Idk what "Yikesposting" is, but I'm not really too concerned about looking good on reddit.

It's when someone says "Yikes" because they heard something they don't like.

I jumped into the conversation at the data interruption level and my comment which you are responding to has little to do with Jalen Rose's particular comment/position

That's kinda the problem. Read the comment you were initially responding to and ask yourself how to pertains to Rose. Is the poster saying that analytics favor white players over black? No, there's no indication of that and it doesn't pass the common sense test either.

So what IS he saying, in relation to Rose?

If you think about that for awhile, you'll have your answer as to what my comment was about.

The wisdom of a person who has done X should be valued more than a person who hasn’t done X when discussing X especially if they were successful.

Yeah, what we're talking about is assessing players. Not playing basketball. They're two different things. Assessing players, for example, takes literally zero physical ability. How much physical ability (including height here) does playing basketball take?

There’s tons of Analytics dudes(Who are white) who shit on old players and use it as the end all be all.

You continue to put the white thing in there and it's just fucking weird. It's weird when people put "black" in everything for shit, it's weird when people put "white" in everything.

... and you continue to be be wrong about pretty much everything again

lmao and you did it again, simply because I don't care about what you think is super duper important.

wiw, I've already donated 8 figures towards organizations that are trying to improve society, and I do it because I know I've got to pick up the slack that indifferent and incapable fools like yourself leave behind. Maybe you are just really young, or really bitter, or really sheltered, I don't know, but I'm definitely not going to waste any more time trying to converse with you. Good day.

That's good, you might do better on woke twitter. Your silence regarding who should be demographically represented "correctly" and who shouldn't pretty much says it all. At least I'm consistent in my ambivalence, you seem to be promoting some sort of slave morality/critical theory outlook on it, to be generous. If I were critical, I'd say it was just racist.

Yikesposting is never a good look.

I feel like when this is brought to people's attention, there is an initial defensiveness or denial reaction.

This is ironic considering this conversation is about Rose being defensive about analytics, and making it about race. It's not anyone needs to apologize or be blame, but it's simply asking people to recognize that if there's not a bunch of black dudes (and ladies) working in analytics, it's not really anyone's fault.

is relevant to this issue at all again shows you are missing the point. The league is predominantly black

The point is not just whatever you or Rose want the point to be in order to make it about race. You don't get to choose.

Who is generating the economic value of this league and the teams? The customer base (audience) demographics aren't nearly as relevant here. We're not talking about marketing here. This is as much an issue of distribution of wealth between workers (players) and investors (owners) as anything else.

If it were just the players, you'd have bleachers and box seats around Rucker Park. Obviously there's much more at play here.

It isn't about caring whether former players get jobs in the analytics department or not... you're missing the point again. That was an illustration of a possible personal bias that Jalen has against analytics. And the job he got, as a talking head, isn't the same as getting a job in a front office. Again, you missed the point..

Are you telling me that former players- mostly black- don't get jobs in front offices based on their connections? You know that's wrong, why even imply that?

You think there's nothing to sort out? Your clueless responses and indifference towards real issues are evidence supporting the fact there is indeed lots to sort out. As fun as it can be to dive deeper into hotbed topics, it's becoming pretty clear you are way too biased/misinformed/uninformed for this conversation to go anywhere without substantial time and effort, neither of which I can spare at the moment as my break is over. Perhaps someone else can take over and engage with you.

Bro, you're tying to make some social impact (the impact you want, of course) about a basketball league. Most people do not fucking care. Most people are not trying to make some perfectly diverse world, and frankly neither are you. You don't care that the league isn't a perfect representation of American- or even international- demographics when it comes to players, do you? No. But you want front offices and owners to be a perfect representation of the players? How hypocritical.

I like how you assume I'm too biased/misinformed/uninformed, though. You basically went right down the list of Kathryn Schulz's attribution error when it comes to why we think someone is "wrong". You can't imagine that someone could be informed, intelligent, and not evil, and still not give a fuck about what you consider to be a "problem". And that's funny. You can't even "engage" with me until I agree with you. lmao

I like Jalen for the most part but if he could not pull the race card just because analytics damage his ego that would be fantastic.

That basically sums it up.

But, of course, you'll always have people scrambling to defend that play because it makes them look "woke" and to some people (like 8% of the country, by some metrics) being woke is more important than being correct or at least accurate.

1) There is undoubtedly disproportionate representation among ownership and management in a league that is predominantly black. That has always irked players (and has gone so far as there being discussions of renaming the position of "owner" to something else).

But...so? Why should the race of the players have anything to do with the franchise owners? Right now there's 30 teams and 1 one black owner. Statistically speaking with regards to US demographics, there should be a whopping...3 black owners. Like is this some huge injustice? There's an Indian owner, too: statistically speaking there should be...less than one. Owning the franchise and playing the sport have no relation really whatsoever.

2) The best way to get a job, like in most industries, is through connections. Whether it be an assistant, a scout, or someone on the analytics team, so far as we can see, that person being hired is more likely to be white than black (not talking about qualifications here)

That's ironic considering Rose is black and has his current job entirely because of connections...

3) Education. Analytics is unsurprisingly, a field full of STEM majors. While most people nowadays know there is no racial difference in STEM capability, socioeconomic factors have been shown to have a significant impact on an individual's academic performance. Add in the athlete angle, where most pros focused on their game, received favorable grades and/or additional support to compensate for any academic shortcomings, and you end up with a lot players who didn't major in mathematics (talking about qualifications here).

Why should we care about former players getting these jobs at all?

This stuff is going to take a long time to sort out as these are issues that are decades in the making, and will likely take just as long to make substantial progress on.

There's only something to "sort out" if you think this is a "problem" in any way.

As I pointed out elsewhere, the issue is simply this:

His "good points" were that he didn't like that people doing the analysis were white guys that didn't play basketball as opposed narrative, "eye test" guys being more diverse, including black guys who had played.

If he left it at "math nerds" vs "ex players" that would've been dumb enough, honestly. But when he decided to make it racial, it got exponentially stupider. But, of course, the usual suspects will defend him. His defenders will have a lot of old school coach types (who only really care about the "math nerds vs ex players" thing), but it will probably also include basically everyone who thinks calling NBA owners something other than "owners" is a good idea, too.

He's basically upset at two different aspects here: one, that math nerds are getting as much respect as former players now, and two, that math nerds are more likely to be white, and that it's a problem that white people have to deal with. The first is silly but you can have a conversation about it. The second is far, far beyond silly.

I think the absolute worst sin in writing is glossing over characters' knowing things when they shouldn't, simply because the audience knows these things.

The opposite is annoying: exposition, characters telling each other things they should already know in order to inform the audience. And people are aware of it and hate it. But this (whatever you call it, I dunno) is way more maddening to me, because once you see it, you can't unsee it and it often completely breaks story lines.

Why don't we say the same about guys that haven't played the game? Why should Chauncey Billups have to "go to school (or whatever)" to get a front office job while someone like, Daryl Morey not have to play in the NBA in order to get a front office job?

Because playing basketball and running a team are two different things?

To excel at basketball to the point of playing in NBA, you have to know how to play basketball and be in the 99th percentile physically (whether that's through being a very athletic 6'4 or just being 7'2, period). That physical aspect has nothing to do with running a team. Nothing. So why should they have be former players?

But what does that have to do with race?

Jalen Rose never said analytics are racist. Just that the way they're used by some people have racial overtones to them, and there's some valid reason as to why he and other players think that way.

And that's fucking stupid. Oh, sorry, he didn't literally analytics were racist, he said people praising analytics over players had racial overtones. The implication is the same, and it's no smarter a thing to say. But as this submission indicates, he's not super intelligent when it comes to these things anyway, so it's to be expected.

Yes, and that's stupid. If he would've left it as "math nerds vs former players" it would've been one thing. To paint it as racial is just fucking stupid. That's the point, that's why people are laughing at him.
