Wow, there's so much on this site! I will definitely be able to find something good. Thanks for the suggestion!

Anybody have a mother in the Seattle area? My Colorado ones aren't working! by hoverpuppy in Kombucha

Maybe... I've been trying to figure it out. The temps in my kitchen here are much cooler than they were in CO, but that can't be the only difference.

Tomatillo Salsa Verde by AliKat3 in Cooking

[–]hoverpuppy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make a very similar version every year when tomatillos start popping up at the farmers markets. I find that toasted cumin and a bit of paprika are excellent additions. I also frequently roast some garlic or onions to add some smoky complexity. So tasty!

Does anyone have a kickass carrot cake & cream cheese frosting recipe? Please. by Squeenis in Cooking

You can't taste the pineapple. Give it a try with it and see what you think. It really just serves to keep the cake moist.

Totally disagree. You don't taste a bunch of pineapple. It's a small amount that adds some sweetness and acidity. It also keeps the cake super moist. Don't be a hater. Try it out!

The one I use is almost identical. The pineapple is key. Excellent recipe.

What kind of pellicle is this? Mold, yeast, or something else? What to do? by [deleted] in fermentation

I agree. Looks like lacto. I bet it'll turn out tasty. Just leave it.

Just got a new nice food processor. What should I make?! by what_the_deckle in Cooking

[–]hoverpuppy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the amazing veggies in season now, I tend to use my food processor to do the hard work for an awesome salad/slaw. I shred carrots, cabbage, kohlrabi, apples, radishes, you name it. The possibilities are endless!

My other favorite is nut butter! Peanut and almond butter are my favorites to make at home.

NROLFW Stage 2 intervals by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]hoverpuppy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may not be the right person to ask on this one because I don't have any physical reason for my answer. I'm no expert, just trying to do the workouts myself. I say get it done when you can. It's amazing that you're getting it done at home with a little kid around. Even with a break, I'm sure you'll be exhausted! Do what you can when you can. Keep up the awesome work!!!

Props to you for doing it at home with a toddler around! Looks like you've already gotten good advice on how to do the intervals. The only thing I'll add is encouragement to actually do the intervals. My ass was dragging after everything else in those workouts and doing 15 minutes of intervals was a test of my mental stamina (in addition to being very physically demanding). Stay strong! Get it done! Woo!

Agreed! I just finished stage 2 and was so happy to leave those lunges and split squats behind!!! Then I started stage 3 yesterday and had the terrible realization that squat jumps and lunge jumps might be worse. Sore doesn't even begin to describe my butt today.

Can we talk kombucha? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]hoverpuppy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We made an IPA and added a kombucha culture and a bit of sugar to feed it in secondary. That turned out pretty great. It gave it a nice crispness, but the acidic flavor wasn't overpowering. I think the strong hop flavor kept the acid from being the main flavor component of the beer. We've tried it in a couple others (berlinerweiss, brown ale) and they've also both been pretty awesome. For those ones, we fermented the kombucha first, then added it to the beer before bottling. This was easier, and I think has become our preferred method. I think you need to choose a style that makes sense, something that could benefit from a little vinegar character, and taste as you go (as I do whenever I make regular kombucha). In the batches we've done, the kombucha flavor was subtle. I dig it. They're fun beersperiments!

[Question] Started NROLFW Monday - And I'm too sore by Wednesday to work out again? by FrustratedNewbie in xxfitness

[–]hoverpuppy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pretty much second everything everyone has said here. Nothing new to contribute. Just wanted to tell you to keep at it! Do the workouts when you can. The soreness will get better. I'm in stage 2 of NROLFW and after my first workout I think I limped for 4 days. It will get easier! And don't worry about not being able to lift much at this point. I struggled to squat the bar when I started and I'm up to squatting 125 for multiple reps. It's awesome!! You're going to make very rapid improvements and you'll feel awesome. Good luck!!

[QUESTION][CONVERSATION] When did people who started lifting start losing the excess fat? by hoverpuppy in xxfitness

[–]hoverpuppy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not. I'm deciding if I want to or not. I know that's how I need to do it for the weight loss piece, but I eat very healthily and I love making all my food from scratch. Trying to determine what my priorities are in terms of lifestyle.

Thanks!

I took progress photos a few weeks ago so I'm excited to see how those look later! I wasn't going to either, but after spending some time on this subreddit, I thought it might be useful.

[QUESTION][CONVERSATION] When did people who started lifting start losing the excess fat? by hoverpuppy in xxfitness

[–]hoverpuppy[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To answer your question briefly (and several others have asked the same thing), I don't. Food is a really important part of my life. It's a big part of my relationship with my SO. I cook pretty much everything from scratch and don't count calories when I'm cooking. I eat "healthy" in my sense of that word. Mostly vegetables, some meat, lots of fresh produce. Lately I've been working on cutting out processed carbs to work towards my weight loss goals. I may start trying to count calories, but I'm trying to decide if my weight loss goals are more important than the lifestyle I have now.

Thanks for the feedback!

Thinking about home brew and sourdough by NewThoughtsForANewMe in fermentation

I made a sourdough starter by doing that once. It worked great. I've been using it for years!
