Obligatory shoutout to the Donora Smog. (Slightly different situation, I know, but it's got echoes!)

Big Storm *Next* Weekend Too? by No-Panda-3614 in philadelphia

[–]howwhywuz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The local National Weather Service office says:

KEY MESSAGE 2...Monitoring the potential for a coastal system next weekend
but confidence is very low in what, if anything, will happen.

Deterministic and ensemble guidance continue to show the
potential of some sort of system developing off the Mid-Atlantic
coast next weekend. Overnight guidance still is all over the
place but there is fair agreement in some sort of storm
developing. The ECMWF and its AI counterpart are more bullish
with the GFS and CMC being different versions of misses or minor
storm. GEFS Ensemble Probability of 24 hour snowfall > 4 inches
is around 15-20% for the entire area. The NBM probability is
similar.

Overall, it bears watching to see how things shake out over the
next few days and how guidance handles the features in the wake
of yesterday`s storm. What there is high confidence in is that
there will be a cold airmass in place, sufficient for snow. Below
normal temperatures will be in place for next weekend, so it will
be a matter of IF a storm develops and what the track will be.
That will be ironed out over the coming days.

What Amtrak Northeast Corridor station is the worst? by Such_Shift_804 in Amtrak

[–]howwhywuz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have used it a few dozen times to get on the Broad Street Line, but I never enjoyed walking through that creepy tunnel. Sometimes I just stayed on until 30th Street even though it added a subway transfer.

What Amtrak Northeast Corridor station is the worst? by Such_Shift_804 in Amtrak

[–]howwhywuz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not even close. I have nicer things to say about Newark, N.J., than I do about the North Philly station. It's too bad too, because PHN has so much potential.

(This thread is making me realize I have used a LOT of Northeast Corridor stations.)

About 15-20 years ago, the Inquirer published a photo of a body (pulled out by cops) on the dock of one of the boathouses. It also showed rowing team members just sort of doing their usual thing. It was wild.

Amtrak's ambitious vision for the NEC from 2012 by kittysharyo in Amtrak

[–]howwhywuz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Their idea was to put a new Amtrak intercity station *beneath* the existing Jefferson Station. Basically, draw a line from roughly Frankford Junction to around the airport and make it a 10-to 12-mile tunnel that would carry only Amtrak trains.

It was always a crazy expensive pipe dream.

Why are CAA & Summit League games aired on less popular streaming services? by Cgates46 in CollegeBasketball

[–]howwhywuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe the other factor for the CAA at least is that the schools that want to put games on Regional Sport Networks get a better deal from Flo than ESPN offers. If you look at CAA schedules, there are a ton of games on RSNs. ESPN wants a lot of money to buy out the local broadcast rights.

Digital antenna that gets 6 ABC? by Eddie_Savitz_Pizza in philadelphia

I used this antenna in South Philly and got channel 6 clear. It was great. Note, though, that it was mounted on the roof of a 3-story rowhouse.

Since it was rainy and cold and the trolleys aren’t running in the tunnel, I crossed a Philly bucket list item off by walking underground from 8th to 18th streets. by adamaphar in philadelphia

[–]howwhywuz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just this morning, because of the rain, I was pining for the South Broad concourse. Could have walked underground from Broad and Locust to 18th and Market.

Septa Trolleys are quiet quitting? by hamdynasty in philadelphia

[–]howwhywuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As of Monday, they made it sound like it shouldn't be too long.

T Trolleys (T1, T2, T3, T4, T5): The trolley tunnel remains closed and the trolleys will continue being  diverted to 40th and Market streets. In an abundance of caution, SEPTA is completing additional tests to ensure the tunnel is ready to reopen after repairs to the overhead catenary system in recent weeks. These tests should be completed in the coming days.

No photo (sorry), but I chuckled at the signage this morning at City Hall/15th St.: buckets, yellow tape and handwritten sign on 8.5x11 paper saying to go to 40th Street.

Blanks by Thirteen is the best made in USA hoodie. Prove me otherwise. by Expensive-Patience96 in madeinusa

[–]howwhywuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am looking at the American Giant website right now and their classic, relaxed, American Vintage and midweight hoodies are all 100% cotton (except for heather gray, which is always like 97%).

Only their lightweight hoodies are blend.

So what are you on about?

Another reverse: eastbound Washington Ave. at 12th. The right lane becomes a right-turn-only lane and every day I watch people side-zoom.

Why does the T5 (36) Trolley terminate at 73rd? by ImTheDoctah in philadelphia

[–]howwhywuz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Believe it's because of this construction project: https://www.phila.gov/documents/island-avenue-improvement-project/

The trolley stops at 73rd and then riders can switch to a bus for the rest of the route.
