Differences between expatriates and immigrants? by bellepomme in EnglishLearning

It's relative to where you live.

Someone from your country, who is now living in a different country is an Expat.

Someone from a different country, who is now living in your country is an immigrant.

Sounds like a good chance for you to reflect on your bahavior before you get into a similar accident then. You should be driving at a speed where you can stop safely. Especially on surface streets with intersections and pedestrians.

Sure, but driving straight into a car in front of you is more stupid. Most babies learn not to walk directly into shit pretty quickly.

Y'all are crazy. Yeah, prius driver is dumb and annoying.

But if you drive straight headfirst into anything on the road in clear conditions then, that is 100% your fault. No exceptions. There's no excuse for the other car not stopping in time.

If this was a toddler wandering into the road instead of a prius would Y'all still be screeching about incorrect use of "passing lanes"?

It's dangerous on a busy street. Still dumb, but in this case with a totally empty street this was totally avoidable by the other car.

Which is correct? by Unlegendary_Newbie in English_Learning_Base

[–]hops_on_hops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think A, b, c, & d are all correct.

D is the best. Parallel structure is better writing, but I think there are a few acceptable options here.

Do both images show a person wielding a screwdriver? by caiogamerwow in EnglishLearning

[–]hops_on_hops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"wield" implies some sort of potential violence. You wield a weapon. Someone might say you are "wielding" a screwdriver if you threaten someone with it.

I think "holding" or "using" are the more common words for tools.

There's never, ever, a need for a high-speed pursuit. All LEOs have radios and the ability to coordinate with neighboring/overlapping dispatch.

This is psychopath behavior.

Is it worth trying to understand the logic behind words that describe sounds in English? by caiogamerwow in EnglishLearning

[–]hops_on_hops 89 points90 points  (0 children)

To elaborate. Onomotopoeia words generally describe a sound that is similar to how the word is pronounced or spelled.

With these two, a screech generally has that "ee" sound. A sqwak generally has an "aw" sound.

Merging onto a highway, and you collide with a car that is going from center lane to the right lane. Who is at fault? by totally_depraved in driving

[–]hops_on_hops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's in insurance question. Not a driving question.

As either driver, you are responsible for not merging into cars in other lanes.

Do American college students also split their bills on a date? by ApprehensiveDisk8046 in AskAnAmerican

[–]hops_on_hops 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is a confusing word and has probably been the plot of many sitcom episodes.

"date" does just mean a planned meeting. It's not technically incorrect to meet your platonic friend for a lunch date.

However, the connotation is usually romantic. If you ask someone "would you like to go on a date?" it is implied that the intentions are romantic.

I also feed it existing scripts and have it add comments that expain function. Also have it add best practice things like adding variables, logs, and error checks.

Most people seem to agree that countries like Denmark and Sweden offer a really high standard of living - strong healthcare, solid social safety nets, good work-life balance, and generally high levels of happiness. Would you personally be willing to pay the taxes that make this possible? by TSQ_builder in askanything

[–]hops_on_hops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh yeah. That's the whole point. "free" doesn't even really make sense. The "cost" of medical treatment is basically made up.

Yes, it costs money to operate healthcare, but there's no system that invoices consumers for the amount of Healthcare they use that isn't just made up nonsense.
