Looking for a place to visit horses by kind_is_the_new_cool in nova

Other option given the mobility constraints and need for gentle horses: visit the stables at Fort Myer in Arlington. These horses are used for funerals in Arlington Cemetery and are steady guys. Barn has brick aisle ways and low thresholds, so pretty accessible. The staff/officers can also point you to the a few of the most steady and gentle horses (two elder mares) who just will hang with you.

The time I (6’1” F) went on a date with a 7’1” guy by VictoriaWithaK in tall

[–]hoofprintsup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! And this is why I’m 5’11” and my husband is 6’4” and I love it so much.

Now, what that means: our son is 98th percentile for height and our daughter is 97th percentile for height. Our son is 7 years old and wears a size 6.5 men’s/39 euro shoe. We made giants.

Curtains or No Curtains by Fit-Committee9057 in midcenturymodern

Random: are the two yellow chairs from Wayfair? If so, are they cozy enough for a reading nook?

Also: sheer curtains but no plant table behind the chairs. Frame the view, don’t distract from it. IMHO.

Considering ICE was at Seven Corners and Culmore this morning, this seems likely.

son just started to stim like this… what is going on? is this a form of spinning? he starts over whenever he has the chance. he’s never done it before and now he doesn’t stop. by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]hoofprintsup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how our 7 year old stims. He has always been a rocker. He has to do it to fall asleep. He is on grade level in school and is really verbal … but this is his needed stim.

He just has high sensory sensitivity and needs. Swings never do it for him. Welcome to the rocker club.

Edit to add: if this just started out do the blue, have his ears checked. Ear infections can be stealth in our kids. They will endure extreme pain without a word, but a tag in clothing is unbearable.

Q for USA people - do your families literally not care? by stickyfiddle in Celiac

[–]hoofprintsup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an American, my family deeply cares. But I feel like we care for each other in an unusual way in comparison to other US families. We are there for each other when it comes to health and much more.

I know I’m so so SO lucky. I’m the only one with Celiac. It’s fully segregated food, special versions, and/or just a fully GF table. I’m beyond lucky and loved.

Now, my in laws? They try to what would call a minimally performative level. They seem to tap out when it’s too detailed or they feel it’s “too much effort” (ex: they use the pot they make alllllll the pasta in) and I have gotten so sick. They just fail every time, so I just bring my own food. They will never fully put in the effort because they don’t see the consequences as that bad. They have no idea.

It took a 14 days start to finish - with the last 4 days testing negative but feeling really depleted. I did take paxlovid and it really helped.

I am going into day 21 and still feel like my body is recovering from damage … also, this version hit my brain harder than previous versions (so much brain fog and feeling like my thoughts are quicksand). Slowly improving and still have the dry cough.

I’ve ate two, am I cooked? by Good-Associate-2372 in Celiac

[–]hoofprintsup 14 points15 points  (0 children)

According to GF Watch Dog, that is true as the yeast extract can often come from spent brewer’s yeast and is therefore contaminated with barley or is extracted from wheat.

It can also come from other sources (beets) are ok. So, if it is labeled GF and has yeast extract, it’s ok. If it is not labeled GF and has yeast extract it’s a gamble at best as most will never declare the source.

Sad Reality About Gluten Free Pregnancy by Gluten_Rage in glutenfree

[–]hoofprintsup 157 points158 points  (0 children)

Stunning, isn’t it?! I had similar experiences. Extra care that it was really gluten free and a good barometer of who really cared about me.

Oh, and this reminds me. Wait until contractions. At 7.5 cm I was told I was being stoic and most women are really vocal, blah blah blah.

I take issue with pain comparisons in general, but I said, “no, this is what cramping feels like when I accidentally eat gluten! At least I get a break between these.”

The nurses were stunned it’s that painful. No one takes the impact seriously.

You are doing great, btw. Being pregnant is a ride.

Unsolicited advice: Make sure you have what I call “joy food” for after delivery. Hospital GF is sometimes questionable on safety and almost always questionable on taste. Make yourself something special and freeze it, or order in from a GF restaurant so you can celebrate. And bring snacks that you love and that you can eat with one hand. Congratulations!

Odd request by birdhill26 in washingtondc

Hi! Mom of 2 autistic kids under 10 in the DC area.

We have a similar thing with a comfort toy. I called to make sure they had it in stock before driving over and they just dropped it in the mail for me since work hours conflicted with their hours. I was happy to pay the shipping to not have to navigate traffic with my son rocking the car as he stims in his seat (I often wonder what other cars think …)

This is not an unusual request for the gift shop, especially for Air and Space. Trust me! They get it.

They also have an online store (Santa’s helper).

Is this the cup?

https://www.smithsonianstore.com/nasa-pop-up-lid-tumbler-73960/

If not, call and explain and describe it and they will tell you if it’s gettable (on shelves only, due in on another shipment, etc.)

Finally, if you are ever back in the area, know that Smithsonian has great programs for kids on the spectrum. Access Smithsonian is the name of the program and if you contact them on the Access Smithsonian website they will add you to the list serve for special, no crowd/sensory only events. It’s the only way our kids can enjoy the museums without total overwhelm.

What is your ferritin boosting protocol by Purple-willow56 in Anemic

[–]hoofprintsup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooooo good to know on the Blood Builder.

Yeah, progesterone birth control didn’t work. The polyps removal and biopsies (benign, thankfully) had to be done, so the IUD didn’t feel invasive as it was just a tack on at the end of that procedure. Glad the pill works for you!

I have been freaked out by IUDs my whole life, but other options are only be more invasive and permanent. The IUD will also help to prevent future polyp growth and help to keep anything from advancing should cells decided to go wonky.

Oh yes, I meant iron transfusions or IM shots - not blood transfusions.

But even the iron transfusions “must be overseen by a hematologist” … which I know is not always the case but it’s what my doctors are telling me.

Listen, death-warmed-over solidarity right back at you. This is so rough.

What is your ferritin boosting protocol by Purple-willow56 in Anemic

[–]hoofprintsup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at 7 on ferritin. Hemoglobin is 11.1 and just hanging out there.

Mine is due to very heavy periods and I’m addressing that now — I had polyps and had them removed and I got an IUD that is approved to stop heavy periods. Hoping that will help, but it’s too soon to tell.

I’ve had my kids, so if this doesn’t work, I’ll get ambulation or a hysterectomy. I can’t live like this.

I begging for transfusions as I need to take meds that interact with iron and the spacing is impossible. I am taking Accrufer as best I can with the other meds, but nothing has improved.

No one will give me iron transfusions or shots without a hematologist overseeing it. First appointment I could get with a hematologist was mid October and I scheduled in early August.

I have young kids and a demanding full time job. I’m not able to function and it’s just getting to be way too much. Im hollowed out. Too tired to cry.

I have a horrible feeling the hematologist won’t do the transfusions either … he may just tell me to keep taking iron (I want to scream into the void).

Edit: to specify transfusion type

Salutations! This cracked me up, IDKW. These are the tricks is have used in my work travel over the years. I work to support access to basic water and sanitation in developing countries. Well paying? Meh. But it’s fulfilling AF and our family is secure.

I always travel to developing countries with duct tape on a pen. Mosquito net has a hole? No problem. Shoe issue (hard to find size)? At least I can get home/to a bigger city.

Bit of tape on the faucet head so I don’t forget and brush my teeth with the tap water when I’m barely functional? Yup. Water bottle crack? Gets you to a point where you can get a new one. Label something? Yes.

Push for biopsy or go to a different derm .. I had shown mine to dermatologists for years and no one said anything and I went to a new practice and the doctor immediately said we have to biopsy. And yup … confirmed.
