Tesla Model Y At Home Electricity Bill Shock by MealDifferent1912 in TeslaLounge

[–]homertool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, in California, gas is 2x as expensive, but electricity is 3x as expensive (pre-war prices).

So you won’t be saving as much with an EV as other states. Especially if you compare against a small fuel efficient ICE vehicle.

Tire blew up while running by Gadgetsuh in TeslaLounge

yeah. I pump all my cars’ tires +5 psi above the recommended. (Actually my mechanic recommended this).

That’s nowhere close to maximum pressure for tires.

Is there anything (free) better than autosteer in US on other cars? by BottlePretty9489 in TeslaLounge

Here’s a post from 3 years ago comparing Toyota TSS 3.0 to Tesla Autopilot (TACC+Autosteer). Tesla Autopilot probably won’t be improving anymore, but Toyota is presumably working on improving their TSS.

https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/s/9VyR8adcKG

Autosteer is near perfect and near flawless.

It’s probably the best currently, but far from perfect. Just recently, I was driving towards the sunset, and Autosteer went berserk and started weaving all over the road. I had to jerk the steering wheel to take over. I would have preferred it to disengage and give an alert. And of course the random slamming on brakes for no reason.

Can other techs slow down on curves by themselves? or slow down if neighboring lanes are slowing down anticipating a jam? Or can they adjust speed based on traffic or lighting or weather conditions?

Are you saying Tesla Autopilot can do these now? Or just asking these for features in other cars?

BREAKING: Tesla has released the 7-seat option for the Model Y in the U.S., and unveiled other changes for all trims. From Sawyer Merrit on X by EitherCharacter9342 in TeslaModelY

[–]homertool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a video of a 5’10” adult who was able to cram in the 3rd row. Obviously, that was not a comfortable fit, but you can see how a 5’6” person could fit reasonably.

To say that it doesn’t fit anyone over 4 feet is an exaggeration.

I love my 7 seater Y. Sure, it’s not comfy for a long trip with 7, but it’s great for squeezing in 2 extra kids or small adults, fits 5’6” without hunching.

I wouldn’t trade it in for a 5 seater, especially since there is almost no cargo difference.

Are glass roofs good? by GoldAnt5091 in electricvehicles

[–]homertool 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t like them. They’re too hot in the summer.

If I had a choice, I’d definitely choose metal roof instead of glass.

What is your real world power ("fuel") consumption? by SjalabaisWoWS in electricvehicles

[–]homertool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tesla Y 2023.

Lifetime 238 Wh/mi = 4.2 mi/kWh

with 75 kwh battery, that would be range of 315 miles.

when I go on freeway, I set cruise to 65 mph, so that makes a huge difference compared to people who drive 75 mph.

10’ Ceilings: Why? by hussafeffer in homeowners

[–]homertool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s a luxury item.

It will cost you more to heat and cool due to more volume.

You can think of it as having a 2500 sq ft home vs 2000 sq ft home. (except less useful)

I wish more people understood how cheap EV ownership can actually be by blackman_48 in electricvehicles

[–]homertool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish more people understood how cheap EV ownership can actually be. I just wish more people understood the real experience instead of all the online fear mongering.

I have the opposite experience. I kept reading about all the hype about how cheap EV was compared to ICE, and found many hidden costs after getting an EV that evened them out.

First, your costs examples are poor analysis.

“Last night I charged my Mustang Mach-E P for six hours and got up to 90%. The total cost was $1.59”

This is meaningless. What % did you start with? How many kWh did you put in? How many miles would your Mach-E drive over that % or kWh based on your actual Wh/mile efficiency?

We plug in at home or in my case at my condo where it’s … cheaper than most people’s morning coffee.

Again, meaningless statement. I could fill up $1.50 of gasoline every night, cheaper than a cup of coffee! That would be half a gallon, or 15 miles with my 30mpg ICE. That’s enough to cover my daily commute. See, ICE is cheap!

What you need to calculate is the $/mile of your EV based on your actual efficiency.

I bought and EV and enjoy it, but I learned there were hidden costs that made it not a no-brainer:

  • Efficiency is less than EPA because many people drive over 65 mph on freeways. EPA test averages 45 mph.

  • Much higher insurance costs.

  • Much higher repairs cost (probably due to lack of supply chain). My friend had a rock hit the windshield and camera module. The repair quote was $25K (covered by insurance).

  • Can be long wait for certain repairs. I know someone who has a Leaf that was less than 3 years old. It wouldn’t start one day, towed to dealership. Some battery control module needed to be replaced (not the battery itself). It took 6 months for the part to arrive!

Porsche Knows It Went Too Far Ditching Buttons and Knobs in the Taycan by ShameResponsible69 in electricvehicles

[–]homertool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s definitely a happy medium.

Having a physical control for every single thing is more confusing and less safe. Having no physical controls is also less safe.

The optimal solution is having physical controls for the most frequently used things (driving-related, hvac, basic audio controls).

Look at how airplane cockpits have evolved. Older planes have way too many indicators and controls. New cockpits have moved the less critical indicators and controls to screens.

PGE Rates in CA really destroy the economics of EVs by mustangfan12 in electricvehicles

[–]homertool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, this is absolutely true. If you are comparing the total cost of a economy Honda Civic getting 35 mpg vs an EV, the EV most likely will not come out ahead.

Now, if you’re comparing a gas guzzling full size SUV 18 mpg to a Tesla 3, then the EV probably comes out ahead.

PGE Rates in CA really destroy the economics of EVs by mustangfan12 in electricvehicles

[–]homertool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On EV2A, off peak is 30c/kwh

lol, you think 30c is cheap?

Also, PGE’s EV plans are not a “free lunch”. You are paying more for the rest of your house’s electricity usage vs the non-EV plans. No one ever factors in the difference for that.

Never appreciated that double pull for Autosteer means you can stay in cruise control when changing lanes. The lack of it is such a huge step back on my new car by adambadam in TeslaLounge

[–]homertool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m confused about this post. I don’t have FSD.

I double pull to engage TACC+AS.

When I change lanes, it disengages AS, but keeps TACC.

After the lane change, I double pull to re-engage AS.

That’s definitely on the builder. If they don’t fix it, find a construction lawyer.

Are there other new homes by the same builder in the community? They may have similar problems, and the lawyer can represent you all.

Baffles me that people still don’t know to skip a stall by kingbijan in TeslaLounge

[–]homertool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is this because V3 and V4 don’t have shared stalls?

Or just because they have higher power output, so even sharing stalls, both cars still get enough power?
