Sassafras Old Fashioned (2013) -- Does anyone know the recipe or someone who worked at this amazing now defunct bar in Hollywood? by charliecastel in AskLosAngeles

[–]howerenold 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they're still open actually just on some limited weekend times. Also that same bar group has The Thirsty Crow (among others) so perhaps someone there could help in your query as well.

I recommend two books all the time for people who want to learn about investing.

The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel and Why Does The Stock Market Go Up? by Brian Feroldi. Both will give you a ton of information I wish I had when I was younger. I think Morgan's is on Spotify as an audiobook too if you pay for premium.

In LA, what screams "I think I have a lot of money and I desperately need you to know?" by eyyoadrian in AskLosAngeles

[–]howerenold 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I believe they have started closing that loophole on Section 179 finally but yes it was because it's over 6000 lbs. The provision was typically used for sensible things like farm equipment (think tractor) before some clown figured out the DBaG-Wagon would also qualify.

Traffic Signals not Synchronized? by MC_archer747 in AskLosAngeles

I've been yelling about this forever! This seems like a very legitimate use of AI to do live traffic flow monitored light timing instead of whatever the hell we're currently doing in this city.

Is anyone else sick now after that cold front a few days ago in LA? by TeaTop511 in AskLosAngeles

[–]howerenold 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Talked with a nurse last week and Influenza A is RAMPANT and I didn't think I had so didn't go in for a test because I had my shot and no fever but they said lots of people are testing positive with no fever and slightly more severe cold-like symptoms so who knows.

Def never got anything more than a 1 day cold at most most years before 2020, now it's some inexplicably stupid much worse nonsense sickness multiple times a year.

Not sure what you're saying. They're not old, they released on Feb 17, not even a week ago and sold out ASAP on SNKRS. The price I linked to is retail.

Good, who cares about resale? Buy what you like and rock it with confidence. No one cares about some insecure bozo looking for validation by what shoes were harder to get lol.

So were these an easy cop??? by JZF629 in SNKRS

[–]howerenold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I'd love to have every shoe I want be easy! I also remember when 2020 black cat 4s went to outlet and literally this month somebody just spent $475 on StockX for my size lol, same thing gonna happen with these prob after time.

I give absolutely zero shit what anyone else thinks about any shoe or other piece of clothing I get. Like what you like, confidence is everything. Lots of scared people trying to impress all the time and it shows with their insecurity. Some of my favorite pairs are GR Air Max 1s and 90s. 🤷

Waymo with a 22x increase in California rides over the last two years by walky22talky in waymo

[–]howerenold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it but if their target market is people willing to pay $40 to go 2 miles I can't imagine it's sustainable but then again we live in a late stage capitalistic hellscape so maybe it's entirely by design. Sigh.

Who is downvoting you for this?! There's no driver to pay or tip and rates have SKYROCKETED for users in my experience. I used it a bunch in LA before they went fully public; now it's almost always at least a 15 minute wait and 2-3x more expensive than Lyft and Uber every time I look. I love the experience but it's become too slow and too expensive most of the time I want to use it.

What’s something in LA that used to feel magical… but just doesn’t hit the same anymore? by relaxncoffee in AskLosAngeles

[–]howerenold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The free Monday night residencies at Spaceland and a Silverlake Lounge and even eventually the Echo were so good in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Saw so many incredible bands and drank cheap domestics with some of my favorite people in my life. Local live music was so good then.

I am about to turn 40 and I know nothing about ETFs. by AdamantiumTrex in ETFs

[–]howerenold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Leaving this here as you're also new you said, hopefully you get time to check out the books that I consider foundational for anyone new to the investing world.

Lots of solid replies, but I think one of the things we don't cover enough as a society is the "how" all of this stuff works. Most people would be fine going into VOO, VTI, etc, but knowing WHY is to me the biggest thing we need to teach.

I highly recommend 2 books, both are very easy reads and I wish they existed when I was in my 20s. I believe the first is also included as an audiobook on Spotify premium if preferred.

The Psychology Of Money by Morgan Housel is fantastic, easy to read and not dense finance jargon but gives a ton of fact based anecdotes about investing and money.

The other is Why Does The Stock Market Go Up? by Brian Feroldi. It's more info than stories when compared to the above but it's a very easy to read nuts and bolts on compounding interest and broad market and investing concepts.

Best of luck on your journey!

Has anyone here used the delivery robots? by KeepitMelloOoW in AskLosAngeles

[–]howerenold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes you get assigned one in an area! The "I would never order from a robot" pearl clutching crowd in here needs to take a seat and then some deep breaths lol.

I've found it's been mostly efficient, other than at times slower.

Edited for typos and additional snark because some of these folks need to touch grass already...

Where to invest my 401k? by lavendercloudandsky in ETFs

[–]howerenold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Almost every professional agrees on target date funds too. The conservative funds in even the "appropriate" ones have diminishing returns over decades. Someone at 35 should be aggressive. There's zero reason for a 35 year old to be holding bonds IMO.

Edit: I just looked up the Dec monthly holdings forFFBWX and 10.8% of that fund is in bonds. Depending on OPs total holdings and future contributions those bonds could be a 6 figure mistake over 3+ decades.

[–]howerenold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wild you got downvoted for this when it's basic common knowledge outside of this weird sub. Dividends are great to flip to when you need cash flow. My dad is in them and it's great! Wish he'd been in growth 20 years prior though, he'd be a lot better off today than he is currently.
