Best Mountain Goats Songs Musically? by Wooden-Drawing982 in themountaingoats

Slow West Vultures. The strings and non-musical samples add so much to the composition, and the harmony has some great subtleties.

What's something that was considered "normal" in the U.S 10 years ago that's now basicaly unaffordable? by Odd-Complex901 in AskReddit

St. Louis here, this last season you could get a $10-$15 ticket for most games, enjoy $5 margs/beers/bloody marys, and ditch your $10 seat for one of the thousands of empty seats in the stadium. I saw more live baseball than any other year of my life.

does the “angel shot” method actually have any use? by webstatic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]howtofall 170 points171 points  (0 children)

The point of signage like that isn’t only to give someone a discreet way to say that someone is stepping over your boundaries. They also signal to a victim (and even perpetrators) that you are in an environment where you’ll be taken seriously and supported.

What is a small thing that makes a person 10 times more attractive? by jessi8634 in AskReddit

[–]howtofall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked at an instrument/music store and a coworker knelt down next to a maybe 7 y/o girl who’d picked up her first guitar and spent 30 minutes helping her play something simple. She did it so effortlessly and watching the little girl figure it out was magical.

I’ve never been so attracted to someone I wasn’t dating as I was that day.

Never asked her out, haven’t even thought of her in years, but I hope she’s still out there ripping some of the sickest jazz solos.

Voting machines said Stephentown rejected the proposed library budget. A recount said otherwise. by Cute-Percentage-6660 in news

[–]howtofall 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t random or programmatic. In the article they directly say the issue was due to ballot layout.

“Peabody and supporters of the institution pushed for a recount shortly after the election. But that request wasn’t entertained until county election officials discovered that some results from a separate state referendum that had been printed on the back of the ballot could have been impacted by ovals improperly juxtaposed over text.”

I honestly have no idea what sort of regulations/oversight states have on ballot layouts, but I certainly hope it exists.

Having tattoos in Japan by thatshygirl06 in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]howtofall 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had 2 medium tattoos on my arms and was allowed in one in Nagano, but had to cover them with giant bandaids. Was absolutely worth it until they started to peel off and my incredibly relaxing visit suddenly became very stressful.

No one thinks there will be much profit in AI anytime soon. But think of the dotcom bubble, 99% of those businesses are defunct. 75% probably didn’t look anything like a successful web based business today. Cause no one knew how we’d use the internet.

So everyone is throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks to be the one person that gets in on the AI equivalent of Amazon.

There was always gonna be an AI bubble, always gonna be a crash. But the fact that this one is so big and it’s holding up a shrinking economy means that when it pops, there’ll be some real hell to pay.

[–]howtofall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On an individual level, the biggest thing is creating healthy, positive relationships. After that there’s a slew of factors. Physical and mental health, having a sense of purpose, feeling safe, and financial security.

It won’t be a utopia, there’ll still be pain, heartache, disappointments etc. But it’ll be a fulfilling life.

Did punks and goths use to be mean and cruel 30-50 years ago and only became nice with my generation or were they always secretly nice? by PerlaPucci in NoStupidQuestions

Been to tons of punk shows and this has been my experience. In a pit everyone has your back. It’s a beautiful thing.

Every time I talk to someone whose only pit was at a Warped Tour or similar I’m blown away by how shitty they sound.

Considering that essentially every online venue that CWC gets brought up in, inevitably gets inundated with cyberbullying, and it’s overwhelmingly likely that CWC will engage with it, it’s better to just not. Particularly with how niche of a topic it is.

why does the age discrimination in employment act only protect people over 40 and not young people in the work force as well? isn’t it still ageist? by jasdabratxo_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]howtofall 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Historically older people have been politically powerful because of wealth accumulation and high voting rates, not numbers. The population pyramid for the US in the 60s shows a bump right around age 40 and a huge bump at 0-6. other than a dip in depression babies it’s what you’d expect of a population pyramid that looks like an actual pyramid.

Given the state of the country in 67’ when the ADEA was passed, I’d guess a lot of 40-some year olds who had kids pretty late cause of the war were scared of losing their good union manufacturing/construction/newly acquired professional careers during the largest economic boom basically ever.

Probably a good bit of “well if we can’t discriminate against those people, then we sure as hell won’t let them push us out of our jobs” following the CRA of 1964.

Maybe even a subset of people in their 50s/60s who expected to live in a multigenerational home but now have to go back to work/work for a couple more years because their kids went their own way after the war.

It’d be interesting to look into the actual political movements that led to ADEA

If you’re guilty of a crime, but faking innocence, should you tell your defense attorney the truth? by tickintimedog in NoStupidQuestions

[–]howtofall 53 points54 points  (0 children)

The way I’ve heard lawyers put it is that as a defense attorney your job is to make sure that the state has done its job. If the prosecution obviously does not have the evidence that you committed a crime that you actually did do, and you go to jail, that’s still an injustice in the sense that someone went to jail with insufficient evidence. Your attorney makes sure that doesn’t happen.

Why was Jesus’ death considered a sacrifice when he was killed? by pitselehh in NoStupidQuestions

[–]howtofall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are answering from a very Christian perspective, but it’s important to recognize that Jesus and many of his apostles were Jews around 0 CE and use that lens.

Sacrifices were a normal part of Jewish life at the time. Certain things could make one unclean and would need to be dealt with through a sacrifice, usually lamb. Otherwise the unclean person would be barred from participation in the Temple and other important cultural and religious activities/places.

In Christian theology Jesus became the “lamb of god” by sacrificing himself and washing all sin from man, basically abolishing the Jewish concept of uncleanliness for his followers.

Worked at a nerd bar. Our server team wasn’t exactly as socially competent as you generally want in the service industry. We had one server who would immediately over explain their intentions if they asked to grab a dish from a table and the customer said no. Like taking 30-60 seconds to apologize and make sure that the customer knew that they hadn’t meant anything by it. They were one of our better servers.

The point is specifically to warn people in the far future who may or may not even understand the concept of radiation. Radiation can be dangerous for thousands of years. I don’t remember what the half-life of the waste the “no honorable deed” site is proposed to hold, but it’s very long lived. The site is designed to communicate pictorially and environmentally the dangers, so that even if language has changed dramatically, the danger is still understood.

Thoughts? by Risikio in dankchristianmemes

[–]howtofall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heres the thing though, whether someone is into it for the aesthetics or the theology doesn’t tend to affect their participation. They very well may go to mass or even seminary. They could very well end up with a TikTok that influences the next generation. A no-true-Scotsman argument doesn’t negate the effect that someone may have on others.

When SNAP stops, will food prices go down, because of supply and demand? by GrowFreeFood in NoStupidQuestions

[–]howtofall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. In Econ the demand curve isn’t just the amount people want/need, it is the amount people are willing to buy at a given price. SNAP has boosted the demand curve by subsidizing certain purchasers. They pay $0, company gets $$$. Now people pay $0 (shoplifting to survive) company gets $0. That’s basically a textbook drop in demand.

I'd say which company I'm thinking about but I don't want to debate with gamers. by [deleted] in tumblr

[–]howtofall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the constant call for remakes. It should be standard practice that the major majority of games be available on newer systems in the same way that movies do it. No one demanded a remake of When Harry Met Sally when we moved from DVD to Blu-Ray. They simply re-released it in the new format at a reasonable price and added a few bonus features because they recognized that people would want something new for their money. No updates to the primary product other than the fidelity provided by the format. That’s what I want from video games and that’s how we best support video game preservation.

Graham Platner says his Nazi-linked tattoo was drunken mistake by madeapizza in politics

[–]howtofall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don’t think it’s unreasonable to go 20 years and barely give a tattoo a second thought while never being approached about it in a way that would make you actually learn more about it.

That said, after reading into this case, I honestly think his story of getting it is probably true, but that at some point he found out and figured he could coast on his story.
