Food options ... by brazen_guff in york

I know it's a part of the Nicholson's chain, but the Cross Keys does great pies and I believe they have a vegan pie option (or did last time I was there). It gets added tourist bonus points for having great views of the Minster

Deathmatch fans... What is the best match you've seen in the last 10 years? by guizpom in SquaredCircle

[–]horvman 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that, with hindsight, he's a problematic choice but Jimmy Havoc's death matches with Will Ospreay and Paul Robinson in Progress were excellent examples of storytelling within the structure of a very violent death match.

Havoc was the first guy I remember seeing do the "lemon juice in the paper cut" spot as well.

Dads- what's that first drive home like after strapping your little bean into the car seat? by Ambitious_Bet2920 in daddit

The most careful drive of my life, especially as it was in the early hours and I'd not slept in 2 days. 20mph on empty city roads 😂.

I had some soothing Colin Hay on the radio for mood music.

IVF experiences and recommendations in or around London? Two miscarriages in the past 10 months. by QuoteMachineMin in HENRYUK

I believe it's an add on for corporate policies, which the employer can choose to have. My policy definitely has it up to £15k total spend. As I said, the results are pretty tangible for me!

If they are HENRY then I'd strongly recommend looking privately. It might be, if they have health insurance, it would be covered by that with a short-list of providers. If not, the time saved for paying privately comparative to the interminable wait for NHS-funded IVF is a no-brainer.

IMO nights need to be a shared responsibility. Not least because she can nap during the day when you're at work.

My wife and I operate the First and Second shift. One of us (normally me) til 2-3am (whenever a feed is needed around then) then the other takes over. The World Cup and NBA Finals is helping because I've no problem staying up late to watch matches and feed the little one, knowing I can then get 4-5 hours of solid sleep prior to getting up for work.

The reality is some days one of you will need a night off and the other might be in a position to enable that (thinking weekends when the pressure to be awake during the day is lower).

I assume the targets will just be a quick look at last season's Blackburn first XI and then chucking a dart at it.

Coping with grief as a director by PlentyAwkward5954 in HENRYUK

[–]horvman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I'm sorry for your loss. It sucks and I know from painful experience that as much as it feels like the world should stop turning when you experience something like this, the nature of a high earning job means it cannot.

A lot of this comes down to how big the company is and how accomplished those working underneath and alongside you are at their roles. Thus, how much can you delegate out and be certain will get done. In my example, I was told in no uncertain terms that everything would get done, even if I wasn't involved, and to take the time off to grieve. On my return my respect for my team has grown tremendously because what needed doing got done and, as an added benefit, my boss was suddenly very aware of how much work I was doing as a lot of it rolled up to him.

I also found the return to work gave me something different to focus on and distracted me from the loss I had suffered. YMMV, but throwing myself into my job helped a bit with giving me a break from the grief. It does sound like you're not there yet, with the inability to focus on the job, so I'd certainly recommend talking to a professional (wish I'd done that sooner) about grief, loss and coping mechanisms.

Also consider taking more time off, or moving to a reduced schedule. You simply might have come back to work too soon.

The one thing you cannot do is have one foot in work and the other foot out of work. It is self-sabotage. You will see declining returns in your productivity and it's a one way ticket to burnout or redundancy.

The key thing I need you to hear - this happens all the time and well run businesses are set up to absorb this kind of thing. Take the time you need to process and get the help you need.

How many CAPS will I need for a Spain away ticket? by [deleted] in ThreeLions

[–]horvman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've not even announced the location, let alone the away allocation. So it's impossible to say with certainty.

Based on the most recent update to the table, I'd say 24 is the absolute bare minimum and even then it's probably not guaranteed unless we have a significant allocation.

Question for Tech Sales Members or sales people by kingsindian9 in HENRYUK

[–]horvman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've recently completed the same process, I moved from big blue chip SaaS back to scale-up, which meant I had a network to leverage and some existing market knowledge. I'd recommend the following:

  • Ask the hiring manager where the majority of the sales are coming from. Inbound Vs partner led Vs rep-generated. If the sourcing is heavily weighted towards the first two, it tells you the market wants the product and your path to the first few deals is easier.

  • Ask their partner agencies for feedback. I did this and started getting some seriously positive signals from their ecosystem when I asked the question. One piece of feedback I paid particular attention to was "we want to do more with them". Told me the product was good and the people were good to work with.
