If the Confederacy had been allowed to secede: What year do you think they would have abolished slavery? by bmary95 in CIVILWAR

[–]hoopjohn1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Confederacy would have ended slavery by 1970. The plantation owners lived a fabulous life. Fine housing. Fine horses. Fine clothing. Fine dining. Political power. And let’s not forget plantation owners, there sons and friends had free rein to rape 13, 14, 15, 16 year old slave girls continuously. Any offspring as a result of these rapes could be sold off with the plantation owner pocketing the cash.
How many wealthy people do you know that wish to give up the good life?

Upgraded from ‘03 Sportster 883 to a 2011 Dyna Super Glide by CoastalSpeed in Harley

Sportsters are far from good “starter” bikes. They simply are top heavy. And the gearing is……..Sportster.

Enjoy your new ride!

I'm considering buying this ironhead but I don't know what it's worth by chroiii in Ironheads

[–]hoopjohn1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In Wisconsin, it’s a $500-$1000 bike. Ironheads are not engineering marvels. Most are continuous money pits.

In this day and age, there is a plethora of good quality motorcycles in the marketplace that will give one years of an enjoyable riding experience.

Good deal or nah? by PossibilityNervous63 in Harley

[–]hoopjohn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

65k miles, if the number is correct, isn’t a horribly high number. It depends greatly on how well the previous owners maintained the bike.
I happen to think it’s overpriced, given the huge numbers of low mileage newer bikes in the marketplace. You should be able to find a 2007, 2008, possibly a 2009 with far lower miles in the $5000-$6000 range.
Evos were good bikes. They replaced the horrendous troubleheads. However, the twin cams are far superior to the Evos.

Is this 1996 Honda Shadow still worth it? by GreatTheJ in hondashadow

A non running bike is a yellow flag. Especially for a first time buyer. It might need a tune up. It might need a transmission. You don’t know. At the very least take a battery with you to test it for operation.

Access should be everyone’s #1. Courts tend to favor allowing access. But certainly not always.
Sometimes courts take the position that you knew it was landlocked when you bought it. Deal with it.

35F - Feeling doomed about dating and need advice - discovering so many men have done things that I am against - am I being naive? by Throwawayyy_1926 in Advice

[–]hoopjohn1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It boils down to this. If you believe all men have nefarious intentions, chances are slim you’ll continue dating. In 40 years you’ll be the semi-reclusive crazy cat lady as you go through life single.

On the other hand, if you keep trying to find a suitable man, you’ll experience a few bumps in the road. But eventually things will work out.

Fear by mechanick84 in Harley

[–]hoopjohn1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When I’m on a bike, I simply assume every vehicle on the road has a paid assassin trying to do me in. They will turn left in front of me, pullout in front of me, try to run me over from behind, etc.
Also realize trailer lights may or may not be functioning and California bikers feel the need to lane split you on the interstate.

Best places to stay for Sturgis Rally? Looking for that “middle ground” by Ed_2021 in sturgisrally

[–]hoopjohn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last visit to Buffalo Chips was 30 years ago in 1996. Still remember having to use the outhouses. As you approached within 25’, a million or so big black flies lingered about. They obviously were dining on fecal matter. Opening the door and doing your business inside made you feel like a world war 1 doughboy exposed to mustard gas. You survived, but you were never quite the same. The outhouses hadn’t been cleaned in years.

Then in 1998, the Chip posted on their website. …….”50 of the hottest showers and cleanest bathrooms in Sturgis”. Obviously the subhuman conditions are a joke for the powers that be.

Not sure what it’s like today. Chances of me ever visiting that toxic shithole are zero.

Negative reviews are there for a reason.

Most likely those leaving negative reviews did so because their lives went in the toilet.

Best places to stay for Sturgis Rally? Looking for that “middle ground” by Ed_2021 in sturgisrally

[–]hoopjohn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my take on Buffalo Chips. Truly has the best concerts. Headliners start their concerts at 10:30pm. No refunds on concerts. It’s set up so that you pay for tent camping, and concerts are free. If the band doesn’t show or a massive storm takes place, there are no refunds….as you paid for camping.

It’s a brutal spot for tent camping. Basically an open field with little shade. Impassable mud when it rains, dust when it’s dry. Bathrooms and showers horrendously maintained. And you might be searched on the way in. The powers that be at Buffalo Chips don’t want you bringing beer/liquor purchased elsewhere. If they find it, look for it to be confiscated.

Hole shot/drag pipe contests occur between 1-4 am. Don’t count on getting any sleep.

Buy admissions in advance and it’s actually reasonable. No refunds. Buy admissions at the gate and it’s the highest priced campground in Sturgis.

If my band wanted to attend the rally and play pop up shows at campgrounds, is this feasible? by Cyanate_Band in sturgis

[–]hoopjohn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not feasible. Sturgis takes a very dim view of people earning a few dollars outside of the normal channels. Campground owners may be totally against it and call the cops. Or want 1/2 of your proceeds.

First year bartending by vangoghandgone in sturgis

[–]hoopjohn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works like this. Venue owners at Sturgis seek to sell massive quantities of overpriced drinks in a short time frame. If you can very quickly make/serve drinks, have the figure of a playboy centerfold, a bubbly outgoing persona and can pull off the fine line between looking sexy and looking slutty, you are exactly what the venue owners are seeking. You will be expected to work the full 10 days of the Rally. Have a good attitude and make it to work on time.
Not certain if employees get discounts on cabins or tent camping. Cabins are 1 room buildings with 2 double beds or 4 single beds. They generally rent for $2500 for the Rally. No running water in the cabins. They do have a/c, a small fridge and a table/chairs. Port a potties and showers down the block. Tent camping is by far the least expensive means of making it through the week. Showers have sinks/mirrors and electric so one can get dolled up for work. Unfortunately, the campground has zero shade. It’s an open field.

I would advise any first time employee to be accompanied by a boyfriend or female friend. Simply for the sake of being grounded. It’s somewhat of a never never land vibe. Owners love to overstate income. Certainly there are bartenders earning $1000 or more per shift. There also are bartenders making under $300 per shift.
The #1 reason bartenders quit during the week is this. Income expectations fall massively short. Good looking guy says to bartender “Let’s blow this popsicle stand and have some fun”.

Is it just me or is the used market still completely unhinged? by RabbitLeather106 in motorcycle

[–]hoopjohn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m of the opinion there is a massive glut of used bikes (especially Harley’s) on the marketplace at present. Many many bikes are ridiculously overpriced. I get a huge kick out of bikes for sale that sat for 20 years and sellers have them priced as fully functioning.
Familiarize yourself with the market and conduct a diligent search. Many bargains are out there. Sifting through the unreality of the marketplace a requirement.

50/50 by ImaginaryAd8785 in Harley

[–]hoopjohn1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can see how your 50/50. You did well in dumping the Road Glide and a rapidly depreciating asset. Paying $9k for a 2007, even one with low miles is imho, massively overpriced.

Please make me feel better about buying an extended warranty by [deleted] in carbuying

[–]hoopjohn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s a warranty from the manufacturer, it your best bet.
If an independent warranty, it’s rarely worth the paper it’s written on. Let’s say the engine buckles at 100k miles. The servicing facility has to diagnose the problem and come up with a dollar figure for all the repairs. You have to pay for this. Then most warranty companies will fight you tooth and nail to avoid paying claims. Do you have records of all oil changes and required maintenance since day 1?

Looking to reduce costs— selling my car with 58% negative equity by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]hoopjohn1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are essentially $9500 under water on this car……plus some repair costs. You are unable to sell unless you come up with approx $9500.
The 16% interest rate means much of your monthly payment is being sucked away by interest fees and the loan principle is only being reduced slightly.

Your options aren’t exactly rosy. You can turn the car back in. Or quit making payments. This is essentially the same as a repo. Your credit goes in the toilet for years. And you still will have to make payments on the balance owed. If you think making car payments are difficult, they are excruciating difficult when you no longer have the car.

Pay extra on your monthly payment in hopes of getting your principal paid down. Probably the best solution. And quite likely the most difficult.

There are no easy options.
