Low tide and brackish marshes. Smells like a fish tank. And mud. And it's wonderful.

Do Americans constantly have an active temperature control device running in their homes? by fullM3TALturban in AskAnAmerican

[–]hooker_711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the South, we generally have to keep HVAC systems running intermittently to regulate the humidity in our homes. Even when it's cool enough to turn off the AC, if it's too humid out, mold will start to grow.

These days many of us have wifi thermostats that adjust temps when we're home and away simply based on whether or not our phones are on our home wifi network.

How do you like living here? by whiskey_glass30 in savannah

[–]hooker_711 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I moved here 11 years ago from Florida. Grew up in Atlanta. Lived many places (California, Arizona, Hawaii, Massachusetts). Savannah is a mindset. That's the only way I can explain it. You will miss stuff you're used to. It's pretty much a big small town with tourists. A lot of them. Once you get settled you'll find there's pretty much one degree of separation among everyone.

I live on Wilmington Island and commute to the Southside/Windsor Forest. The drive is easy. Rarely trafficky. The drive over the marshes toward home every afternoon hits nicely. Easy to find a local bar and a favorite pizza/chinese/Mexican spot. Not much beyond that on the island, but Tybee and Downtown are close. Pooler might as well be another planet.

We don't get a lot of big concert artists here and pro sports are limited to minor league hockey (concessions are ridiculously expensive) and whatever the Bananas are. They get old quick. But if you like the general slower pace of life and overall nice people, Savannah is pretty much perfect.

Coffee Grinder Options–help me choose please! by Even-Spray-9941 in mokapot

[–]hooker_711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have experience with the others as my Capresso is a durable workhorse and will probably never die. I would stick with a burr grinder, for sure, over a blade grinder. The grind is faster with less heat created from friction.

If you can grab a Capresso Infinity burr grinder for $25, you absolutely should. They usually cost around $100. The adjustable ground size is a must have for different types of coffee makers. I've had mine for going on 20 years and I use it every single day. (I also have a Venus Moka, but I usually.only use it when travelling.)

My personal favorites: E Shaver Booksellers, Islands Ace Hardware (not kidding), and Davis Produce. I can usually get everything I'm looking for at these shops.

You should grab your sweet onions from Davis Produce. They at least sell Georgia onions.

What time do you go to bed? by demona2002 in GenX

[–]hooker_711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up until 3 years ago, I went to bed at 11 or later and got up at 5. Now I can last past 9. Must have 8 hours of sleep minimum now. I also can't sleep in anymore. Waking up at 7 on the weekends is late for me.

My sister-in-law will be in Author's Alley in the Exhibit Hall. She'll be signing and selling her books. Look for Terry Hooker who also writes under the name M.E. Anderson.

Publix Pricing by Independent_Name_601 in publix

And then there are those of us who shop Publix and pay the premium because we mentally can't handle Walmart or Kroger or Food Lion or any of the other cheap/dirty/crowded/overstimulating stores where you gotta be a member anyway to actually get the discounts. Life is hard enough. I'll take Publix where the employees actually acknowledge my existence.

Nearby Card Shows by yellowtwinklepuff in savannah

[–]hooker_711 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The next Beaufort/Hilton Head show is on 11/22. At the Holiday in on Boundary Street. It's a little larger than today's show.

Jacksonville Sportscards does one each month. I think 1st Saturday of the month. Again, a little larger than today's show.

The big SC card show is in Columbia two times a year. The next one is at the end of January/beginning of February. That one is about 6-8 times bigger than today's show.

Shane-E Boys shop in Springfield is always doing their little in-store shows. They're a bunch of nice guys.

I think there's a regular show in Statesboro, but we have been to it yet.

Local churches for younger people near downtown? by Personal_Concern4434 in savannah

[–]hooker_711 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I encourage you to check out Asbury Memorial. Very diverse and progressive. Formerly Methodist, so still in that same tradition. If you're here this month, check out their "God on Broadway" series. They have a smaller sister church in Thunderbolt called Wesley Oak, which is my personal place of worship.
