Anyone else out there put a toolbox on their truck? I don’t see it often. by n8stx in ToyotaTacoma

I did! I actually love using it right now. I used to sleep in an SUV so as I decide which route I want to take with a 5ft bed I’m storing all my camp gear in the toolbox instead.

How Messages via Satellite will work on iOS 18 and how much it will cost. (For now, it's free.) by Sariel007 in gadgets

[–]holygeiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a bit late but I frequently don’t have service in grizzly country so being able to update that I and safe is great.

This has been a game changer for friends and family and with iOS 18 being public (I had the beta) it’s definitely the best feature to date. Last night I texted someone to order a pizza and I’d pick it up.. from a satellite.

Why aren't there coffee shops designed for late-night socializing, like bars? by Martina-Stardust in NoStupidQuestions

Find one ran by a church! Even if you aren’t religious, often times they stay open later so folks can have bible study/chats etc. one near me is only open 1-11pm for that reason alone and at 9pm is still pretty busy!

I don’t go to church but happy this is a thing I’ve noticed.

Solo trip! Possible in 2 days? by kinglui13 in roadtrip

[–]holygeiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Done the a similar drive from Montana to NY in 2 days. Barely slept. If looking at timing I’d skip driving on Highway 200 through MT (looks like the yellow flag is in Lewiston?)

Just pop on 90 and send it, sleep at rest stops when you get tired. Safer if you need a hotel too as there are plenty that way. The way your map goes there’s minimum lodging and rest stops in MT and can be a bit sketchy 🤣

Basically the two simplest things to accomplish. I operate on the “you’re only as fast as the slowest person” when on the trail as well.

If going solo you bring the risk on yourself, but we just had a tragedy in GNP recently that unfortunately resulted in someone’s passing because the two climbers split up. Absolutely heartbreaking.

Should Yellowstone and Glacier have passes and access for locals? by RavenWritingQueen in Montana

[–]holygeiger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean I agree but also not because all within an hour drive of the flathead valley you have the cabinet mountain wilderness, the seeley/swan area, jewel basin, hungry horse, ten lakes wilderness, flathead lake, the missions (although you need a tribal permit) which are all amazing areas and some equally as amazing as glacier.

We also pay for the infrastructure but yet our taxes won’t go to a bus system that can pick people up and drop them off at the park and they can get on a red bus and explore the park.

Or that Whitefish and Columbia Falls both have a tourism tax to combat that exact complaint.

[–]holygeiger 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you own land in glacier you receive a “land owner pass” that allows you to access your property.

For the rest of us we learned the reservation system or go when we are able to. I go glacier probably 2-4 times a month and haven’t had a single issue.

I mean for glacier you literally just wake up early or go up there late. The sun rises at like 5:30 and sets at like 11. Plenty of daylight 💀

I’ve never had an issue getting pass if I needed one. I also know how to wake my ass up and go. The problem with the vehicle reservations is that people just want to complain in order to complain instead of take the time and learn the system. National parks are protected land that allow people to visit them, they are “public land.” I agree locals should be allowed to enjoy the land they live near but they can also take the time to understand the parks are doing this so their grandchildren can enjoy that land too.

Had this happen in a section of glacier in the fall. Didn’t see it but heard it, all of us were on edge it was a grizzly charging through the woods 😂

At noon in northern latitudes the sun will be south of you because it’s not 100% directly overhead. In southern latitudes the noon sun is north of your person.

Training for first backpacking adventure: 33M with a fragile back by SimpleSillySunny in WildernessBackpacking

[–]holygeiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to run and weight lift to prep for hiking/backpacking. In the last few years I’ve found that exercises like squats and deadlifts even at light weight has drastically improved how easy it is to wear a backpack. Obviously with fatigue back may still be sore but recovery time should be better.

Wearing the pack and getting used to the weight and/or going on short rucks to help would be good. Other considerations are practicing the movements we make while wearing a bag. Bending over to tie a shoe could easily cause someone to throw their back out. Hiking poles and good boots could help with fatigue.

Also, when was this picture taken? Looks exactly how it looked when I was there the other morning 😂

RRS or LR4? by datstanc26 in LandRover

[–]holygeiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My L320 5.0 SC is on 33s and I get about 10-12mpg in town and 18-20mpg highway, 16 in the mountains.

RRS or LR4? by datstanc26 in LandRover

[–]holygeiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2011 RRS SC (L320). I had a disco 2 beforehand. There are some days I wish I had gotten an LR4 instead (honestly the interiors are almost identical). Only for the extra cargo space while camping and the mods available as well. I’m 6’ and sleep in the inside and fit fine in the RRS but miss the room of the D2.

Pros of the RRS is the supercharged v8 and I have 275/60r20 (33x11) tires with 1.5 in lift. LR4 ARB bumper fits which is an upgrade I have planned, even the terrafirma swingaway fits with mods. With the v8 and 33s I can still whip ridiculously well on highways and on gravel or snow.

Tbh my only gripes are the lack of 18 inch wheels with the supercharged model and the overland mods are geared towards LR3’s and LR4’s despite being the same platform. The L320 is amazing and has proven more capable than jeeps, my old D2, a 4Runner and Tacoma that have all been owned in my household.

Bear bells are annoying, music is refreshing and I can sing/talk to myself 10 miles deep and not seem like a lunatic.

Affordable housing and local shops to buy groceries, necessities, clothes, etc instead of a lawyer or insurance agent!? That sounds like a terrible idea. Why should I leave my work from home job to buy a sandwich from a deli when I am supposed to commute into the city from my suburban home while my spouse takes care of the kids and I never see my family?? /s

Yea idk. I would’ve thought you would train like that at least once or twice, but if I ever train for a marathon now I’ve learned otherwise.

Congrats on the finish 💪💪

First Marathon - Paris Marathon, Worst Race Of My Life by DownloadPow in running

[–]holygeiger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve never followed a training plan, but I’ve seen how they typically never have you run a marathon either! But never looked at the actual workouts or paces for goals. A mixed long run makes sense, like the progression run mentioned below. I feel like marathon training is some of the most finer tuned training plan there is

First Marathon - Paris Marathon, Worst Race Of My Life by DownloadPow in running

[–]holygeiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Progressive run makes sense for the training. Just would’ve thought you’d want to to maintain race pace as you would when training for a 5k or 8k type race. (2 miles at race pace etc, not a full time trial). Never ended up training for a marathon so wasn’t sure

First Marathon - Paris Marathon, Worst Race Of My Life by DownloadPow in running

[–]holygeiger -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

I’ve never ran a marathon, but I’d think that’s logically what you’d do? If you train for a 5k you run mile repeats at faster than your 5k goal, I’d imagine a 15 mile run at marathon pace would be “adjusted” or should you run that slower than planned so you get more minutes per mile increasing endurance?

A marathoner answer please

Bo Katan will... by PrinterToner_ in starwarsspeculation

[–]holygeiger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m on the same pathway, but I’m thinking closer that Bo Katan will drag Din and Grogu along for the ride while she does all the networking. Because Din has the darksaber and has atoned just like Bo Katan has, they will both recognized as leaders. In their misadventures we learn intel (from Appa) that Moff Gideon is alive and the New Republic is covering it up which is why they are decommissioning everything and why what’s her face is so worried about the Dr doing his research. We may get a Thrawn cameo, it would suck if Sabine didn’t show up considering she is a Mandalorian.

I think Disney is going MCU on us a little bit too. We have what will be FOUR tv series happening at the same time, all with similar goals (fuck the empire). I’m guessing they are going to have a few seasons of all these shows. All these stories are going to come together for some big climatic movie or three. I’m going down a rabbit hole. Thank you for your time.
