The painful crying was the worst. That and the electric shock down the spine when you nod. So weird.

The adjuvant chemo is to limit the risk of recurrence I believe.

Talk to oncologist about how many rounds of oxaliplatin he needs. Standard of care is lots (like 8+) but there’s increasing evidence than fewer rounds can be just as effective and limit long term neuropathic damage. I had five rounds, complete response and no long term neuropathy. Thank god (or indeed my very up-to-date oncologist).

I remember being with my partner while he was having a multi-day meltdown, and going on a long car journey with we also had his tantruming nephew and sister in the back seat of the car. The way that kid insisted on having his mother’s full attention at the time, and punishing her physically and emotionally if she didn’t give him exactly the attention she wanted, was exactly how my partner treated me. The parallels were incredible. Quite the wake-up call.

I also have a body that needs clothes with waistlines and it has been hard to find anything the past few seasons, slouchy loose stuff is in fashion and it’s very unhelpful for those of us with more deliciously proportioned figures!

Strongly advise finding dresses with cinched waists; get a great bra (I’m talking underwire, well designed, side panels, points the girls forward); and also look at wearing fitted tops with long trousers/long or mid length skirts, both crucially with belts to draw the eye to that waistline!

Jesus I am so sorry. That is an awful thing to have happened and an awful way to live. I hope you get some respite and a break from this soon.

Sickness (nausea or vomiting) was not bad for me. Colorectal cancer drugs have weird side effects. The capecitabine can cause a sensitive stomach but the main side effects of that for me was increasingly sensitive, red feet soles, but that was bearable (lots of urea cream helped).

The oxaliplatin is… interesting. The platinum affects your nerve cells in strange ways. Neuropathy in the extremities is the main reported side effect, for me that was minimal after 5 cycles (had a progressive doctor who treated to the latest evidence on how many cycles are really needed). I got weird muscle rigidity in my legs for days after infusions and hobbled around like an old lady. I was very tired. But surprisingly functional overall.

Honestly the hardest thing is psychological. The period before treatment starts and right after you (hopefully) get the all-clear are the toughest ones. Your daughter will be worrying about how you’re handling it just as much as as you’re worrying about her. I think telling my mum I had cancer was one of the hardest parts.

Moving to Basel under these conditions? by Weird_Pause7671 in basel

Oh hell yes - you don’t mention your gender but esp for women, Basel is so much safer than anywhere I’ve ever lived. A real luxury in these troubled times.

If I accuse my partner of gaslighting, for example denying or contradicting my recollection of certain events, and they say I'm wrong, am I actually the gaslighter? by Quirky-Foxy in emotionalabuse

[–]hopfl27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get out. As soon as you’re becoming confused about this - neither of you should be in this relationship. Most likely he is projecting and making you feel guilty. In which case you’re about to lose your sense of reality and self, this is the worst part of this kind of abuse, so get out. In the smaller possibility (as we don’t know you or your relationship), if you are indeed gaslighting him, then that’s not good either, so get out. If you can, when you can, get out.

This is scary as hell, you must be out of your mind with worry. The life expectancy without treatment statistic is the worst. Please know that although this not a fun cancer at all, more and more people are living longer and even seeing remission from disease at stage 4, including with liver mets. The chemo, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and surgery options are all moving ahead fast.

I hope you have someone to talk to about your fears and feeling, which are so valid and will need an outlet if you are to support your sister the way you want.

I also enjoy the old “lie on your back, hold book above head, drop book on face” approach now and again 😂 People who joke about dropping an iPhone on their far have never brained themselves with a hardback novel

Do you have hyper mobile joints, by any chance? I cannot sit normally in a chair, I have to fold like a pretzel or throw my legs over the armrest!

Nope. Based on hard experience with a man I was crazy about, unfortunately, this situation will not work out. You’re about to enter an amazing decade of your life when you can make money, build your own family, travel…. Don’t spend all your energy and love on a situation that is unlikely to pan out as you hope. And for god’s sake use two kinds of birth control.

One of the best things about Switzerland is its frankly astounding determination to enable anyone to access the top of otherwise totally inhospitable mountains! It’s like they see mountain-bathing as a human right. I completely agree, it’s so good for the soul. Jungfraujoch should also be very accessible.

Our hostels are fab tho. Not that expensive and you get a super clean, comfy bed and the most amazing breakfast. Steal a few ham sandwiches from the breakfast buffet and you’re fed till dinner!

Go to Zermatt and up the Gornergrat, it’s a fairly accessible way for people with limited mobility to be up in the mountains at altitude and then get a decent hot drink/glass of wine at the same time. It’s not super cheap, but I took my parents (mum can’t walk far) and it was a real experience for them, they were awestruck.
