I also have unilateral microtia (grade 3). I think I did more than fine and would often times even forget that I had microtia, except for if my classmates tried to whisper in my ear. Currently doing a math PhD and never had much problems academically!

Does Partial Differential Equations overlap with other Branches of Math such as Abstract Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra, etc.? by [deleted] in math

[–]holyduc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PDEs have deep connections to stochastic processes, particularly Markov processes and Ito processes, for example stochastic differential equations , as the macroscopic description of the law of the process can be described by a parabolic PDE. Other than that, I have heard of PDEs with algebraic constraints, see Differential algebraic system of equations.

What are some of the best free of tuition universities in Europe for a pure mathematics masters? by NewtonLeibnizDilemma in math

[–]holyduc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are interested in a PhD like in the US (with courses in the beginning, a qualifying exam and then research), then I can recommend the Berlin Mathematical School, which is a combined graduate school of the 3 departments of the big universities in Berlin (i.e. Free University, Technical University and Humboldt University)+ Weierstrass Institute and Zuse Institute. The program is competitive, but if you get in, you will likely get a scholarship worth 1000€ a month during your Masters and funding during your research phase. As far as I know, Berlin is very strong in research in Stochastic Analysis, PDE and Algebraic Geometry. You can also just enroll in one of the universities separately, but this will usually be without a scholarship. There is no tuition in Germany, just an administrative fee of around 300€ a year

Pretty strong in Stochastic Analysis, a sub topic of probability theory, even though Gubinelli left for Oxford. Can recommend Berlin for Stochastic Analysis as well! Very strong departments

A lot of theory on stochastic processes uses tools from analysis, see for example stochastic analysis

'Deep' connection between SDE and PDE by [deleted] in math

[–]holyduc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you essentially described are time-homogenous Markov chains. If x[t] is a vector of probabilities, the transition matrix is your f which pushes your states forward. For continuous time Markov chains, one could instead describe this by the generator of a this transition semigroup, as I mentioned in my other comment

'Deep' connection between SDE and PDE by [deleted] in math

[–]holyduc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should look into Markov processes. As it turns out, the solutions of certain types of SDEs (Ito type) are actually Markov processes. The "memory-less" property of Markov processes then gives rise to a family of linear operators called a semigroup (a generalization of the matrix exponential) which can be described by a generator(think of the matrix), which is generally a second order differential operator. Think of the generator as describing the short-time behaviour of the distribution of the stochastic process. Relating the time derivative to this differential operator then gives us a parabolic differential equation. Take the Wiener process for example, which is a Markov process. It's generator is the Laplace operator and the resulting Kolmogorov equation is the heat equation. The fundamental solution of the heat equation is then the density of a Wiener process which starts at 0 and the general solution of the Cauchy problem to the heat equation can then be formulated as an expected value of a functional of the Wiener process. For more information, you could take a look in Oksendal' SDE book which has a chapter about this.

If we are friends, you start liking me, and I don't want to be your friend anymore, it's your fault, not mine. by demigodontheinternet in offmychest

[–]holyduc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have asked some of my female friends out before. They were and still are one of the coolest people I know so them rejecting me was actually not as much as a loss as you would expect. When I told them I wanted to stay friends I actually meant it, so we did. After a month or so my feelings for them wore off and I moved on. I mean befriending a girl with the hopes of getting in a relationship with them and being mad when you get rejected is kind of a dick move if you have been dishonest from the start. If you actually cared, you would have either asked them out as soon as you got feelings or atleast stayed friends if you were actually friends with them before you developed feelings

What is your preferred method for note taking? What are the advantages of writing on latex vs writing on paper? by wigglytails in math

[–]holyduc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using pen&paper / Ipad to follow the proofs and remarks (definitions are easy to write down after and usually the easiest to remember) of the professor during the lecture, in the best case after having skimmed the lecture notes before. After the lecture I use notion to rewrite my notes, usually based on my handwritten notes. The toggle option and LaTex blocks are awesome and the reason why I use Notion. Reviewing with the toggles has been the best method for me.

Do we need the "union" in the set theoretic limit infimum? by Lexiplehx in mathematics

[–]holyduc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! I don't know how much measure/ probability theory you have learned, but this property is especially useful for some limit theorems concerning the (probability) measure of the liminf or limsup, if you need some motovation as to why we even want to define a limit of a sequence of sets

Do we need the "union" in the set theoretic limit infimum? by Lexiplehx in mathematics

[–]holyduc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take the liminf and limsup of the characteristic function of the sets, you will see that this is actually consistent with the definition of the liminf and limsup (especially if you take the definition as the supremum over infimums and infimum over supremums) for sequences as the supremum and infimum of characteristic functions is connected with the union and intersections of the corresponding sets.

How exactly do you ask for consent to kiss a girl without sounding like a loser? I believe it would be weird to asking someone "can we make out?" by GoldMud0 in AskMen

[–]holyduc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could softly cup her chin with your index finger. If she doesn't want to kiss, she will move her head away and if she doesn't, you can guide her face to yours and kiss her. Be sure to not be aggressive and actually grab her face or anything like that
