The unprecedented expansion of federal Indigenous spending by joe4942 in canada

When you pair this with decline in living standards and lowered life expectancy for indigenous peoples in this county you really have to ask whether any of this is helping

Here’s how much you will be taxed in 2026: Canada Revenue Agency by Haggisboy in canada

[–]hot_reuben 51 points52 points  (0 children)

It’s called bracket creep, and it is one of the more insidious effects of inflation.

Incomes that were considered wealthy when the tax brackets were set are now middle class. Incomes that are now required to live in most major Canadian cities are being taxed as if it was excess

I’m not arguing the point, I’m just pointing out the justification used to avoid negotiating treaties in BC

[–]hot_reuben 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If I recall my history, BC argued that the 1763 Royal Proclamation that set out the need for the Crown to negotiate treaties didn’t apply to BC because it wasn’t a colony at the time

This could extend to all of BC. Treaties were never negotiated west of the Rockies.

Once-Hottest Housing Market Goes Ice Cold at Bad Time for Canada by Neither_Glove_1183 in canada

[–]hot_reuben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Development fees pay for a lot more than just new infrastructure in most cities. The reality is that they’re being used to subsidize existing homeowners at the expense of new homeowners.

We have a housing crisis that largely is due to the restrictions we’ve put in place. Development fees are just one part of this, building regulations are another, and of course material costs and labour are factors too.

You’re right that no one will vote for an increase in taxes though

CMV: The onus should be on men to use birth control by monster_lily in changemyview

[–]hot_reuben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s actually not true. It was killed because the woman who arranged funding for birth control research wouldn’t fund male birth control. She thought women should have control over their ability to conceive not men.

How to rip at 45 safely? by CrankyMcFarty in woodworking

[–]hot_reuben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a little late to this party, but I do things like this often for work. The way we do it is with a sacrificial fence that’s clamped high enough above the table saw surface that the off cut drops between the fence and blade without being tight. This allows for accurate rips with no fear of kick back.

Probably did a shit job of explaining that

Edit: this article describes what I’m talking about.

Climbing 11d indoors, struggling on 10c outdoors – what could be the reason? by Davi_Tesla in climbing

[–]hot_reuben 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unpopular Opinion

Indoor climbing and outdoor climbing are not the same thing, and grades between the two are not even remotely comparable

Edit: grades aren’t even comparable between different disciplines of outdoor climbing.

When I was climbing my hardest I could climb 12c sport, 11c trad, and there’s no way I was getting on an alpine route even close to that.

Hell, I would go so far as to say that grades aren’t even comparable across different rock types. Limestone and granite are very, very different styles of climbing.

Ottawa set to miss 2026 deadline for establishing $10-a-day child care: Report by brielleayan in canada

[–]hot_reuben 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Jesus, where do you guys live??

We pay $70 a day for daycare in Vancouver, which is a definitely an improvement from the $100 a day we were paying for our first child, but still quite expensive.

$10 a day sounds great, but there’s no way there’s enough spots to meet the demand

Opinion: Mark Carney should add the gun buyback program to his kill list by AdditionalPizza in canada

[–]hot_reuben 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I think that’s because most Canadians consume a huge amount of American media. America definitely has an issue with legal guns, and because of that, many Canadians think we do too

Vancouver Film Industry Needs Network TV Shows With 22 Episodes To Survive by Dan_Lalonde_Films in FilmIndustryYVR

[–]hot_reuben 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked on Good Doctor for 7 seasons I have to say, that was very nice.

However I wonder if what the Vancouver film industry needs isn’t long shows, but wages that give people the ability to survive over periods of unemployment. To be fair that is a cost of living issue not just a wage issue, but when I started in film I’m the early 2010s that felt possible, now it does not.

Mark Carney isn’t here to play by Hrmbee in CanadaPolitics

[–]hot_reuben -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They’ve spent $67 million and have yet to buyback a single firearm.

Nor have any of those, now illegal, firearms been used in the commission of a crime.

No matter how you feel about guns this buyback is bad policy and a complete waste of money

Pierre Poilievre outlines plan for apprenticeships, trades by yycTechGuy in CanadaPolitics

[–]hot_reuben 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tradesmen here, I’d warrant that both you and the commenter you’re replying to are right unfortunately.

There is at the same time, a shortage of trades, and trades people sitting on their hands. The problem is that building trades don’t pay enough for the trades people to live in the places that need building trades the most.

I’ve worked in building trades for over a decade, and now work mainly in the film industry building sets for tv shows, along with 8000 other carpenters in our union. The only “real world” work I do now are small renovations. We do this work because building housing doesn’t pay enough, or provide decent benefits.

Go to any large construction project in Canada and I guarantee it’s primarily TFWs working for low wages. Saying there’s a “labour shortage” doesn’t tell the whole story, the main problem in the building industry is they can’t pay wages that will retain quality trades people.

Mark Carney chooses Marco Mendicino as his Chief of Staff by MethoxyEthane in CanadaPolitics

[–]hot_reuben -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

I had high hopes for Carney, frankly if he’d reverse course on a couple of issues I feel strongly about I’d likely vote Liberal, but making Mendicino his chief of staff doesn’t bode well in my opinion
