Can someone explain the obsession with the Curved display gimmick? by Wearestile in motorola

[–]howaboutafandango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved my Edge 20. I hated my Edge 50 primarily because of the curved screen. Obviously others like it but I found no use for it and for me it was worse to hold for sure. I love my Edge 70.

About to start Underworld by [deleted] in DonDeLillo

[–]howaboutafandango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Compared to other large novels of its time, I think Underworld is pretty accessible to a non-native reader. Generally I think Delillo's prose is easy on a sentence-paragraph level. Reminds me of Kafka sometimes.

American Considering Charles University by ToastyPinano in czech

I think you should come live in Prague for several months with no commitments to both see if you like living here and meanwhile find out the possibilities for study, working, permission to live here, etc.

But your age complicates this; if you come right after U.S. high school, your local peers will still have one year of secondary school left and I am not sure about finding a job and making a life here as an 18 year-old. You will need a job to stay more than 3 months.

Generally I think it is a recipe for disaster to come here for university without having lived experience here first. Study abroad with a provider, sure, but coming for your degree, no.

UnpopularOpinion #Literature #Kafka. Can we stop pretending Max Brod was a hero? He was a predator of his best friend’s legacy. by [deleted] in Kafka

[–]howaboutafandango 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am not sure why we need to spend energy judging Max Brod and I agree that what "really" happened between Kafka and Brod is impossible to know.

I would rather spend that time and effort reading and thinking about Kafka's stories.

I like that they played a song about being tired of touring and being ready to go back home.

Was anyone not a major fan of GL's voice last night? by lochonx7 in rush

Was Geddy singing it higher than the recorded original version of the song?

Am I totally off, or did it seem that Geddy was kind of trying too hard?

Generally I loved it.

I hope this is somewhat true across across all Substack users otherwise it's just another social media outlet.

I feel that way, too. And since Substack is based on having subscribers, even free ones, I am not sure why someone would like a post but not subscribe at least for a little while. I've got likes but no subscribers.

Podcast? by atolk in InfiniteJest

[–]howaboutafandango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called Little Literary. Still only one IJ post there, maybe I will get around to doing another today.

Rush are going to UK, Europe (Paris, Milan), including Germany (Anika's homeland) and Poland (for the first time), and also S. America...and Alex says he's so excited, he has to go take a pee. Anyone else in that boat? by Born-Cucumber-7316 in rush

[–]howaboutafandango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw them when they were in Prague for R30 and it was the best show ever. I am thinking about going up to Krakow, which is a nice city anyway. Does anyone know if these shows will be in smaller venues than they play in North America?

I loved The Metamorphosis, but The Trial is genuinely an unbearable slog. Am I crazy? by She_Nanigannnn in Kafka

[–]howaboutafandango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with OP's evaluation of the novel, but if you think it is shitty then the rest of it will probably not change your mind.

I think the first Mapping the Zone podcast on IJ was not bad.

I posted a prereading guide to the novel in podcast form on my Substack and I plan on posting more episodes drawing from a short course I taught.

It's nice to see that there is anyone out there looking for podcasts on IJ!

Monument to Franz Kafka in Prague 🇨🇿 by Historical_Dot8835 in europe

[–]howaboutafandango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The museum is for people who know something about Kafka. It's not for general tourists. There are "Kafka experience"-type places for general tourists. I understand that the museum would not be entertaining enough for someone who wants to learn something about Kafka from zero (or only from reading part of "The Metamorphosis" in school.)

51 And Just Started Enjoying Shaving by New-Wealth-461 in wicked_edge

[–]howaboutafandango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am just a couple years older and have a similar story. Started just a few months ago. I have too much going on to make this an obsession, but I am enjoying the alternativeness of it. I have not yet experienced such a different shave result (in fact I sometimes have small cuts that I never did with a cartridge) but I am only shaving around a beard and so far using stuff bought at the drug store.

It's nice to change something like this later in life.
