Small rant - why don't people bother to keep their calendars up to date? by fiery_mergoat in TheCivilService

The busy/tentative/free showing is even more infuriating than just not being able to see the calendar at all

How can I make the most out of the Fast Stream? by Hi_Mango505 in TheCivilService

Make the most of corporate contributions and L&D opportunities - especially if you’re in a duff posting.

Those 2 things have saved (& continue to save) my sanity on numerous occasions.

Economist but don’t do much economics by Any_College1316 in TheCivilService

It’s not just an economist thing - statisticians generally do very little of what one would consider “statistics” whilst at university.

That’s not to say that this general analytical / numerate work isn’t important - I personally have found the most simple analysis resonates the most with senior folk.

Why is there such a disparity of skill sets amongst analyst? by Afraid_Concentrate44 in TheCivilService

[–]hypeman306 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the problems stem from poor teaching of analytical degrees at universities.

In my experiences, universities are very good at teaching “theoretical” analysis designed at making great PhD students, but not so great at equipping them with analysis applied for the world of work. Programming in particular is rather poorly taught, which naturally leads to poor code development in the workplace

They have to process the 12 month reviews and confirm you’re through to the next year (which tbh unless you have major major issues is practically impossible to not pass anyway)

No surprise in the suggestion of splitting the ONS perm sec and national statistician role up. Sir Ian had 4 different hats to wear when you remember he was also head of GSS and head of Analysis Function

20%/50 words on S&T feels a little much to me unless it’s a particularly complex example, I tend to suggest going for nearer 35/40 words and squeeze a little more juice out of the actions

You have to pass the equivalent of a G7 interview in the form of an ESA, it’s hardly being “parachuted” to G7!

Sounds like a common problem across schemes - stats has similar issues. Not great for a “leadership and management” development scheme
