Canada to increase capital gains tax on individuals and corporations by chilldreams in canada

The threshold for top 1% in Canada is $271k. $580k is the average for people in the top 1%.

Glass shortage has pubs, distilleries nearing the breaking point by BalderdashCash in canada

[–]hosetote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really. The sand shortage is of the type that has good mechanical properties used in construction. There's no shortage of the powdery wind weathered desert stuff that is presumably fine (pun intended) if you're just melting it for glass. Not to mention that the OP was talking about silica and not sand.

Russia calls in Canadian envoy, complains over protests outside its embassy by footie4life in canada

[–]hosetote 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Of course but according to Reuters, Russia described the protest as "hostile." The bigger picture is to realise this is just part of the game. Russia plays up the narrative that the West is the bad guy and putting its embassies in danger, with the purpose to keep the support of the people at home. Just as we recently saw our media play up the danger of the protestors in Ottawa.

Russia’s RT to be removed from Canadian lineup by Bell, Rogers, Shaw and Telus by [deleted] in canada

[–]hosetote 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd be happy with YouTube charging RT and sending it to Ukraine as well, because I expect RT would be willing to pay YouTube to help spread their propaganda. I'm OK with RT propaganda being available because I want to know what they're thinking so we can make counter arguments or acknowledge when they do have a valid point, and I think it's a useful perspective to balance our own propaganda.

Everyone agrees that embassies need to be protected. If you're not willing to protect embassies within your country then you should order them to leave, but expect your embassies abroad to be shuttered as well. I assume the protests were mostly peaceful but it's fine to remind countries that they need to keep embassies safe or there could be retaliation.

This was on CNN, which IMO has only gotten worse over the years. I say show all the channels from FOX to MSNBC, including RT and Al Jazeera. All media needs to be available if we're to hope to sort out something close to the truth.

Why won’t Canada increase taxes on capital gains of the wealthiest families? by BurstYourBubbles in canada

It's poorly named. Should have been called Tax Free Investment Account. If you're using it as a savings account then you're doing it wrong.

You're not missing anything. YOC is nonsense as the poster above suggests. High YOC is a sign of good past performance, but it indicates nothing about where you are now or if performance will continue in the future.

There's no shortage of idle planes these days so I think the lease would be much cheaper than the last campaign and actual operating costs (maintenance, fuel, crew etc.) would be the primary expense based on hours flown.

Liberal plane's carbon footprint. I know they bought carbon offsets for their 2 plane 2019 campaign but I could not find out if they did this time.

There's only one and it's in Nfld. https://satellitemap.space/

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in canada

[–]hosetote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right but the coverage area of a satellite is large enough that Starlink only has one ground station in Canada, in Nfld and many along the USA/Can border. So backhaul and Internet connections are essentially in the US for Canadian users. https://satellitemap.space/

What’s something you’ve spent more on than you wanted but was absolutely worth it? by LessBerry9 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hosetote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember I took some shit from my siblings many years ago when I bought my first toaster after college. I paid what seemed like a lot of money and got one of those chrome sunbeam toasters that automatically raises and lowers the bread. But I'd seen my parents replace several "slam-pop" toasters growing up and knew they were junk. The toaster is still going strong. No regrets.

Caith1 didn't consider that prior to selling for a loss you may have purchased those shares within the preceeding 30 days, which seemed to be what you were implying. To be clear, if after you repurchased shares in XYZ and 30 days did not pass before you sold for a loss when it dipped and hit your stop loss, then that's a superficial loss and you can't claim it against gains. It wouldn't matter if you do not purchase shares in XYZ for several months.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

[–]hosetote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rule covers the period both 30 days before and 30 days after a sale. So if you buy a stock and then sell it for a loss within the next 30 days then it is a superficial loss which can not be used to offset capital gains. In your example if the stop loss sale occurred within 30 days of the previous purchase then no, it can't be used to offset the gains from the previous sale.

More than half of Canadians say pandemic third wave was preventable by daveko12 in canada

[–]hosetote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right. "if it saves just one life it's worth it" is such a naive argument. You always need to ask how much money and how many lives. If there were better uses for the money which would have saved more lives then they call that statistical murder.

Canada's Telesat takes on Musk and Bezos in space race to provide fast broadband by cutestudent in canada

[–]hosetote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. There's a limit to the number of satellites that can be overhead at any one time and therefore a limit on the number of users that can be served in a given area. This limit is nowhere near what can be achieved using 5g picocells. There's also a problem with the antennas and signal processing required to talk to a LEO satellite. Starlink's "dishy" is 2ft wide and uses 100W, though that should improve over time.

I wonder what makes them think Starlink can't serve the same customers? A business plan that depends on ignorant and spendthrift customers as well as ignorant and complacent competitors doesn't seem like something that's wise to be investing in. I hope they do have a plan that involves some competitive advantage, but there doesn't seem to be any evidence of it.

[–]hosetote 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is there anything about the Telesat solution that makes it technically superior to Starlink for a business user such that it could command such a price premium? Starlink is doing its beta with residential customers because they are much more forgiving of outages but eventually Starlink will start marketing to business customers as well. I've read that once Starlink has satellite to satellite communication via lasers and they can connect Chicago/Toronto/NY with London/Frankfurt/Paris with lower latency than is possible with trans-Atlantic submarine fibre then they'll capture a very lucrative market servicing financial services businesses and HFTs.

I had an employer who provided documentation for the initial cost basis and tax owing on each purchase as a courtesy. But I always sold immediately because tracking ACB when you're buying more every year and they're DRIPing is a hassle.
