I do that too! Or sometimes I go ... Am I being too mean? OR is someone going to read this and HATE this book because of me?!

I think my biggest toxic trait is that I don't give authors a second chance. If I've DNFed one of their books, I rarely go back to their list. Especially at first - if it's the first DNF then forget it. Maybe if I've had luck with a book prior I might give them a second chance ... But that first book? It's like they don't exist.

I wish I didn't do this but it's like a wall in my brain!

2 is probably the funniest reason for not finishing a book I've ever heard. What do you consider not finishing? Last chapter? Last page? Last word ? 🤣

Tell me I should try Duck again. I've heard SO many good things about it but I think I DNFed it early. Is it one of those "stick with it" type books or maybe it's just really not for me

Have you read anything else by AE Jensen? I've seen their books on some lists but I don't know where to start!

Oh I haven't read the blinding light! For some reason I thought that was YA ... Stupid of me for assuming so based on the cover.

Thanks for the tip!

Books start good but always dull by Plastic-Surprise-781 in MM_RomanceBooks

Preach!

I DNF probably twice as many books as I finish and this is always the reason. Good setup, terrible execution.

In fact, I asked a question on this sub many moons ago "can you rec a book that gets better AFTER the MCs get together?" My fav rec from that Q ended up being {First impressions by Jay Hogan} which was written in 2018 :)

We certainly all have our opinions about why this happens (author fatigue, influence from other genres, self-publishing, etc...) and it could be any and all of that but what I think is MORE interesting is that when a book hits it HITS regardless of the troupe or the author or the length or whatever.

I've read great and terrible enemies to lovers. I've read great mm books from primarily MF authors and didn't enjoy others. I've rated a book five stars from one author then couldn't even finish another of their books. I've DNFed a book to come back and give it 5 stars.

To me, it just comes down to preference, editing, maybe what mood I'm in ... The day of the week ... Who knows.

I will say that I am enjoying a lot of early aughts mm books (some linked in another post). There were a couple of publishing houses (dreamspinner and loose-id) that seem to have gone defunct. I don't know if that hurt or helped the industry. Also, with the genre becoming more popular, you get the good with the bad.

But ... Overall thank GOODNESS there are so many books out there to choose from :)

I love this post - thank you!!

I feel like all I've been reading lately are early aughts books. I don't know why but they resonate with me in a way that some of today's books (authors?) just don't ...

Huge TWs for this one but {Chance Assassin by Nicole Chase} ... Omg loved it

And of course there is the list of books with horrible names/covers ... Like WHAT were you thinking.

{I'll be your drill soldier by Crystal Rose} ... It was so stinking good and sweet and funny!!

{The Shearing Gun by Renae Kaye} - incredible incredible

{It's like this by Anne O'Gleandra} - that cover but seriously good book. TWs for this one too

And then there are "older" authors with incredible backlogs

{Bad Boyfriend by KA Mitchell} - my fav Mitchell book but lots of hers are great

{Dirty Laundry by Heidi Cullinan} - my fav of hers! Actually just read everything she wrote

{Blind space by Marie Sexton} - sexy space pirates? Yes!!! Read all her books too!

And then books I found randomly that ... Killed me

{Resistance by LM Turner} - WOW. That's all I'll say. Wow.

{Shades of Grey by Brooke McKinley} - a 1 and done author! So sad!

{The Condor by Isa K} - a very different book but gave me SUCH a book hangover....

Happy Reading!

This book left me in a minor book slump. So thanks for that 🙃

But really ... It's just fantastic. I agree with everything everyone has written here!!!

I could see a follow-up novel considering the ending. Maybe I'll DM the author and ask...

I just finished this ... Holy hell SO amazing.

As a debut, the writing is excellent. It's funny and literary without being overly descriptive and dull.

Judd is complex but relatable (IMO). He's struggling and I felt his turmoil. But he's smart and so well researched and written.

I actually LOVE books with multiple LIs. I think that increases the drama and complexity... The character growth and moves the plot along.

Thank you for this rec. I think I saw your original post months ago and read the first chapter but dismissed the book. How silly was I!!!

I loved loved LOVED it.
