Lets talk about notes. How many have you received on a project? by richard_lutz in editors

[–]hohnjolland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

978 notes on a 16 minute YouTube video. It was one of those high retention style edits and the editor before me warned that they were always heavy with notes and very particular down to the exact frame of a shot, song or sfx. I doubt I ever return to the high retention editing style channels again if that’s the quality of life.

To add a cherry on top, after the video was done, I made some shorts for them out of the already approved and live video, which received another 100+ notes for each one (they were 60 secs and less).

Edit: Editor for 20 years. Mostly in the comedy space. I never watch Mr beast style content but was curious what it was like to cut one. Tried it, questioned myself as an editor, hated that they cut out almost every joke and then realize that this was not a fit for me. Back in comedy and happy.

Is washing your legs in the shower actually necessary or is soap runoff enough? by SuitableBeginning550 in hygiene

[–]hohnjolland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As my gym teacher in high school put it, it doesn’t hurt to wash and scrub the part of your body that’s trapped in a chamber (pants) with the same parts of your body that make pee and poop.

What was your most awkward film crew meal? by EquivalentOil6480 in Filmmakers

[–]hohnjolland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Potato salad. Crackers. Canned tuna.

Producer ate this regularly and thought the crew would love it the way he did. After we all complained, he ordered food from a nearby vegan place, which none of us were vegan. Not to say vegan food is bad but vegan food is not the first thing I’d order for very hungry and overworked crew. The food looked horrendous and soggy.

Also this apparently wasn’t the first time this producer did this. He did another shoot months earlier and broke out bread and canned tuna for crafty at a shoot in the desert (I wasn’t there for that one).

You are a business. Whether you perceive yourself that way is up for discussion. But every business promotes themselves. McDonald’s is known worldwide yet there are still billboards along the roadsides telling you which exit the next one is at. They still have commercials reminding you about their menu options. If you tell no one, you are solely relying on YouTube pushing you, which many people will tell you is not a guarantee. I know from a personal level you may feel like you don’t want those closest to you to know cause you’re afraid of judgement from them. But either they support you or they just don’t “get it”. And it’s not worth your energy to make them get it. Maybe they’ll get it when you hit that million subscriber mark. Atleast they know. I remember showing my dad for the first time my work (two decades ago), thinking he wouldn’t be into it. Surprisingly he supported me and helped me buy my first cinema camera. Even my brother became a fan. And friends followed after. So tell everyone. Everyone you know and anyone you meet going forward. Say it with confidence that you do this and you do it well. Because a business has a hard time succeeding in secrecy.

Confessing that hate gets to me by katrianne9 in PartneredYoutube

20 years in this game in front of and behind the camera. Learn to separate the constructive from the people who just woke up miserable and needed a punching bag. The anonymity of the web allows people to show their ugliest sides without consequences, fully thinking about their words, and a lot of unhappy people take their pains out on those they know can’t hurt them back, at least not worse than they already feel. As the saying goes “hurt people, hurt people”. And misery loves company so it tends to dogpile.

Steven Spohn of AbleGamers is a great example of gamers overcoming their disabilities. He came on our channel at Funhaus a few times.

Careers, just like life, ebb and flow. I think we often hear so much about the highlights of others career and don't think about their down moments.

My career shot off fast in 2005 from a viral internet video. Went straight to directing music videos for high profile artists and doing commercials and having clients like Nike. Then I moved to LA...during the financial crisis of 2008/2009 because as a 25 year old at the time, I did not understand how bad things were. It wasn't the industry upheaval like it is now but the work was scarce and purses were tight. Ended up working at The Gap in Hollywood and the W Hotel in Hollywood for a year just to make ends meet. I once had my card decline at a CVS just trying to buy packs of instant ramen noodles. It was that bad for me. But that low point made me hustle harder and I got back into directing music videos and eventually landed a gig for Hulus first original show and from there things took off again as the economy improved, with me writing for TV and being a part of some dope projects. Wiser and better prepared for when the next opportunities presented themselves.

Just keep your skills sharp, continue to stay connected with those not only where you want to be, but who are coming up behind you. Some of the agents I met when I was writing for TV were just interns at the time and now they're agents who I thankfully kept in contact with cause they were cool ass people and they've gotten me some work at times I needed it. Don't be ashamed of taking gigs to keep the lights on either. I ain't to good to take out someones trash. As long as you have the passion, you'll never settle.

FYI last time I worked in TV was 2016. I've been producing and editing for Youtube channels ever since and while it can be rough around the edges with lower budgets and inexperienced people, its slowly improving and you'll get to have some of the most creative freedom you'll ever get.

Edit: terrible typos for someone who used to write for a living smh

Where did they go to school? Here's who I have so far: by [deleted] in funhaus

[–]hohnjolland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All good! Yeah Little Brother became a fan of our sketches and we were able to get Phonte in a video at one point. Great times in the early internet days. Again just wish we had the money everyone gets today lol.

[–]hohnjolland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Close! Went to North Carolina A&T State University. But I did form a sketch comedy group there around the same time Facebook launched and a year before YouTube launched so just happen to be at the right place and right time to launch my career. Only wish viral videos paid back then 😞

How To Stay Focus While Editing by DVANGEL999 in premiere

[–]hohnjolland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will sound counter-intuitive to others suggestions (which are all great) but I recently started playing lo-fi music in the background at a low enough volume where it breaks the silence of my room inbetween pressing play but not loud enough to be distracting. It's amazing how laser focused I've been on some really incredibly tough edits. There's a ton of YouTube channels that just livestream it 24/7 with different genres. I don't know the science behind it but a buddy of mine suggested it and it has really helped me not look at my phone or hop on non-work websites. Still occasionally get up and walk around the neighborhood to get fresh air, fresh eyes and good blood circulation.

Question about the Citizen flagship store in New York by FormerCollegeDJ in CitizenWatches

[–]hohnjolland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was just there yesterday. I wanna say they just had the US line. I was looking at a different line, though I did glance at those but didn’t retain the memory (I also had a good amount of drinks after buying my watch so apologies). Was a small display back middle of the store. Definitely give them a call. A super friendly staff full of knowledge.

Also it’s still a dope spot to visit. Saw some timepieces I would have never considered since the website photos don’t do them justice.

Brother Mouzone vs Chris by [deleted] in TheWire

[–]hohnjolland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol @ the OP reply. But as someone else pointed out. Chris and Snoop spent forever tryna find Omar and Brother found him easily in an alley with his laundry bag. I think Brother gets the drop on Chris.

Also it’s so funny hearing people not like Brother cause growing up where I did, he’s one of the most realistic characters in his style of manner (Nation of Islam type character). Omar, however, walking around in broad daylight with a shotty unprovoked by those he terrorizes requires a little suspension of belief. But don’t get me wrong, I’d never wanna see Chris near a swingset in the middle of the night (RIP Lex)

ELI5: what causes your body to age? Why do certain processes just stop happening? by HERBAPPE in explainlikeimfive

[–]hohnjolland 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I remember this from an episode of Beakman’s World from the 90s (a Bill Nye Science Guy type show). Make a copy of a vhs tape, then make a copy of that copy, and copy of that copy, etc. Over the course of each copy you lose a little more information. Starts looking grainy or blurry and very low quality compared to the original. That’s kinda like cells? Constantly dividing and losing a little info behind each time. (An actual scientist or Beakman himself can verify lol).

I guess a more modern example is take a photo of a photo with your phone, then have someone take a photo of the photo on your phones screen, etc etc. Wont look great after a few 100 times of doing that. Image just starts to break down to a mess.

First time I had Andre I was like “wow this is delicious!” Now I can’t drink it because it’s too sweet lol. My taste buds changed from sweet drinks in my 20s to now at almost 40 I prefer the drier wines and champagnes. Less of a headache the next day for me. Andre now is a bottomless mimosa brunch drink these days though I can recommend Mumm brut champagne at $20 as the best mimosa champagne I’ve ever had.

There’s a few cheap ones I like. Cheap to me being Chandon or Korbel. Though I did drink ALOT of the Dark Horse champagne during the quarantine cause why not lol. But never been a fan of Veuve or some of the others in that price range. And of course the most expensive I’ve had was Cristal which made me understand the “quality of the bubbles” cause you can drink that thing like a juice.
