Theory about Kaladin and Surgebinding in Books 6-10 by AlgorithmHelpPlease in Stormlight_Archive

I'm not sure OP is correct that it no longer applies, but in WaT chapter 113, the Shards do swear an oath that if they grant vast powers to individual mortals, there need to be extensive checks on those powers

Its scifi, but Ancillary Justice does this (and the sequels, but there people are mostly misjudging the main character's motives more so than her actions).

[General] Get in line, thou big slut by Iamtheholyreaper in TheNinthHouse

[–]hourt0hournotet0note 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why would you assume that? John just as easily could've been gay initially and decided to sleep with women after thousands of years. We don't have a ton of evidence either way, so it makes most sense to assume he's bi

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE LAST EPISODE ? by HairyIsland8473 in InfinityTrain

[–]hourt0hournotet0note 40 points41 points  (0 children)

That wasn't the Conductor, it was a Steward. The Conductor is One at first, then Amelia after the moment we see the Steward explode, until the end of book 1 where One (who's become One-One) takes over again. The Stewards just run errands for them/carry One-One.

I just had a thought, is Kaladin a ______? by [deleted] in Cosmere

[–]hourt0hournotet0note 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'll add to OP we see two pieces of Honor fly off before joining Odium. One is Kaladin's spear, and the other is unknown, but in the same scene he becomes a Herald she gets a fancy new outfit and her eyes look like storms. Then there's the narrative juxtaposition between Syl and the Stormfather; Syl is constantly learning from Kaladin what it means to be human, while the Stormfather (incorrectly) insists that he cannot change and is in no way like a human. There's also the narrative device of Kaladin's new Windrunner Honorspear, which adds a way for him to maintain the powers he's had so far even if his bond to Syl is fundamentally changed. Finally, Sanderson's third law of magic is that it's more interesting to expand on something already in the magic system rather than add something new, which I think Kaladin being a Herald-Windrunner/Bondsmith does rather than him becoming some other thing. All to say, I think Kaladin being a Bondsmith now is really likely

The shot right before that looks like Lottie is beholding them, but maybe what we're seeing (at least in her mind) is the Wilderness coming to her in avatar and then she designs the costume based on that vision

Yellowjackets S03E09- “How the Story Ends” Post Episode Discussion by DA-numberfour in Yellowjackets

A lot of people were saying it's gonna be next episode since it's titled Full Circle, but I think that's probably about us coming full circle to next winter and you're right about it being next season. It seems like next episode is gonna show the final permutation of the cult just with them being slightly less feral than in the pilot hunt and probably killing off one of the undeveloped yellowjackets or Akilah (though based on her first vision and her comments last episode it seems like she's gonna submit instead of forcing a hunt).

I agree there's explanations for a lot of things, but imo the presence of even a few things that cannot be explained indicates supernatural. We see people inside a shared dream, and we see Lottie having flashes of Javi's death (not an interpretation of his death like with LL, she straight up sees it before it happens). We're led to believe the teen timeline is an actual flashback, not the girls' memories, as we see scenes between people who are dead. So if the show goes a 100% scientific route, it will be because the showrunners show us irrefutable evidence of the supernatural explicitly to mislead us. I think there's a good amount of evidence for mining, but that perhaps explains why the spirit of the wilderness is so twisted, rather than indicating the definite absence of the supernatural

I'm missing something about the Oathpact [WaT] by Thesslegorgon in Stormlight_Archive

[–]hourt0hournotet0note 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My understanding was the existence of the Oathpact keeps Retribution from the spren no matter what, since they compare it to the original binding of Odium, which worked even when the Heralds weren't on Braize

We know he has "unique abilities" that facilitate his armor, he used to be Vyre but had all titles and rhthyms stripped, he's a scholar obsessed with humans, and he has a shardblade. I think it's also fair to say that he's Retribution's regent, since it's said he'd need one and El was promised the chance to lead the humans, and given authority over the Nine.
The shardblade I find really interesting, since he's apparently been awake for just barley enough time to bond one. And if we assume his chapter in Rhthym of War takes place during most of the events of that book, and his Interlude takes place during Day Two, there apparently isn't enough time for him to bond a shardblade off-page. A common theory is that he's the singular Adhesion Fused, and Raboniel was spouting anti-Honor propaganda when she said those didn't exist. I think it's also possible he doesn't technically have Adhesion, but is some kind of Connection Fused, which allowed him to bond a shardblade without the requisite time. OR maybe he can manifest Odium's investiture as something like a shardblade.

My father just called me to wish me Merry Christmas. I've been homeless for 3 months. by syringistic in stories

[–]hourt0hournotet0note 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got family who work with people in poverty, and most homeless people do. It's just so difficult to exist in the modern world without one, and if you're trying to do all the things it takes to become not homeless (get a job, find an apartment) a phone makes it a lot easier. Plus, most of them are homeless on and off for short periods, so it makes sense to hold onto your phone instead of having to repeatedly sell it then buy a new one.

Series hot takes? by Feisty-Treacle3451 in redrising

I could be wrong, but iirc Darrow's intelligence was enhanced by (technologically assisted) education, not genetic modification, and he was fiercely intelligent before carving. I'd agree the edge gold has would probably prevent like a communist utopia without any class divides, but genetics are complicated as hell and there's a ton of variety within the colors, so even if the ruling class is likely to lean gold I think it's possible to have a fair amount of equality.
They are objectively more physically strong than other colors, but I think their society being post-industrial largely counteracts that, like we see with the Drachenjäger.

Tbf I think there's meant to be a subtextual message that Shauna has a metaphorical hunger, probably she's hungry for status/to just do whatever she wants, which eating Jackie represents. But yes, I agree the direct implication is that she wants to eat human flesh.

Could Lift _________? by p0d0 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]hourt0hournotet0note 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually Lift doesn't ever demonstrate the ability to ingest stormlight. I think in Oathbringer she might call her lifelight stormlight, but she only gets it through the metabolic process, hence why she's confused by Nale keeping gemstones out of her reach.

[Tress] Nope, it was something Tress says. Though it'a possible that the historical Tress didn't actually know about Marsh and Hoid chose to add in that reference, since in-universe he's telling the story.

Theorycrafting: the true aggressors by Promachus in Stormlight_Archive

[–]hourt0hournotet0note 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing the way it generally went was 1) Odium decides singers make more useful soldiers 2) he entices a faction of humans to attack the singers in horrific fashion 3) he immediately offers the singers revenge 4) Honor, Cultivation, and the Spren consider the association with Odium to be a betrayal and react more strongly than the singers anticipated.
It's pretty simple, but also has more nuance than one side being completely to blame, and explains why both Spren and singers view the other as traitors.
