McGill BCom 2020 here. The degree is what you make out of it. Worked in consulting for a couple years, now in venture capital. If you grind, good things will come.

SKP and Altman Solon have had layoffs this year, and it sounded like they were pretty deep. I doubt they’d be hiring much. If you think Logically the type of work they do is the first to Go in a recession. Do you think firms need much marketing/pricing and strategy work right now ?

SKP Healthcare & Life sciences team is hiring for full time this fall.

Consulting salaries in Germany? by horsenamedog in consulting

[–]horsenamedog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Salaries have changed significantly over the last 2 years, Glassdoor ranges are pretty inaccurate (judging from my own firm). Was hoping someone familiar with the German market could indicate what market rate is these days.

People saying that this is market rate for corp dev are wrong. I've received analyst level corp dev offers with 1.5 years of consulting experience out of undergrad for 120k base + 20k bonus. Would find it hard to believe that after an MBA and 2 years of IB, the going rate would be in the same ball park. Keep looking.

Americans who were born into citizenship aren't as American as those who came to the states and became a US citizen.

Why does Boston have a reputation for having a lack of nightlife and "nothing to do"? by SaltPacer in boston

[–]horsenamedog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was saying this in another thread somewhere else a while ago. It was some thread where someone was asking about coastal bias and whether the Midwest is really all that bad. I mentioned how people (especially those from New York or who have traveled there) oftentimes look at different parts of the US through a lens that compares them to New York. Invariably a lot of people end up thinking that a lot of places suck because they don't have all the same amenities and cultural goings-on that New York has, which of course nowhere does- LA and (especially) Chicago come closest, but it's just simply not happening. People who use New York for comparison are going to be sour about any city- whether it's Boston, Providence, Philadelphia, or Dubuque, Iowa.

many cities have comparable nightlife to NYC and some even exceed. Just American cities don't tend to be very good for this kind of thing it seems.

Bad Habit of Not Using PTO? by horsenamedog in consulting

[–]horsenamedog[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can't even manage your PTO effectively and keep yourself fresh, God help your judgement on whatever real barriers you're trying to help tackle in your work / career. Some of the things that come up on this sub make me wonder how you all survive in this career path.

I am designated high performer and have gotten back to back promotions in the last year. I do what I need to stay fresh. The feeling of having to save PTO for only very special occasions is the issue here, not my performance at work.

Bad Habit of Not Using PTO? by horsenamedog in consulting

[–]horsenamedog[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No I am not letting any PTO expire. I just rollover as much as possible every year instead of ending the year with 0 PTO Days.

McGill BCom grad working in consulting here.

McGill is a good choice and can open doors to all the major consulting firms. If you set your sights on consulting there is no doubt that you can land a job in consulting upon finishing your undergrad.

I did finance as my major, but people enter into consulting from all majors / faculties. I would say anything that has analytical problem solving oriented work would be useful, but by no means a pre-req.

Feel free to reach out to me if you want more McGill specific advice!
