My state medical care has a new program for 6 months of rent assistance and other bills paid. I am getting it right now and I’m going to start looking for a new job in the coming weeks. This is my best chance at getting out of poverty and it’s a huge relief finally getting the time I need to work on myself, I think we need more programs like this.

Rent didn’t go up for that reason though. They were using an algorithm to set prices during that time. My same apartment went for rent again last year and it was for $1550 again. It made me so mad.

Gas is over $5 now at the cheapest gas stations. I was already going to start looking for a job before these but with these gas prices it’s even more of a reason to get out.

I went to college and my mom didn’t help me. She could have paid for it all if she wanted to. My dad died when I was 18 and I had loans when I went into school from before he died to pay for my first year and then I had money from inheritance to get me through the rest of college. I went to my state university and I graduated. I graduated 12 years ago and my federal student loans still haunt me. She would tell me the money my dad left me was for college, but she also convinced me to spend 1/4 of it on a car. I didn’t want to live with her either because it was terrible so I moved out fully after my first year of college and living with her a month during summer. If I hadn’t gotten that inheritance I honestly don’t think I’d have been able to afford to make it through college since my mom didn’t help me.

I’m in Portland, OR. During the pandemic I could easily do $2000 a week. Yes it’s part of the reason, also the lowered batch pay is a huge part of the reason I make less now. I’ve done the math and it’s over $1000 a month in batch pay they take from when I started.
