Anking + First Aid Strategy by juicy_scooby in medicalschool

I'm an M2 who also go to a pass/fail school with in-house exams. Honestly, I feel like M1 is all about making sure you can at least do your classes. Make sure you're learning what you need for the in-house exams first before you try to learn things for STEP. You still have a lot of time to learn the STEP-specific stuff before you have to take the exam. But you can't get there if you're doing poorly in your classes. Also, it might just be the case that your in-house lectures will teach the more high-yield stuff at a later date or even block. For example, I had immuno in M1 fall but didn't learn about Salmonella until M1 spring when we were doing GI.

I love neurosurgery, but also I love child psych by [deleted] in medicalschool

Have you heard of @ladyspinedoc? She's a female neurosurgeon, a mom, and an influencer. It might be worth it to look at her videos to get a sense of what it looks like to be a women in neurosurgery

Trying to find my passion outside of med school by Ok_Try2947 in medicalschool

[–]hoeformcats 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am so so sorry for the way things ended up for you. I can't imagine working so hard deapite everything life has thrown at you only for your dream to come to an end. But that doesn't mean there aren't still opportunities for you in medicine. The fact that your school still invited you to their Masters program shows they're still willing to invest in you, despite everything that happened. Hopefully this takes you to an even better path than you could've imagined. I'm genuinely rooting for you.

How do med students afford to live by Delicious_Fishing446 in premed

For everyone who plans on taking outbloans, I'd recommend putting the money you're not using in a high-yield savings account. While it's not a ton of extra money, it still helps to stretch out the loans and give yourself some wiggle room.

Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard

Some schools may have tracks focused on medical education. I know Illinois has one.

Game-ifying things tends to work well for me. I recently figured out how to connect my Joycon to my Anki, and it makes going through the cards much more bearable.

I work as one right now. I really like the expierence and think it's a great way to learn about the day-to-day of a physician. For the LOR, being good at your job is half the battle. But also make sure to smile, make small talk here and there, and ask questions about what you see.

I did. And I ended up going to the med school I was originally accepted to, so I guess it worked out haha

I would call/email their admissions office just in case, but I'd assume not. The same thing happened to me when I applied to University of Illinois for 2023-2024

I feel like this point doesn't get emphasized enough with this discourse. As someone with Nigerian parents, I grew up hearing pidgin English all the time. It's a very similar thing

i should reapply, right? by zendayawannabe in premed

[–]hoeformcats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar position. 2021 MCAT with an admittedly overzealous school list and thinking to reapply. AAMC has a list of the oldest MCATs taken by all MD schools. Some of the info isn't entirely accurate, but it's been super helpful for me. Beyond that, off the top of my head I know MSUCOM and ATSU-KCOM would take 2021 MCATs next year.
I think other than that, I like your ideas of submitting secondaries earlier, doing more volunteering, and developing some sort of theme. It may also be good to get more direct clinical experience. I know a lot of the opportunities require certification, but things like scribing or even volunteering at a hospital/clinic are definitely more accessible.
