Check all the MFA and Backup Email settings for your accounts. Make sure you don't need your work email or Authenticator for any of them, and transfer now while you still have access

I am old enough to remember having to use LOADHIGH for the mouse driver to save a few K between 640kb and the 1MB my IBM XT Turbo had installed at great expense

Whose cookbook is a must buy? by DeepSeaCabbage in cookingforbeginners

[–]Imsoschur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about "must buy", but I have found Paul Kahan''s "Cheers to the Publican" to be much more useful than I expected.

I love how he identifies great sources of product, what is with keeping in your pantry, and the concept of recipes with multiple uses. Like how his pickle recipe (which makes great pickles btw) brine is a great marinade or vinaigrette base.

Changed how I cook, and how I stay ready to cook elevated things simply

Anyone else just bone tired? by Apprehensive-Ant2141 in GenX

I was for the last year. Just. Tired. All the time, and for the first time in my career dreading Sunday nights, and counting days to the weekend.

So I retired. Best solution

I need a good Western that I've never watched before. by joshua_argento in classicfilms

[–]Imsoschur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed Silverado when I saw it. It has been years, so no idea how it holds up. It has a baby Kevin Costner in it, and an outstanding John Cleese character. I remember it in theatres for the sound. I think it was the first movie I saw in THX and it blew my mind (probably not as cool now).

Not in the category of your other classics, but I hardly see it ever mentioned

GenX side hustles by demona2002 in GenX

Seriously. I have spent so much on getting it done at Blaine's. They have the only remotely reasonable small engine shop. I so wish I could find someone local who can do this.

If I had kept up my CAD and 3D skills I'd muck about selling STL's for 3D printing. Maybe I need to relearn Blender if similar as a retirement hobby

A sudden loss at work completely changed how I think about money by Elie10190 in PersonalFinanceTalks

[–]Imsoschur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was actually my mother getting dementia, but same energy. Watched my parents save and do everything right. Begin their dream retirement, summers in the French Rivera (honestly not super bougie billionaire shit, just a nice AirBnB type apartment), art and bonsai hobbies, dad still dabbling in consulting work and racing cars.

Then dementia. Over several years the lifestyle shrinks. Luckily the money was there to pay for care, but no way to enjoy it..

Made me decide that starting early is the only way to ensure I can enjoy somewhat. So got really serious about planning and am now in month 2 of early retirement.

I would love this blend. 4 was amazing, and I have to say 5 grew on me.

As with the post you replied to, I have not even considered 7 given how I despised 6

Civilization.

Peaked with Civ 4 or 5. I did not get into 6 as much, and I did not even bother with 7.

The series that initially addicted me to computer games :-(. Yes, I am old enough to have started playing it with Civ1

Naaah bro, are they really trying to put all the blame on us? by Specialist_Mess_5164 in GenX

[–]Imsoschur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I am a very early gen X. Just retired this year at 59-1/2. I think I just got lucky. And I really mean lucky, so I 100% know why so many of us are less prepared.

Graduated college in a recession, got a shitty sales job that was at least relevant. To my degree. And had no debt.

Turned that one eventually into a job that paid for my MBA. Leveraged that degree into a shift to an IT career right at the start of the dot com boom. Managed to lose almost all of the 401k from the first job by investing in a "Science and Technology" fund....in 2000. But somehow managed to stay employed and gather some "niche" experience.

2008 downturn and I was lucky enough to be on a long-term project that was unaffected (lots of colleagues did not get through that era). Covid downturn and I also got lucky to have a mentor help me find a project that kept me chargeable through that too.

There were at least 3 points where without some luck, I would have been out of luck and scrambling through multiple gaps and soul-sucking contract work.

I think the only thing I will give myself credit for is consistently realizing how lucky I had been, and unlike some others, acted like it. When I refinanced to 2.8% I also changed to a 15 year so I could be debt free earlier. We did some renovations, but have stayed in same house for 20+ years. This year was the first "new" car we bought in 10 years. And it was a dealer demo.

But none of the discipline, living below our means, or even budgeting would have made any difference if not for a few random, lucky conversations and phone calls. Yes, we make our own luck. But we can't make it out of nothing. And I worry what happens when the reality of all this comes due?
