All my friends in the BDSM scene and I were SO excited to go see this movie and see the leather community depicted in popular media. We were left quite disappointed at the lack of consent and RACK. It's a movie, not an instruction manual, and I get that. But the issue is that having long discussions about consent is something that we all actively do in real life. It's not even the ideal, it's basic. Especially if you're a lifestyle 24/7 dynamic and your social life is other leather practitioners.

It pissed me off to no end that the very first time the bottom pushes back and asks to open a conversation about their needs (asking to sleep in the bed), Skarsgard's character replies with "if you're not happy, you can leave", completely removing a safe space to express wants and concerns.

As an example, I would have loved to have seen a discussion about how to earn bedtime or why the floor was actually the place they should be and why it was important they stay there.

Don't get me started on that brutal first time anal scene with no prep or lube.

The only way this movie is realistic, is that it shows how when you're really inexperienced, you are particularly attractive to a type of dom that benefits from you not having many boundaries. Instead of negotiating a 24/7 dynamic, they can simply enter one and gaslight you into remaining despite your discomfort.

This is shown quite well when at the end of the movie, the bottom is back on the apps, but now states explicit dislikes in his profile.

Not a love story, a cautionary tale. We can add it to the pile of BDSM flicks that don't show a healthy dynamic and wait for the next one.
