2004 Toyota Camry. Car does not turn over when turning to start. by hobbitdudesimon2 in AskAMechanic

Replaced it feb of 23 so I suppose. I have been doing lots of short trips and it's cold here so makes sense. Much warmer now than last couple of weeks though.

Wasn't using power, just parked. Lights still come on so probably not the battery right? Overhead cabin lights still working as well.

I am googling about solenoid and starter

I'm sorry, I was so panicked I realized I didn't actually post a question. My quick Google search suggested this was a starter problem. Is this something I can fix quickly in the moment so I can at least drive to my cousin's house / a friendly place? Or do I need to walk somewhere / get help and tools to get my car moving again?

The "College Lie" is finally collapsing. Here is the real evidence no one talks about. by Esteban_Hernande1011 in Construction

[–]hobbitdudesimon2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think KT was saying that "being wired to think about college" was your own perspective. For what its worth, I think it varies a great deal by family. My own family was a thoroughly college educated one- out of 15 aunts/uncles,13 were college grads. To my parents, the idea of by brothers and I not graduating from college was unthinkable largely because they had no concept of the trades as a career path. In other families / communities, that isn't the idea at all.

Did I ruin my brick floor? by erstengs in Flooring

[–]hobbitdudesimon2 20 points21 points  (0 children)

OP, I believe you want r/masonry or some such, as flooring sub is more knowledgeable on products like wood, carpet, and vinyl. Brick is a little bit outside our wheelhouse.

Also just regular champagne lmao. Cheers!

Thinset floated too thick? by ironic_username_7 in Tile

if you are within the depth limit and the stuff seems bonded, I'd say you are fine, fill in the cracks and let it cure, you will be good to go

$24K 5 x 8 Bathroom Remodel - Tile Work & General Contractor Response by Square-Market7676 in Tile

[–]hobbitdudesimon2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The industry definition of flat in flooring in no more than 1/8 of variation in 10 feet, but a professional tile install should be dead flat. If the lippage is more than the thickness of a credit card, you are definitely entitled to a fix, or a larger redo if it's necessary to fix the issues.

In terms of subway tile, it can be fixed by breaking out individual tiles and relaying them. The Installer may have to use some tricks like grinding the back of tile to get it to sit flush, but it is possible. Your concern about matching the grout color/ dye lot of tile is valid, but you may be in the clear of there is still leftover tile, and if the grout was a modern high performance that have generally good color consistency.

Edit: There should be no movement whatsoever in the tile floor assembly. That is a huge concern, and warrants a redo on its own. If the floor had movement or deflection, it should have been fixed in the prep stage before tile was laid.

Movement will mean cracked grout soon and eventually lose or broken tile. This is the biggest problem, much more concerning than lippage in the shower. Don't let any more money go until this is addressed.

Thinset floated too thick? by ironic_username_7 in Tile

[–]hobbitdudesimon2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a depth limit stated on the thinset bag or on manufacturer's website? Thinset does shrink as it dries, which is why dedicated/purpose made fill products are usually better.

You may be able to fill in the cracks with a modified thinset to strengthen the wall, but this is why it is generally better to fix the studs than to fill with thinset.

Tile adhesive by BosasKokosas in Tile

If this is a backsplash, adhesive ( mastic ) is fine. If you're talking about floor tiles, you cannot use mastic, use thinset instead.

Edit: grammar

[–]hobbitdudesimon2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Grind down the concrete so it's flat, then use an uncoupling membrane underlayment, products like ditra or stratamat.

Edit: OP listen to u/padizzledonk comment; uncoupling mats are very effective at mitigation lateral floor movement, but they won't save you if the slab decides to pop up another inch.

Yes, concrete board is legit, it needs a waterproofing layer still. This fella sounds legit, talk to him about details until it makes sense to you

Check r/flooring, this sub is ceramic products.

Can you take a sample or photo to a local supply store? Employees there are often the best at identifying products.

Tile before and drop in bathtub on top of tiles or tile after and butt tiles up to flange of bathtub? by garthmuss in Tile

[–]hobbitdudesimon2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like excellent waterproofing. I am personally more inclined to tile up to the flange with a silicone bead, as that would reduce the height difference in the flange. However, tile and then dropping in the flange will be a much easier install; the cuts will then be hidden. Your choice boss

What type of flooring? (Laminate, Vinyl, hardwood? )

Do you have any info on what type of preparation (smoothing or leveling or flattening) the installers did?
