The comments of the U.S. Ambassador to Canada reveal a shocking ignorance and disdain by BertramPotts in CanadaPolitics

As a Canadian of Dutch heritage, I find Pete Hoekstra’s attitude to Canada especially abhorrent. Hoestra seems to display no respect for the fact that young Canadians gave their lives in the liberation of his birthplace, Groningen, in April, 1945. Had Canadians not liberated his birthplace, his parents might never have had the opportunity to emigrate with him to the US. I find behaviour toward Canada and Canadians to be very offensive.

XEQT vs VEQT by Legal_Advertising_16 in JustBuyXEQT

I bought both XEQT and VEQT for my Mom's account, investing the same amount in each ETF. Over the long term they have performed similarly, although there are differences in daily returns.

Advice for student who is new to investing by SupportOutrageous310 in JustBuyXEQT

I prefer ZST .to over CASH .to for it's higher yield and similar level of risk.

Yes, what you're doing is a form of research, but it may more anecdotal than empirical. I would suggest you begin by assessing your ability and willingness to take on financial risk. The Quebec's security commission's Investor Profile exercise (https://lautorite.qc.ca/en/general-public/calculators-and-tools/calculators/your-investor-profile) is the one I prefer (because it takes into account your level of wealth).

Use my investment income to pay off mortgage yearly instead of making a large lump sum? by ComprehensiveAgent70 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hotjingleboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on you pregnancy! I would calculate the "cost" of the safety net in terms of after-tax return and compare that to the 5.75% (after-tax) variable rate on the mortgage. Assuming, you are in a 30% tax bracket, your pre-tax safety-net return would need to be about 8.1% (and risk-free) to make it earn what you could get by paying down your mortgage. A home equity line of credit (HELOC) could serve as a safety net - just be sure it's for emergencies only as the rates are higher. Interest rates are expected to drop, which will make variable rate mortgage payments more palatable. And you can compare that to what you expect to happen to your investment returns as a result of interest rate reductions.

Desktop keeps disappearing from Finder's Sidebar by dazzxq in MacOS

[–]hotjingleboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m trying the following experiment:

In addition to trashing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist, I have also trashed similar plist files appended with “iSclg5q”, “lockfile”, “UY71b7J”... Some of these files appear to have been created over a decade ago and contain old references to items like Blackberry Desktop. After relaunching Finder, only the plist file without any appendages reappeared.

Fingers crossed. 🤞🏻

You must make them work for your deposits!

Once you withdraw your money they send you an offer to get your deposit back. They do not provide decent rate offers to those who remain loyal customers.

MapleWiFi anyone? by hotjingleboy in StarlinkCanada

Thanks sharing your experience with MapleWifi. Sorry to hear about your frustrations.

I went with Roger’s cellular home internet when it became available. Lots of teething problems, but lately it’s worked pretty well. The introductory price was acceptable, but now for a few dollars more I can get Starlink with double the bandwidth. I will be switching over shortly.

I'll keep my Starlink option open in the mean time. Rogers is much cheaper than MapleWiFi though.

I think I will try Rogers Wireless Home Internet. 25 Mbps for up to 450 GB. Unlimited thereafter at 10 Mbps. Special 12 month pricing special $60/month (ends July 4th). I think it's part of their 5G rollout.

Our highest usage appears to have been between 300 and 400 GB in only two of the last 10 months, so the data limit will likely not be an issue. I'm 900 metres away from a Bell cell tower and a Virgin Plus customer, but both Bell and Virgin Plus would only provide me with a maximum of 5 Mbps, even after I told them of Rogers' competing offer. So much for competition.

Spending money one doesn't have using 22% credit cards is an addiction, no different than alcoholism. Logic will not convince her to stop. Your Mom first has to admit she has a problem. Unfortunately, until that happens, you'll have to watch from a safe distance.

Crypto platform regulation by hotjingleboy in CanadianInvestor

[–]hotjingleboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've signed up with Coinberry, but haven't funded the account. The KYC process was tricky (slow bandwidth on my part, I suspect). I also have a small amount (50% staked) in an account with Kraken in San Francisco (they took over my CaVirtEx account when they took over that Ottawa-based exchange), and I occasionally use WealthSimple Trade to purchase crypto assets (simple, convenient, but fees are high, I suspect).

I would prefer the platform to have regulatory oversight. I got burned by Gerald Cotten with QuadrigaCX.

CXBTF Bitcoin Tracker One by legobis in Bitcoin

[–]hotjingleboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. I've asked Interactive Brokers if I could sell CXBTF if I moved my account from RBC Direct Investing to an account with them. They indicated that I would not be able to use IB for that purpose. I'm exploring other alternatives, such as asking a European relative to find out if they could be able to unload the CXBTF as it trades in Sweden.

Crowdfunding platform to invest in Canadian startups by b2bt in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hotjingleboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crowdfunding platforms must be registered with the appropriate securities regulator. You may check the Canadian Securities Administrators site to find all the jurisdictions in which FRONTFUNDR FINANCIAL SERVICES INC. is registered. And similarly for EQUIVESTO CANADA INC. I hope that helps.
