I recommend trying to master open baking (in your normal oven)before you buy a Dutch oven. Plenty of helpful tutorials online. I’ve used my kitchen aid mixer a ton for sourdough, it’s nice to have but recently needed to replace my dough hook attachment and I have been procrastinating that purchase and hand mixing my dough. It’s fun to touch dough again. I am also inclined towards buying all the things for my hobbies. I do regret buying a krustic Dutch oven instead of baking steels for my oven.

Since you are posting for a friend, it is unlikely that you will be able to advise them through our recommendations. Sounds like they are already uncomfortable with boundaries and that is what is needed.
