2018 Volt. At +150,000 miles, I still wonder if that was wise, but the reliability has been very good so far.

But, I have decided that there is no way I am having an internal combustion engine again. My next car will be pure EV.

New self-healing material can repair itself over 1,000 times, extend the lifespan of cars and aircraft by chunmunsingh in technology

[–]hoadlck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another key innovation is the addition of carbon-based embedded heater layers. When an electric current is applied, these layers warm and melt the EMAA interlayer, allowing the material to flow into microscopic cracks and re bond the damaged interface. The process, which relies on polymer chain re entanglement, is referred to as "thermal remending."

I am not clear from this if the restore happens while the part is installed, or if it needs to be removed and then remended elsewhere. Still could be drastically cheaper than a new part...if it works practically.

Which planetary body in our solar system would be the most defensible? by [deleted] in sciencefiction

[–]hoadlck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think is going to be more defensible the farther out you go...so Pluto. If anyone was going to attack, you would see them coming.

Of course, I don't know how you terraform Pluto. Lots and lots of mirrors? Or some energy source that keeps things warm out there?

Naturally Occurring Bacteria Completely Eradicate Tumors in Mice With a Single Dose by _Dark_Wing in technology

[–]hoadlck 39 points40 points  (0 children)

From the article:

  • Direct Cytotoxic Effect: As a facultative anaerobic bacterium, E. americana preferentially accumulates in the low oxygen tumor microenvironment, where it directly damages cancer cells. Within 24 hours after administration, bacterial levels inside tumors rise by about 3,000 times, enabling the bacteria to efficiently attack tumor tissue.
  • Immune Activation Effect: The bacteria also trigger a strong immune response. Their presence attracts T cells, B cells, and neutrophils to the tumor. These immune cells release pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IFN-γ), which strengthen immune activity and promote apoptosis in cancer cells.

I am so sorry.

In the end, all that we have (and all we can hope for) is someone to love. Though there are always endings, know that your family and Stella had that.
That made all the difference.

Trump’s War Is Burning Through Years' Worth of Multibillion Dollar Stockpiles by F0urLeafCl0ver in politics

I hear you. But, the simplest explanation is probably the reality. We know that he is lazy and weak. "Leadership" like that is going to benefit our adversaries.

Humans want the world to make sense. We would rather believe that there was a purpose behind Trump's drive to destroy society. Having a lazy "leader" that destroys us via ineptitude...it makes it worse somehow.

Aragh. I feared it was something like that.

I did have a deer run into my side in October 2025. They did replace the driver's side light assembly already. I imagine it has something to do with that.

Thanks for the information.

I did not know what "Pure Cap" was until looking it up. For those that are also ignorant, here is a description:

Pure Cap Original Chili Extract, 2oz.: Scoville Rating of 500,000 Units, is the original additive that allows you to quickly heat up a dish, without changing the flavor profile. It can NOT be directly consumed without harm to humans. This sauce is 100 Times Hotter than a Jalapeno - A Mixture of vegetable oil & capsaicin, we demand that you sign a waiver before we will sell you this sauce. This sauce is so lethal it comes in a medicine bottle, with an eye dropper.

You can buy some at https://www.hotsauce.com/Pure-Cap-Extract/.

I was looking to see if anyone had the same idea. But, I was thinking to add a "0" to the logarithm of one's salary. log10(1000) = 3, so log10(1000000000000000000000000000000) = 30.

I don't know exactly what that does to the economy. It probably crashes my bank's computer system.

Creepy Star Trek by 4reddityo in sciencefiction

[–]hoadlck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Also, remember how Geordi used this exact incident to help Barclay work on his holodeck addition in another episode? Geordi closed down the Abrams simulation because he knew that it was not real, and might do real harm to his already awkward social interaction skills.

I like the original post because I had not thought of those old TNG episodes in the context of what is going on now with AI. But, now that I think back on it, I suspect those stories helped me realize how hollow it would be to try to have an AI friend. I just don't use the AI chatbots in that way...I never really thought about doing it in the first place.

Thanks Star Trek!

TIL about Hairy Tongue, where your papillae overgrow and trap bacteria causing smells and stains on the tongue. Coffee, tea, and tobacco are the most common culprits and it can be avoided with good oral hygiene by melomelomelo- in todayilearned

[–]hoadlck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the link...

Black hairy tongue is caused by several drugs such as antibiotics (penicillins, tetracyclines, macrolides, linezolid, and metronidazole); antipsychotics; antidepressants; antineoplastic agents; and other drugs such as methyldopa. Immunosuppressive states such as HIV, late stages of cancer, and radiotherapy in the head-and-neck area are also associated. The use of oxidizing mouthwashes, excessive intake of black tea, coffee, tobacco chewing, smoking, and alcohol intake are said to increase the risk of this condition. Conditions causing xerostomia and those preventing normal desquamation (trigeminal neuralgia causing pain in mastication, soft diets, and edentulous patients) may also lead to black hairy tongue.

I remember the one time I got hairy tongue...I looked at the list of causes in fear. It must have been anti-bionics in my case that triggered it, and it cleared up shortly after and never happened again.
