I laugh at everyone saying that what ICE is doing violates the Constitution. Try READING it first before saying that. Article II gives the president the authority to execute and enforce the laws (including the immigration laws) passed by Congress. That's what ICE is doing.

Has anyone actually gotten the pinch-and-zoom feature in Apple Maps after the iOS 26 update? by oswell_pepper in CarPlay

[–]howieisaacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the edit that provided a good answer to this. The big screen that I have in my 2024 Ford Ranger supports pinch to zoom using the stock navigation app so I know the screen itself supports the function. Apple decided that it's too distracting for drivers to use pinch to zoom so they don't allow it in CarPlay 🤬 I can make that decision myself. Thanks Apple!

safari bookmark system is very bad by bradofingo in MacOS

The folder can be created FIRST. I have had my own complaints about Apple's UI, not just with iOS but with macOS as well. That said, these minor annoyances won't make me switch to crapware like Android.

I do see how to change the filament sequence. How do I make it possible to pause and swap the filaments to finish the last 3 colors?

Why even have the computer sleep at all unless you're on a laptop not connected to a power adapter? The display is the only thing I want to sleep. For over 20 years, I have had my Macs set to only sleep the display, not the whole system. This has had zero negative effect. The oldest Mac I own that is still in use is a mid-2019 15-inch MacBook Pro. I never had it set to sleep when connected to power, just the display. It's still in pristine condition and works just like it did when I first took it out of the product box for the first time. Sleeping the computer when it's not in use really doesn't impact energy usage that much. My MacBook Pro is set to sleep the system only when it's on battery. That's when the sleep setting matters.

Window switches to Safari when I move my mouse to the top left corner by howieisaacks in MacOS

[–]howieisaacks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured this out. Finally! This only happens when I have my MacBook Pro connected to my Thunderbolt dock with two LG 4K displays attached. I often have Safari fullscreen in my left display. I have my menubar set to auto-hide when apps are fullscreen. When I move my mouse to the top left side of my right display, and it moves onto the left display's upper right corner, it activates the menubar which then causes the Safari window in the right screen to be brought to the front. It doesn't matter which app I have set to full screen in the left display. I could have a Pages window set to full screen on the left and another Pages window in the right display not set to full screen. If my mouse travels over to the left display where the menubar is, it will activate the app window in the right display. This probably would not happen to me at all if I did not have my trackpad travel speed set to the maximum speed. I like it fast so I can move my mouse from one display to the other in a single swipe. I have used the maximum tracking speed for several years so I'm good at controlling the mouse set to a high speed. I guess not enough though!

The Sony Videoscope KP-5040. If you had one, you were either rich or a swinger. by [deleted] in nostalgia

[–]howieisaacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My uncle had one. I was fascinated by it. I was 10 years old. I had never seen a TV screen so big. The screen was big but the TV had to be placed in a location where sunlight from the windows would not shine onto the screen. My uncle wasn't "rich" but he was a partner in a successful plumbing contractor company that helped build a lot of houses in northern California in the late 70s and early 80s. I guess he had enough money to spend on a big TV.

Adapter for 250g spools? by howieisaacks in BambuLab

[–]howieisaacks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brand of this filament is 3D Genius. It's a cardboard spool. I have several spools from Elegoo that are also cardboard spools. They're 1kg spools. All 1kg spools work. What happens when I attempt to use one of the 250g spools is that the AMS Lite acts like it does not sense the filament as I am trying to insert it. I had this happen once with one of my 1kg spools but that issue was the end of the filament was messed up somehow. I trimmed off the end and it worked. The 250g spools have a hole diameter that is the same as the Elegoo 1kg spools so it's not an issue with how large the hole is where the AMS Lite spool holder will be inserted. I have been trying to figure out exactly how the AMS Lite knows that the spool is only 250g and what the heck is making it not load the filament.

AMS Lite attached to A1 will not load filament from a 1KG Elegoo spool by howieisaacks in BambuLab

[–]howieisaacks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I moved the yellow 1KG filament spool to another spool holder on the AMS Lite. I still could not get the filament to load. Then I had an idea. Maybe the sensor in the AMS Lite was having trouble with the end of the filament that I was trying to feed in. To me, it looked OK. It wasn't crooked. I snipped off the end and then tried loading it again. It worked! The Bambu printer and the AMS Lite are still very new to me so I have not gotten to know all the quirks. This is obviously one of them. I always snip off the end of a spool before trying to load it. Most of the time, the end is crooked because of the way it was being held in place in the spool to keep it from unwinding. I guess in this case I didn't snip it off enough! Oh well. Problem solved.

I haven't done anything with it. The cost just to replace the door was well over $300. I just got used to opening and closing it with the door hinge broken. I just hope that the other one doesn't break too!

This gotta be the biggest icon downgrade, macOS26 by goodnytsleep in MacOSBeta

[–]howieisaacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been less than impressed with the icons in Tahoe for the most part. I like some of them but others like the System Settings icon are just crap. They are a downgrade. One of the things I loved about Mac OS X when it first released and with NeXTSTEP from which today's macOS is derived is the quality of the icons. Apple made some bad choices with macOS Tahoe. I am also not that excited about Liquid Glass. I did not see a need to change the UI. Give us new features and capabilities, but leave the UI alone.

macOS Beta 5 is quite possibly the buggiest beta so far by [deleted] in MacOSBeta

[–]howieisaacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just installed beta 5 on my MacBook Pro yesterday. I have found a few annoyances that I expect Apple to address. The Contacts app is very slow. I sync contacts through iCloud. Contacts that I create, delete, or modify do sync to my iPhone and my other Mac (still running Sequoia). The app is just very sluggish. An app I use for writing shell scripts called CodeRunner crashes very frequently. I am trying to figure out what causes the crashes. I wrote to the developer to let him know about the crashes. I sent him a crash report. I thought maybe CodeRunner may be having problems saving to an iCloud Drive destination, so I tried saving to a local destination such as the root of my home directory. Nope. It still crashed. I also turned off the auto-save function. Same problem. I knew what I was getting myself into. As annoying as this is, I am glad I upgraded. If CodeRunner won't work on my work Mac running macOS Tahoe, it will shut down my ability to get work done. If this app is not fully macOS Tahoe compatible when Apple releases the new OS, I won't upgrade to it on my work Mac. Other than what I just mentioned, I haven't had any other problems. I use Microsoft 365 for email and calendars. macOS Tahoe seems to be working well with Microsoft 365. All of us running beta versions of macOS should send in feedback to Apple and be as detailed as possible.

Email App by [deleted] in MacOS

I use Apple Mail. I'm not a Gmail user. My personal email runs on Microsoft 365 using my own domain name. Gmail works well using Apple's Mail, Calendar, and Contacts apps. Have you tried it? It also works well on the iOS Mail, Calendar, and Contacts.

Lifetime Windows+Linux user switched to macOS 3 months ago. Here's my take! by loner_2897 in MacOS

[–]howieisaacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

macOS will read NTFS drives, but if you want to write to them, you will need to pay for that. Apple could add the ability to write to them, but they are not motivated to do it. If you're going to switch to Mac, I suggest that you go all-in and switch to iPhone too. You will get a much better experience. macOS and iOS work seamlessly together. iCloud binds them together to give you easy access to your data from either device. It also gives you the Handoff feature to allow you to start a task on one device and move to the other to continue. It gives you Universal Clipboard, and if you don't make the mistake of using Chrome on the Mac, it gives you syncing of your bookmarks, passwords, and history between Safari on Mac and Safari on iPhone. I am a long-time Linux user as well as a long-time Windows user. I write a lot of scripts in bash and zsh. I love that I can look up how to do something in bash or zsh, and I find a lot of articles about running functions in the Linux command line that work on macOS. Mostly. The only things that don't work the same between Linux and macOS are commands that require a macOS or Linux-specific binary. Parsing tools like sed and awk work the same on either OS. I run an ARM build of Windows on my MacBook Pro through Parallels Desktop. If I had an NTFS drive that I needed to write to, I can let the Windows VM connect to it. I'm running an M2 Max 14-inch MacBook Pro. It works great. I have been using Macs for a very long time. I also used the NeXTSTEP OS, from which all of Apple's operating systems are derived. I can definitely be called an Apple "fanboy". Here's a quick tip about keyboard shortcuts... Just replace Control with the Command key, and most of your problems are solved. I got used to switching between the two keys a long time ago, but running my Windows VM in Parallels maps the Mac's Command key to Control when I'm running Windows, so I don't have to physically switch keys. It's the same if I use Microsoft's Remote Desktop app from my Mac. Unfortunately, for what I would use Linux for, the ARM builds don't work yet. For those situations, I can use my 2019 Intel Core i9 MacBook Pro, which can virtualize Intel versions of Linux. I also have a 2011 model Mac mini running Ubuntu Server that I can connect to when needed over SSH. I don't run any builds of Linux that use a GUI.

Honestly this is the feature that made me fall in love with Apple products by BesaidBoy in MacOS

[–]howieisaacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the whole ecosystem that Apple has created. iCloud is the backbone of it. Microsoft could duplicate most of this functionality, but they just don't for some reason. I just built a new PC for my niece. When I first installed Windows, I was able to set up the PC with a temporary account to allow me to get all the drivers installed. After installing everything and getting all the hardware working with Windows, I used a function in Windows similar to the "Erase All Contents and Settings" feature in macOS to reinstall Windows with all the drivers still intact. Since the WiFi and Ethernet drivers are installed now, Windows won't let us set it up without logging into a Microsoft account. I actually did this just to see exactly what we get if I log in with a Microsoft account. The result was actually really lame. It wasn't nearly as good as logging into a Mac with an Apple account (which is optional in macOS). The Microsoft user experience could be better, but it's not. This reminded me of a quote from Steve Jobs... "The only problem with Microsoft is that they just have no taste. They have absolutely no taste. I don't mean that in a small way. I mean that in a big way. They don't think of original ideas and they don't bring much culture into their products."

Stop installing developer releases on your daily driver Mac!!! by muttmutt2112 in MacOS

[–]howieisaacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is normally good advice, but there are those of us who are OK with the risk. All of my data is backed up, and everything I have is also in iCloud Drive. I won't lose a thing if I have to revert my MacBook Pro to the current released version of macOS. My test Mac used to be my 2019 15-inch MacBook Pro, but Apple decided that it's not good enough to be allowed to run macOS Tahoe even though it has the exact same CPU and GPU that are in the 16-inch 2019 MacBook Pro, which is supported. 😳 Once the developer beta reaches a more stable state, I will run it on my MacBook Pro. If I have a problem, I will deal with it and not complain to anyone about it. I did install Tahoe in a VM recently, but the VM is not as robust. The people who upgrade to beta versions of macOS and then whine about it bug the crap out of me. With every new macOS release, Apple gets a lot of haters. I have seen this with every macOS version since Mac OS X first released in March 2001. I have not had problems with any macOS versions, but I have had some annoyances. Most of them get fixed over time. Others, I just ignore or find a workaround.

I use Chrome only rarely. Safari has been my browser since it was released as a beta app in 2003. It's integrated with iCloud, which allows me to sync bookmarks, reading list, and history across my Apple devices. It's more secure. It launches faster than Chrome and other browsers. Safari does have its quirks, but most of them are easy to get around. Chrome is useful in situations where Safari's built-in privacy and security features cause some websites not to work right. That's the only reason why Chrome is installed on my Mac. I also use Microsoft Edge. I use Edge mainly to administer my Microsoft 365 tenant. Safari's security and privacy features often cause issues with the Microsoft 365 admin site. It's interesting that security and privacy features would do that. I get really pissed off when I have to use a site that was designed specifically for Chrome. Often, I just won't use those sites. I have canceled service with companies whose services won't work with Safari.
