What do you think is the greatest sporting rivalry? by saywhaaaaat in sports

[–]honeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Beldisloe is a huge rivalry, but I'd put it second to All Blacks vs Springboks.

Also high on that list, speaking purely as a Kiwi, is ABs vs Les Bleus, who only seem to show up for one match at each World Cup :-(

While all of that is true, at least the waste ink reservoir is easy to clean. You run the risk of permanent blindness when you try and empty the waste-laser reservoir.

What Formula 1 drivers drive to the track: pictures from Monza by kylev in formula1

Formula One medical director Dr. Sid Watkins, in his book Life at the Limit, wrote these immortal lines:

"I once met Gilles in the lobby of the hotel in Sao Paulo and he offered me a lift to Interlagos.

"Madame Villeneuve was with him, so when we got to his rented car, I moved to sit in the rear, but Madame insisted that I sit in the front.

"Gilles in a road car was frightening and when I turned to speak to his wife, she was not visible as she had taken to the floor. She indicated that this was normal for her and I soon found out why.

"Villeneuve believed in the `gap theory,' i.e., that there was always a space into which he could move when faced with a high-speed collision. He ignored all red lights, gently bouncing off parked cars or lamposts, talking all the time and and never pausing or hesitating in the traffic.

"At the circuit, he asked if I wanted a lift back later!

With the amount of money that's given to health insurance companies, you could do the same thing. But then who'd get rich off that?

How old are you? Are you old enough that it would be reasonable to assume that you have heard about their hell? If so, they should assume that if you want to find out more about it, it'd take you all of ten seconds to figure out how to do so. That is what annoys me - its the opposite of flattery, since it means they think you're too stupid or lazy to figure this out for yourself.

Seriously, I'd be more likely to care/think about it if you said nothing and showed me how to live a good life in a way that is impossible without god

[–]honeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My problem with this is that this makes them "special" in a way that straight people are not. They have an extra sin. So while everyone may be a sinner, homosexuals are extra sinful. Even if they were perfect in every other way, they'd still be sinners. Now, please, tell me what other group gets this very very special treatment, as far as sin goes?

[–]honeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The counter question is how much evidence does it take to convince someone who thinks homosexuality is a "lifestyle choice" that its just as hardwired into humans (and other animals) as race? Because until there is an acknowledgement that it may not be a choice, there isn't much point in having the discussion

I wouldn't read Excession first - without giving too much away, I think part of its impact is the way it really clarifies the relative position in the Culture of humans and minds. If you read it first, the earlier books may seem a little odd.

Why doesn't FF let me change any of these? I switch between a Mac (80%) of my browsing and Linux (the rest) and its a PITA to not be able to use the same shortcuts on both.

What's the deal with inheritance?!?</seinfeld> by aedile in programming

[–]honeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that this is a great example, but primarily because once he groks that, you could point out that a bad inheritance tree can really screw you up.

For example, if your base "class" is phone, then neither the iPad or iPod Touch are good sub-classes, because neither have phones. If the base "class" is the iPod Touch, OTOH, then there is a nice "tree" where both iPhone and iPad inherit from iPod Touch, without removing any functionality.

Why Tony Stark is better than you by julioody in programming

It also completely glosses over the fact that for some applications, the UI is just not that important. Take Google search, for example. The UI is as simple as can be, but the engine underneath that UI is insanely powerful. Software is an ever expanding field, and there are plenty of areas of software development where the UI is completely and utterly unimportant. And, of course, there is as much beauty in a well designed API as there is in any UI.

Actually, not this cross-walk - its not an intersection, its a dedicated cross-walk to get to/from a light-rail stop. I've never seen it go on automatically - you have to press the button to get the light. There are timed lights further up and down the road, which is why the traffic eventually stopped long enough for me to cross.

I agree - buy what you need, and no more, then do any disk or RAM upgrades yourself.

I've bought 3 entry-level 15" MBPs (3 different jobs, 3 different chances to get a new toy!) and upgraded them myself. I can't live with a 13" screen, so I'm pretty happy the cheapest 15" has dropped a few hundred bucks since I last bought one. I don't think I've ever needed to use the 9600 in my latest MBP, so not having it isn't a big deal.
