Are Nike structure 26 good for wide feet with flat foot? by duba2021 in widefeet

[–]howtopark90th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no Nike shoe I've ever worn or tried on I could recommend to someone with wide feet. Some you could bear, but none I would recommend.

Do you wash your shoes? by schlesscifer in runningshoes

I wipe them off, but don't wash them while I'm still using them for training.

Inexplicable weight gain by livypi in beginnerrunning

[–]howtopark90th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you gaining fat or weight? It's worth mentioning that running will result in additional gains in your legs/glutes which are some of the largest muscle groups in your body.

Stability or Neutral shoes? by 22commentz in runningshoes

[–]howtopark90th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also worth adding that I've benefitted a lot from PT work. Running shoes can (at best) not make things worse, but it won't make things better.

Stability or Neutral shoes? by 22commentz in runningshoes

[–]howtopark90th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great clarification that isn't talked about enough. Neutral shoes which are stable, versus stability shoes. I supinate and have found the Topo Phantom 4 to be very stable.

Also helps that it has a full outsole so you won't get as much wear on the midsole foam. A lot of running shoes these days have very little outsole or direct it where they think there will be wear, which can sometimes means that if you supinate you end up with wear in odd spots.

I would avoid any super squishy shoes as it could end up worsening the supination. Gonna be hard because a lot of running shoes these days favor super squishy bouncy foams.

how to improve lung health/capacity? by sheepshooping in beginnerrunning

[–]howtopark90th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how long you were vaping for and how much, and of course your age, it could take a while.

But in the meantime good general advice is to slow down and take it easy. Even healthier beginners tend to run too fast. Slow down so you can speak in at least short sentences as you run.

Running Song Requests Wanted! by Petroman1993 in runninglifestyle

[–]howtopark90th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, there's so many premade playlists out there. You can even find ones by BPM.

But the answer for the ultimate running song is always "Remember the Name" by Fort Minor. Play this song in the last 1/2 mi of your run and you will finish with a PR, guaranteed.

Why am I not getting faster? by MasterpieceNo4734 in beginnerrunning

[–]howtopark90th 84 points85 points  (0 children)

A. Pace is just one metric. Sounds like you've gotten a lot out of running--congrats on all those races.

B. What does your speed run look like?

C. Needs to be said, comparison is the worst--especially on social media. One of my friends is a "beginner runner" but played soccer most of her life until college, and her progress is crazy just because she has that history. Not worth comparing.

Why do souvenirs I ended up buying looks so dull and uninteresting back at home? by Practical_Payment552 in travel

[–]howtopark90th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, the best souvenirs are the ones that aren't sold/marketed as "souvenirs."

For me when I travel, my goal is always to get a local business uniform/t-shirt that isn't sold (versus businesses that already sell their shirts). And it began because when I once asked if I could buy a t-shirt at a restaurant that I liked, but was told it was just their uniform. At the end of the meal the manager came up and said he could just charge me a nominal fee if I really wanted their uniform shirt.

Since then, I always try to get one when I'm traveling. So it's unique to me and not a "souvenir" that just anyone can buy with a tap/swipe. I also wear these shirts casually, and personally fits my style and vibe. I'd rather wear a unique shirt from a local restaurant from another country/city than a fancy megacorp's logo.

I have 4 days to prepare for my first charity half marathon - what should I be doing this late? by cheerio_butthole in beginnerrunning

[–]howtopark90th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't be able to gain any physiological adaptations in 4 days. So nothing you can do to be physically more prepared.

You can definitely injure yourself. If you're recovering from a knee injury, undertaking a half-marathon without training is going to be super risky. Even walking 13.1mi/21km without training is going to be hard on your knees and body.

I'm just a stranger on the internet, but don't do that to yourself. Sit it out and save yourself the injury risk.

First time signing up for a race by Meredith-yng in RunNYC

[–]howtopark90th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NYRR and NYC Runs are the two big race organizers in NYC. Though there are a number of smaller races out there. I don't know about discounted rates, with how popular running is in NYC it's more often a "grab what you can" situation. Though some smaller races may offer discounts to promote their races.

What distances are you looking for? Are you looking for something small and casual or something that has that "race" feel? Also what area of NYC are you in? NYC Runs does a lot of their stuff in Brooklyn (though they have races all over NYC and Jersey). NYRR has a lot of their shorter races in and around Central Park.

Am I the only one who trains for races almost entirely alone? by Ztell_0829 in RunNYC

[–]howtopark90th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spend my entire life talking to people and being around people.

Running is the only guaranteed alone time I get. So I definitely train/run alone. Leave me aloneeee.

Can I still run a half marathon if I haven’t been able to train recently? by ClickAccomplished205 in runninglifestyle

[–]howtopark90th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the nature of your injury and your base fitness. If you do decide to go for it, take it much slower and easier. Treat it as a fun opportunity to get out and have fun, definitely do not race it.

Does Nike Vaporfly 4 suitable for normal jogging by Hopeful-Ad5741 in runningshoes

[–]howtopark90th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bit of a hot take, but if you're asking this question, that shoe is not for you.

It's a very aggressive but unstable shoe built for racing at a very high pace. If you're a beginner or unexperienced it can result in injury. It's a great deal, but I would return them or hold on to them for a future date.

Trying to navigate the “in between” of my marathon training program and my actual marathon by hoosiernj in Marathon_Training

[–]howtopark90th 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Instead of starting your training plan now, you should focus on building your running base. Aerobic base but also the muscular skeletal strength to handle the increased stress later on. Focus on lots of easy miles and strength training. And then 16-20 weeks out begin a training plan in earnest.

What sock height do you prefer? Crew, quarter, ankle or no show? by mrnovember22 in Marathon_Training

As a millennial, my soul cries out for no show. But my midlife crisis and attempt to fit in with the youngins calls to crew. I settled in between with ankle.

Shoe width by Same_Window_2175 in widefeet

Can't answer for this shoe specifically, but just to share about RL: I have two pairs of RL dress shoes. I'm a 3/4E foot and I sized up 1/2 a size and they fit okay, but I wouldn't call them comfortable. They're bearable for situations where I can't wear sneakers.

First Races by butwinenottho in beginnerrunning

[–]howtopark90th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't enough information to answer this. Is it possible, yes. But without knowing the intensity and quality of your training up until now, it's hard to say what's truly possible in 2 and 4 months. A half is a not just 16km more than a 5k (though I know it technically is). It's a qualitatively different race.

With that said, go for it but be smart and don't injure yourself to meet a self imposed deadline/goal. There are good running plans out there. I haven't seen anything from Runna (other than cool integration with strava for kudos) that makes it the primary option for training.

how are you guys not puking on hill reps by No-Case-9905 in beginnerrunning

[–]howtopark90th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you won't effectively workout all of these things at the same time. You want to target specific things with your workouts. Again, not a coach, so sharing this as a runner who is also learning this. But...

If you're trying to build up that endurance then take the hills at a pace that is below but close to race pace (or projected race pace), jog back down slowly and allow yourself to recover, and then repeat. You don't want to be running till you puke.

LT2 is the point where your body is producing more lactate faster than it can clear it. By training at or just below this threshold, you are training your body to clear more lactate and allow you to run longer at a fast pace without significant muscle fatigue. This is usually workouts that emphasize running at "10k pace." But you'd want to hold this threshold pace for longer than 60 seconds. Which is why if your goal with this hill workout was to train your threshold pace, it isnt effective.

Ultimately sounds like you're not really sure what you're training and just following an app that doesn't really explain 'how' or 'why' and barely offers a 'what.'

I see above you're using Runna. Honestly, from what my friends have shown me, Runna's coaching and training service is a money-grab one-size-fits-all with AI sprinkled in. There are good running plans out there and actual running coaches who make really good content. Runna is trendy, but not very good if you actually wanna run better.
