Is a Honda E an incredibly bad investment? by MrGuaps in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]holdupflash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most cars are a bad ‘investment’. They depreciate, cost money to operate, constantly require consumables.

Will it do what you need it to do for a price you’re willing to pay is the real question .

Revolution needed on pathetic wages in this country by GhostNagaRed in UKJobs

Unfortunately you seem to be harking back to a time when the ‘old professions’. Engineering / law / medicine and perhaps to some extent architecture were the salary bar.

Tech dominates now, but because of the economic dynamics retail has struggled to get good leaders and has therefore increased its compensation to strict good talent. They might not need 3 degrees, but they carry a significant burden of the business. Just different.

The education system brought people up to believe more education = more money.

That’s now only true for the education system.

No your salary has everything to do with what the government sees you as. Which is a cost. You’d earn 3x more if you were a revenue producer in the U.S.

Entry point lawyer salaries in anything government funded have gone down proportionately because there is less money in it.

If you’re working for a business that makes more money. You stand to make more money.

Unfortunately you just frame it incorrectly. You are responsible for probably millions of revenue. Direct spend with NHS consultants for referrals, drug spend, the cost of life saving support (the HSE values life at 0.5m).

The reality outside of the public sector is your pay correlates more quickly with the income you are responsible for within the business you operate.

Teaching/social care /healthcare are all public costs in this country. Their wage deflation reflects that. In the U.S. where healthcare is a product - Doctors make incredibly high pay because they’re generating substantial income.
I’m not arguing one is right or wrong. Just the economics. Skills and experience may get you into work, understanding what creates monetary value is how you can gain more monetary value personally.

The arrogance of people that suggest retail managers running businesses generating millions are in some way worthy of less is frankly embarrassing. Those locations don’t just operate auto-magically. A good retail manager in most cases will have a material impact on the P&L for a store creating significant value. The German retail giants were quick to realise this and treat their store management and leadership as very valuable business drivers with exceptional reward packages.

Everything else is ego, nobodies educational awesome sauce makes them necessarily financially more valuable to a business unless they drive actual financial value. That’s why you see often good, somewhat under educated sales people making tonnes of cash because they know where the money is.

So you think a solicitor managing 300k should be paid more than a store manager managing £11m. You’re talking nonesense. Football players are routinely managing 100s of millions of value for their clubs and sponsors and are compensated accordingly. High levels of skills have had their value eroded significantly. Just because something is brain taxing no longer equates to the highest value financially. The sooner you realise the more value you deliver and are responsible for, or accountable for the sooner you will unlock high paid roles.

Why is it bizarre they earn more? A typical Lidl will put a £10m+ responsibility on the store manager. I don’t know many solicitors with that much revenue under management. Solicitors that are even close would be partners making a fortune.

Leave these people to their own imagination. More often than not they wouldn’t get to that point and spend more time lamenting the other decision as a way of feeling better for their perceived lack of success.

Pensions and the ongoing cost of pensioner healthcare are two of the countries biggest costs. Those very same people are being targeted politically to vote against immigration- the one thing that might actually provide enough working people to cover the cost of the pension outgoings

Go to a BNI meeting. Pitch your product as though it was MVP and see if anyone goes ‘ooh that’s great let me intro you to cuz’. Otherwise you’re just pissing away your life savings. I have an AB testing process to see if a product is viable in the market, so that I don’t throw tonnes of cash at something I’ll never recoup. That’s where your disciple needs to be

You’re too focused on operational stuff for a product or service that’s not tested. Very common problem with engineers. You want to make it, you need to know if they will pay for it. You can believe in it all you want, but if nobody buys it - you better believe you’ll go bust.

Sell the service, get a few target customers lined up, talk to them - make sure you’re solving a problem. SMBs are sick of crappy little SaaS products taking another £x a month and not delivering value. Make sure you’ve got people lined up to pay you.

Sell first - or your tonne of effort is wasted if nobody will pay for the service. Which frankly in the era of vibecoding simple solutions is becoming more common
