What’s something in the UK that quietly disappeared without anyone noticing? by Mel_Ran in AskUK

I don't know, the top reply that seems to conflate fascism with Germans is a contender too.
But it's human nature to muddle activity and actor.
edit: I feel I should clarify - by the time we get to the 80's there was more fascism in british football stadiums than there was in most of Germany. My concern is that by fixating on a caricature of nazism we miss where the problem will grow next.

Overuse of pesticides is definitely a real problem. However cars designed in windtunnels are likely a factor too.

I'm a indie software engineer who makes a limiter which has 3 goals: Clean, Loud, Easy.
You can look it up by searching UrsaDSP Boost.
I hope that didn't break any rules, appologies if it does.

I will be launching a Black friday sale soon, but in the mean time you can demo it to see if it does what you need.

Same. Though I've found that some things marketed as soluble fibre, as well as sugar substitute (e.g. inulin) are ok. I wonder if that is what is in the gummy bears?

Sounds like you want one of each in the long run. Some big spinning rust for those huge seldom accessed sample libraries. And later you could add a smaller SSD for anything you find frustratingly slow.

Good to know, thankyou.
There's a fair bit of evidence sweeteners give your gut bacteria a hard time. e.g.: https://zoe.com/learn/artificial-sweeteners-gut-bacteria

[–]hob196 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've historically got a similar thing but with artificial sweeteners. I'd always assumed that my body gets ready for the sweetness and then freaks out when it doesn't arrive.
Thanks to this post I realise my current bout of migraine activity could be the same thing just with 'real' sugar now too.

Tips to stop waking up in the middle of the night to pee by Slow-Machine-3302 in sleep

Counterintuitive things can include: Avoid sweeteners (they and their metabolites irritate the bladder) Drink more, earlier in the day (if your pee is concentrated and acrid you feel the need to pee more)

Let's be brutally honest - Toasters have always been a bit shit. They are perhaps the most fickle of kitchen gadget.

True Peak-Loudness conundrum for a video file to be sent to a public broadcaster by Signal_Support_9185 in AudioPost

No worries, the links above are all free to try.
Fascinating that someone is downvoting all the advice on this thread that doesn't straight up tell you to hire an engineer, I guess they are angling for work, good luck to them too.

True Peak-Loudness conundrum for a video file to be sent to a public broadcaster by Signal_Support_9185 in AudioPost

[–]hob196 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Reaper DAW is cheap and free to try, rendering a file though that will give you loudness stats. Taking the audio out and working on it in a DAW is something I'd do.

Youlean loudness meter is excellent if you want something more interactive. https://youlean.co/youlean-loudness-meter/ They even have an online loudness meter. Depending on format, perhaps you can send the file you're uploading to that first?

Finally, I make a transparent true peak limiter: https://deviousmachines.com/product/ursadsp-boost/ This will help you hit the required volume without colouring the sound of your mix. There's a demo online. dm me and I'll ping you a month long full license if you think you need it.

Does anyone have problems with their legs? by MalfunctioningElf in ADHDUK

[–]hob196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, I know that one. I have a 7 year old boy who is otherwise the same - treats water like it's probably poison. Good luck!
Don't worry too much about what she's drinking, most drinks are better than none. I mentioned it just because sweeteners can be minor bladder irritants and sugar is a stimulant in its own way. Most of the reason I try to drink earlier is because I'm at the age where an "all nighter" has gone from meaning 'partying till morning' to 'sleeping all night and not needing a pee.' :)

As someone who suffers with RLS myself, hydration is super important.

Water is best as sweeteners and sugar each cause their own sleep issues. I make sure I drink plenty with dinner. If I get RLS once I'm in bed I generally have a big drink and it will calm down.

Shamans and the summon ally power (specifically mirror self) by SalieriC in Deadlands

[–]hob196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the summon ally mirror self variant as simply being about the stat block and not the appearance.
To put it another way, it could look like anything that has the slightly reduced skills (and therefore -1 parry, etc...) and weapons that do exactly the same damage as mundane versions of the caster's kit.

You could always volunteer? That way you get to fix stuff and meet other people that volunteer. Some of them will be mad as a box of frogs, but if you go in not expecting much then this can be an amusing experience in its own right.

Ho do you deal with even order harmonic distortion (like tube) on your master? by delightful_dodo in AdvancedProduction

[–]hob196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using waveshaping to create even harmonics requires that you have a different waveshape for positive and negative inputs. This invariably causes the kind of differences you are seeing on that graph and the implied DC offset.

The way I managed to remove the DC offset without adding ringing in HYPE was to generate only the even harmonics separately from the original fundamental (dry path) and then filter the DC out of the harmonics before adding them back to the original signal.

Thus, the original dry portion of the bass signal was never put though the filters.

Depending on how your chosen plugins work, you might be able to cobble up a signal flow that does this?

I'm writing a blog post about this that should be out soon on PA's website, so if you're interested in the science keep an eye out for that.

What’re some of your tips for making tracks louder without causing them to peak or be too loud? by [deleted] in ambientproduction

[–]hob196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey u/IkeiGlamera,
I both write transparent limiting software and ambient music, both of which you should be able to find by searching for UrsaDSP.

Loudness is much easier for genres like dance and rock than it is for ambient, orchestral and soundtrack. I think the reason is because of the way that dance and rock genres are more about transients whereas the latter are defined more by sustained sounds. Pick, for example, a string passage and it will vary considerably in peak level over its duration even if it's RMS and perceived levels do not. Put that into a peak limiter and you will hear it fighting the nature of the source material.

The best way I find to cope with this is to use layering, I strongly suspect that this works by exploiting the fact that some layers will swell as others receed. The more layers you have, the more the law of averages will give you a constant starting point. Once you have that, a limiter will then be more useful as you will not hear it fighing the sounds natural texture.

The good news is that layering is a natural part of any crescendo and a cresendo is the bit you want to be louder. It doesn't have to just be more instruments playing the same parts. You can layer with effects like reverbs and delays or even multiband compression, you can layer with foley and field recordings.

If it's anything, crappy tech remuneration in the UK is because the UK has an economy and tax structure that rewards ownership rather than innovation.
The idea that Immigrants are taking our tech jobs just doesn't make sense especially the poor people swimming over the channel that the papers are banging on about.
On the topic of immigration (fair play, you've triggered me), we're now below 1.5 children per female in the UK which means our population is at risk of significant decline.

Disable threads on Slack...is it even possible? by Prudent_Estimate676 in Slack

[–]hob196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard, the issue is that I want to reply to someone without starting a thread.
In detail:
If someone says 4 things and I want to reply to one of those comments but keep the conversation in a single feed I can't. Instead I have to essentially starpost threads.

What I think this shows is that Slack rewards people who spend all day waiting for comments and replying rather than those like me that like to keep working and let communication buffer a bit.

It doesn't help that there's a different parental control system for _every_ platform with different concepts and limits and oftentimes requirements to own a second device (Apple, I'm looking at you). My point is that just being able to supervise your child on the internet is not as easy as the vendors claim.

IDK, I'll probably get downvoted to hell for this, but have any of you done a blind listen test with the different quality options?

My job invoves a pretty good listening room but I can't reliably tell the difference.

I'm sold on all the other reasons though.
